Chapter 339: The Final Surprise

And so, the very first party ever hosted by the Clover Count’s household drew to a close.

The original theme had been to celebrate the completion of their mansion, but with so many rare dishes on display, the event had turned into more of a grand feast.

Regardless… with even royals and the kingdom’s most powerful nobles in attendance, the party was an overwhelming success. For the up-and-coming Clover family, it was a bright and promising debut.

“Well then… it’s finally over. Good work, you two.”

“Yes, thank you. You too.”

“Thank you very much.”

A crisp clink rang out as three glasses met.

Inside one of the rooms of the Clover estate, Rest, Viola, and Primula were toasting together.

The guests had already left, and while the cleanup was still unfinished, the three of them had decided to hold a private afterparty first.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Honestly, I feel like a weight’s been lifted off my shoulders.”

“Same here. It was my first time managing a party like this—I was nervous the whole time.”

“So was I. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst.”

Primula pressed a hand to her chest and let out a long sigh.

They were both only sixteen. Marquis’ daughters or not, they were still students—considered adults here, but still children by Japanese standards.

And yet they had just played hostess to the kingdom’s highest dignitaries, people on par with ministers and governors. Of course they had been nervous.

“I’m just glad everyone had fun. This really adds prestige to our Clover household.”

“Our…?”

Rest gave a wry smile at Viola’s words.

The wedding hadn’t yet taken place, but Viola and Primula were his fiancées. Thanks to this party, it was now widely acknowledged that they were the future Countesses of Clover.

“What, do you have a problem with that?”

“Rest-sama… are you saying you don’t want to marry us?”

“No, no! Not at all, I assure you. I was just thinking… this is the perfect timing.”

“‘Perfect timing’?”

The sisters exchanged puzzled looks, tilting their heads in unison.

Despite their opposite personalities, their little synchronized gestures always warmed Rest’s heart.

“To tell the truth, I’ve prepared one… no, two surprises.”

“Oh? And what would those be?”

“What could they be?”

“Come with me to the balcony and you’ll see.”

Rest opened the glass doors and led the sisters outside. They followed, curiosity in their eyes.

“I was considering showing this off during the party, but… I thought it would mean more if I dedicated it to the two of you first. This is my new spell.”

Channeling magic power, Rest raised his palm toward the sky.

It was a spell he had been meaning to unveil for some time. He had created several original spells already, but this one wasn’t for battle. This one was for joy.

“—Night Sakura.”

In the next instant, the heavens burst into flame.

Pink fire blossomed across the night sky, painting it with vivid flowers.

“Woooow…!”

The sisters gasped in wonder.

Rest launched more bursts, scattering colors across the dark canvas above.

“Amazing… it’s so beautiful!”

“I’ve never seen a spell like this before… did you really create it yourself?”

“Yes. I named it Night Sakura.”

That was Rest’s newest spell.

By casting multicolored flames into the sky for spectacle—it was, in effect, fireworks.

(This world doesn’t have fireworks. No gunpowder, so naturally no fireworks.)

Reproducing them with magic was simple enough technically.

(The real barrier is that no one ever thought of it. Magic is seen only as a weapon, a tool for war. Who would think to use it just to entertain?)

Even back on Earth, it had taken six centuries after the invention of gunpowder before fireworks were created for display.

After all, who would think to turn a killing tool into something for joy?

“Rest, this is incredible! So this was the surprise!”

“I’m so happy… but wait—you said there were two surprises, didn’t you?”

“That’s right—what’s the other one?”

Their voices sparkled with excitement, still marveling at the dazzling sky as they pressed for an answer.

This time, more nervous than during the entire party, Rest reached into his coat and pulled out the item he had prepared.

“A gift for you both… I hope you’ll accept it.”

“Eh…?”

What he offered were rings, crafted from iridescent crystal.

They had been carved by a jeweler from the gemstones he had once brought back from the centipede’s nest.

Sized precisely for their left ring fingers—he had secretly asked the maids to measure them.

“Once again… I ask you to stand by me. As my wives, please continue to support me.”

“…!”

Sliding the rings onto their fingers, Rest saw them freeze in shock for a heartbeat—then, realizing the meaning, they broke into radiant smiles and threw themselves into his arms.

“With joy!!”

“W-whoa!”

Toppled onto the balcony floor, Rest was smothered by the overjoyed sisters.

“Even if you beg, we’ll never let you go! Be prepared!”

“We’ll be together forever! Absolutely!”

“Haha… please, go easy on me…”

Both Viola and Primula were on the verge of tears, their happiness so overflowing that Rest knew the gift had been worth it.

“Ohh, I’m so happy! I feel like I could give myself to you completely right now!”

“Viola-neesan, why even wait for the ceremony at this point?”

“You’re right… as long as we don’t make a child, we could just do it now, couldn’t we?”

“Wha—!? What are you saying!?”

Flustered, Rest cried out in panic.

“It’s all right, Rest. Just count the stars for a while.”

“We’ll be gentle with you, Rest-sama…”

“W-wait—noooooooo!!”

Pinned down as the sisters began to slip their dresses off, Rest let out a scream more befitting a maiden than a man.
