Chapter 298: The Timing of the Gift

When it comes to giving a present, timing is everything.

No matter how luxurious the gift is, if it’s handed over in a garbage dump or a public restroom, the reaction will inevitably be, “Why here of all places?”

That’s why, when giving a present, one must choose an appropriate setting.

(That said… I’m really bad at this kind of thing.)

Rest lacked the experience.

He’d rarely ever given presents to women before. After being taken in by the Marquis of Rosemary, he had given birthday presents to Viola and Primula before—but even then, it had only been small trinkets, as he had no money back then.

(But… this time’s clearly not something that can be taken lightly. This isn’t something you can just hand over casually…)

The rainbow gemstone was a rare and valuable mineral, and the ring crafted from it via Andrew’s connections was worth more than a commoner’s ten years of income.

To make it more intense—it was, in form, an engagement ring.

There wasn’t a strict tradition like “left ring finger” in this world, but the concept of an engagement ring did exist. Rest had even asked a maid from the Marquis’ house to secretly measure the size.

The problem was… where and when to give it.

(It’s cliché, but… maybe over dinner at a restaurant or something?)

That idea was nice in theory, but not very practical for Rest right now.

Lately, he had been stuck in his territory, heavily involved in building the town. Viola and Primula were also busy with their own responsibilities, so they rarely had time to meet.

Even when they could talk for a bit, going out for a fancy dinner just wasn’t happening.

In the end, even after the ring was completed, Rest had yet to find the right moment to give it, so he left it stashed in a drawer on his desk.

“Rest, it’s almost finished, isn’t it?”

“I’m really looking forward to it, Rest-sama.”

Viola and Primula spoke with excitement as they looked up at the manor under construction.

The location was within the Clover County, the very place that would one day be called the “territorial capital.”

At its center was the future lord’s residence, currently being built—and due to be completed in less than half a month.

That manor would eventually be Rest’s home as the ruling lord.

Though the rest of the town was far from finished, the symbolic manor was being prioritized and progressing steadily.

“Yeah, it’s almost there… but don’t you think it’s a bit too big?”

The manor was three stories tall—quite large by the standards of this world.
The grounds were so spacious, it felt like a whole forest could fit inside the garden.

“This is just right. What’s the point of being stingy?”

Viola said with an exasperated look.

“This is a frontier. There’s nothing here, but we have plenty of land! Why build a small house when you’ve got all this free space?”

“Well… I guess that’s true.”

“Rest-sama is a young, rising Count. He needs a grand manor to show strength, both inside and outside the territory.”

Even Primula chimed in to emphasize the point, leaving Rest no room to object.

(I lived in poverty in my past life… honestly, giant mansions just make me uncomfortable.)

If he were being honest, something the size of a stable would feel more fitting.

Of course, he couldn’t just put Viola and Primula in a shabby house either.

“Oh! We should throw a party when the manor is completed!”

Primula clapped her hands as if the idea had just struck her.

“The town isn’t done yet, so we don’t need to invite too many people… but let’s at least hold a small party with our parents and close relatives!”

“A party? Nobles do that sort of thing?”

“Socializing is part of a noble’s duty. Of course we do.”

Primula puffed her chest with pride.

Nobles often hosted parties—not just for fun, but to gather information, strengthen alliances, or show off wealth to intimidate political rivals. The reasons varied.

“We should really be inviting more people, but… inviting nobles to a half-built town would be rude. Let’s just keep it to family for now.”

“Sounds great. A little unveiling for our new home!”

Viola clapped her hands as if it were the best idea ever.

They continued making plans, leaving Rest completely in the dust.

“We’ll need to arrange all sorts of things—tables, chairs, food, dresses and tuxedos… and maybe even some entertainment?”

“What about a small orchestra? Is that over-the-top for just family?”

“Nothing is too much! This is our first party! We’re going all out!”

“Then let’s make a guest list too.”

“So much to do! I’ll have to call for help from my family!”

“…………”

(Why do they look so happy…? Isn’t party planning supposed to be a hassle?)

Rest tilted his head in confusion—but there was a reason he didn’t understand.

Rest wasn’t a born noble.

He didn’t know that preparing for a social gathering was considered the duty of a noble’s wife.

In other words, this was Viola and Primula’s first job as Rest’s future wives.

They weren’t officially married yet—but perhaps because of that, the two were more eager than ever to take the lead.
