Chapter 306: The Paper Tiger

For the wyverns, this mountain was paradise.

Mount Alpha, part of the Southern Mountain Range, had no monsters stronger than the wyverns. Though other powerful creatures lived on neighboring peaks like Mount Beta or Mount Gamma, as long as no one invaded their territory, there would be no conflict.

Here, on this mountain, wyverns could freely hunt and devour prey without fear.

“Grru?”

“Jyaa?”

But that day, the wyverns saw something.

A strange intruder boldly entered their territory.

‘…………’

It was massive — easily twice the size of a wyvern.

A hulking brown body, two sets of broad wings, and a massive jaw. Like a dragon, this fearsome-looking beast floated from the north and approached the summit of Mount Alpha.

It made no sound, drifting through the air like a leaf in the wind. Its silence made it even more eerie. The wyverns were instantly on high alert.

“JYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

“GRUUU! JAU-JAU!”

A group of wyverns took flight, surrounding the mysterious intruder.

They circled it from a distance, roaring at the larger creature

‘…………’

Yet the creature merely hovered, swaying in the air. It gave no reaction to their threats.

“JYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

“JYAA! JYAAAAAA!”

Eventually, the wyverns lost patience and launched an attack. They bit at its wings and whipped it with their tails, trying to bring it down.

‘…………’

But the creature didn’t budge. It made no counterattack. It just eerily hovered in place.

“Looks like it’s working.”

“Whoa… they haven’t noticed us at all.”

Watching the distraction unfold above, Rest and Yuri began to move.

The two of them were hidden inside a dome made of earth, quietly creeping toward the wyvern nest. The dome, created by Rest’s magic, moved without a sound at his command, inching its way forward.

This was Rest’s plan.

He would draw the wyverns’ attention with a decoy and then sneak toward the nest hidden within a magically created earthen dome.

The giant flying creature in the sky, of course, was a fake — another construct made with Rest’s magic.

It was a dummy monster crafted from earth and wood, kept aloft by the [Float] spell, drifting from upwind like a balloon.

Normally, [Float] required continuous casting or the effect would end.

But Rest had solved this by pouring a large amount of mana into the decoy and wrapping it in barrier magic.

The result?

The barrier suppressed mana dispersion and prevented the spell from being canceled, allowing the floating monster balloon to remain airborne until the infused mana ran out.

“A master’s touch… or something like that.”

Rest muttered playfully as he and Yuri slipped into the wyvern nest.

While the wyverns were distracted by the floating decoy, Rest targeted a lone wyvern that had separated from the others.

“As quietly as possible… and make sure it goes down in one hit before it can react…”

He waited for the right moment—

“JYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

A group of wyverns finally bit into the decoy and tore it apart.

In that instant, the dummy exploded with a blinding flash and a loud bang.

“JYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!?”

The wyverns screamed in surprise as the dummy burst like a firecracker.

Inside the balloon-like fake monster, Rest had hidden light and flame spells that detonated once it was destroyed.

“Now!”

At that moment, Rest cast his spell.

[Amaterasu] — a beam of radiant light pierced the head of the isolated wyvern, killing it in a single blow.

Thanks to the chaos and noise, the other wyverns didn’t even notice the attack. The one that was killed likely never even knew what hit it.

“Quick, let’s go!”

Yuri dragged the fallen wyvern’s body into the dome. With the target down and the materials secured, all that remained was to retreat.

“GYSHAA! GYSHAA!”

“SHYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

Above them, the remaining wyverns flapped their wings in panic and confusion.

They didn’t realize that one of their own had been taken.

Rest and Yuri quickly withdrew from the area, carrying off the wyvern’s corpse in secret.
