Chapter 349: The Skirmish with the Oni Tribe

“Chargeeeeeeeeeee!”

“Kill them, kill them allllllll!”

The foreign tribesmen who had crossed the river charged at the vanguard.
The ones rushing forward with primitive weapons such as stone axes and stone spears were those known among the tribes as the Oni People.

With red skin and horns sprouting from their heads, these demi-humans charged like raging bulls.

“Everyone, meet them head on! Don’t let a single one through to the rear!”

The commander, Valeya Catreya, shouted orders to the soldiers.
The front-line troops lowered their spears to intercept the oncoming Oni.

“Hmph!”

“Haah!”

As shown earlier when they had hurled weapons across the river at the fortress, the Oni possessed fearsome physical strength.
But the soldiers of the Kingdom of Iwood would not be outdone.

They reinforced their bodies with magic, managing to withstand the stone weapons swung down by the Oni.

“Guh…!”

“What strength…!”

Even with magic reinforcement, the Oni’s raw power surpassed theirs.
Soldiers wielding iron weapons were being overpowered by the Oni wielding only stone arms.

“Our weapons are superior, our numbers as well… and yet—this is the Oni Tribe!”

“Rest-sama!”

“I know… [Lightning Sphere]!”

Prompted by Dibble, Rest—who had been stationed in the rear under protection—unleashed his spell.
A sphere of lightning arced upward and struck the foreign tribesmen beyond the soldiers.

“Gyaaah!”

“Damn you, human sorcerer!”

The Oni screamed.
Though Rest could not unleash large-scale magic with allies nearby, his well-timed strike during the melee proved highly effective.

“Keep it up!”

“Loose your spells! Scatter the foreigners!”

Taking Rest’s attack as the signal, the other magicians also launched covering fire, carefully avoiding friendly fire.
Flames and lightning flared, explosions blossoming across the enemy ranks.

“Now! Brave soldiers, crush the invaders!”

The soldiers pressed their assault with spears, striking at enemies staggered by the spells.
Though they had been pushed back at first, the tide turned thanks to the magicians’ support.

“Gwohh!”

“The sorcerers! Kill the sorcerers!”

Forced back, the Oni changed their targets to the magicians in the rear.
Breaking through the soldiers’ wall by sheer force, they tried to reach the protected casters.

“Force your way through! Once the sorcerers are gone, the rest are nothing but rabble!”

“Like hell you will.”

“Gyaah!?”

One Oni, trying to break through by brute strength, was cut down across the torso.
The lightning-swift slash that felled the two-meter giant came from none other than the Woman-Hating Sword Saint, Wilhelm Lubase.

“Who are you calling rabble, you wooden-headed savage? Can’t you see below with that oversized body of yours?”

“Y-you—!”

“Almakain Sword Dance… Scatter Blossoms.”

“GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

Countless slashes erupted from Lubase’s blade.
The surrounding Oni were all cut down together, blood mist rising over the battlefield.

“Tough bodies… but so what? You’re only marginally better than the wooden training dummies.”

He taunted them, before briefly casting his gaze to the rear.

“…Damn it.”

Rest grimaced.
None of the others noticed through the mass of soldiers, but Rest knew—Lubase had definitely looked at him.

‘I cut down this many.’

‘And you? Just standing there watching?’

That was what Rest felt he was being told.
He was being provoked, challenged.
A fire of rivalry burned in him against his arrogant peer.

“Strange… I feel like I can’t afford to lose to you, even more than to the enemy.”

Rest bent his knees and leapt high.
Soaring over ten meters, he looked down upon the battlefield from above.

“As long as I avoid hitting allies, it’s simple, right? From up here, it’s easy!”

Around him, countless lightning spheres appeared.
It was multiple castings of the same spell—far simpler than juggling entirely different spells.

“Fire away!”

The spheres rained down upon the enemy.
Cast, fire, then cast again—like a storm, lightning fell upon the Oni.

“GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!”

“Damn sorcerer… gaaaahhhh!”

“Retreat! Fall back!”

Unable to withstand the relentless storm of lightning, the Oni were forced to retreat.

Thus, the opening skirmish came to a close, and Rest and his companions seized their first victory.
