Chapter 351: The Three Cattleya Brothers
“Friendly forces approaching! Open the gates!”
The gates swung open, and the vanguard entered the fortress.
A thousand soldiers filed in through the walls, carrying with them weapons and provisions brought from the capital, as well as the meat of giant buffalo they had hunted along the way.
“Brother, it has been a while.”
“Carlius.”
A young knight appeared before the vanguard.
Since he addressed Valeya—the leader of the vanguard—as brother, this must be the fortress commander, Carlius Catreya.
(So that’s Yuri’s second brother… doesn’t really fit the image I had. Doesn’t look gorilla-like at all.)
Watching the siblings’ reunion from a short distance away, Rest couldn’t help but entertain such rude thoughts.
Carlius Catreya had a lean build and an intelligent face.
Though tall, he gave off more the impression of a scholar or a bureaucrat than a knight.
Their father Iljas and the eldest brother Valeya were both broad and rugged, even a bit simian-looking, but Carlius features were very different.
“Hey, big bro! I’m here too.”
“Toya. You came as well?”
Another young man joined the brothers’ conversation.
He was powerfully built, with a stern face resembling their father’s, though his manner seemed somewhat frivolous.
This was Toya Catreya, the third son of the Catreya marquis family.
“You’ve come too. I’m grateful for the reinforcements.”
“If only Blood were here, then the brothers would be complete.”
“No need. With three of us Catreyas here, we cannot lose. Let’s show these tribesmen the might of our house.”
The brothers exchanged words cheerfully, but with great confidence.
The Catreyas were a martial house of renown—having three of their next generation present together made for a formidable sight indeed.
(Wait… wasn’t there still another brother?)
“And… what of that man?”
“Ah. That would be him.”
Suddenly, all three of their gazes shifted.
With a speed like a snapping whip, the brothers turned their faces toward Rest.
“Uwah…!”
Rest flinched.
Valeya, Carlius, and Toya—all three pairs of eyes were fixed squarely on him.
“He’s… thinner than I expected.”
“He’s a mage. They say he’s quite skilled.”
“He defeated the monster Sabnock… and other powerful monsters too.”
“Impressive, but isn’t he to marry into the Rosemary marquis family?”
“My angel… Yuri. Does that make her a concubine? He’s already with another woman, yet he dared lay hands on our treasure?”
Their murmured words were hardly complimentary. Rest could feel their piercing glares almost physically pressing down on him.
“I greeted him briefly during the march.”
“Then I should also greet him properly.”
“I can’t rest until I’ve said my piece too.”
“Words… or perhaps fists would speak better?”
“Father approved him, so we can’t object aloud…”
“Then maybe we shouldn’t say anything—just show it with our hands?”
Their conversation grew steadily more ominous.
The tension in the air prickled against Rest’s back, making sweat trickle down his spine.
“Uh… I think I’ll just go have a look around over there…”
Rest tried to slip away quickly—only for his shoulder to be grabbed at once.
“Wait, Count Clover.”
“We’re about to hold a war council. Where are you going?”
“Wha—!?”
Though they had been standing over ten meters away just a moment ago, Valeya and Carlius now each had a firm grip on his shoulders.
“We’ve got much to catch up on. Come inside, little brother-in-law.”
Toya moved in to block the path ahead, cutting off Rest’s retreat.
Together, the three brothers displayed a frighteningly perfect coordination.
Even with acceleration magic, Rest doubted he could escape.
“Come now, this way. I’ll show you around the fortress.”
“…Yes.”
And so Rest, surrounded on all sides, was herded into the fortress by the three Catreya brothers.
“Rest-sama… keep your wits about you.”
“G-Good luck, Rest.”
“…I know nothing. I saw nothing.”
Nearby stood Dibble, Isis, and Lubase—but they all tactfully distanced themselves, unwilling to interfere with these dangerous brothers.
