Chapter 286: Crazy Ape

The Crazy Ape was a monster about the size of an orangutan, distinguished by its black fur, bloodshot red eyes, and ferocious fangs.

These monsters had an insatiable appetite.

They would eat anything that wasn’t stone or dirt—other monsters, animals, plants… even humans.

As long as there was an abundance of food, they rarely attacked people. But once food grew scarce, they would go berserk, destroying everything in sight.

They had even, at times, descended en masse upon human settlements, trying to devour everything in their path.

“We’ve known for a while that Crazy Apes had a nest in this area.”

Primula explained on behalf of the group.

“But Marquis Rosemary didn’t take any action. The Sabnock Plains are full of monsters and food sources, so the Crazy Apes never left their habitat. There were some casualties among adventurers who wandered too close, but as long as people stayed away, they weren’t a threat. That’s why they were left alone.”

The Crazy Apes’ nest was located in the northern part of the Sabnock Plains, not far from the Rosemary territory. Yet, until now, they had been left alone—treated like some taboo force better not disturbed.

In fact, some nearby residents were even grateful for their presence, since they helped thin out other, more aggressive monsters.

But… such a symbiotic relationship could only last so long.

As the plains were developed, the distance between humans and monsters would naturally shrink. And once the monsters’ numbers declined, the Crazy Apes would likely begin to see humans as food instead.

“When development progresses and the monster population decreases, they’ll start attacking humans… We need to deal with them now, while we still can.”

“Sooner or later, we’d have had to wipe out the Crazy Apes anyway.”

Rest agreed solemnly with Primula’s somber assessment.

It was sad, yes—but he had no intention of backing down.

The Crazy Apes were, by nature, human-eating beasts.

The only reason they hadn’t attacked yet was because they had other food. That didn’t mean they weren’t dangerous.

“Well then, it’s time to bust in and smash some skulls! I’m in!”

Yuri declared with fire in her eyes.

“That said… they’re numerous. We’ll need a proper plan.”

Viola added, pressing a finger to her lips thoughtfully.

Both sisters seemed in favor of taking action against the Crazy Apes.

“Yeah. Ideally, I want to wipe them out completely. No escapees—not a single one.”

Rest had already researched the threat level of the Crazy Apes.

If they escaped to another area, they’d attack humans or livestock there instead.

He didn’t want to leave future trouble for someone else. Better to take care of them all here and now.

“In that case, we’ll need to encircle them. Set fire to the area around the nest and trap them inside.”

Viola held up her index finger and proposed a brutal strategy.

“There are multiple magicians with us today… If we attack from all four directions with fire, they’ll have little chance of escaping.”

“…Right.”

Rest considered Viola’s suggestion.

A surprise attack followed by a blitz of flames. It was a reasonable plan—but it wasn’t without risks.

“…There’s a chance that, when cornered, the Crazy Apes might just charge through the flames. If they scatter and flee, we may miss some.”

Both humans and wild animals were known to act unpredictably when driven into a corner.

If no other options remained, the Crazy Apes might even risk running into fire.

He wasn’t opposed to the fire assault, but… he felt the plan needed a little something extra.

“In that case… it’s time for ‘Encircle them, but leave an opening’.”

“Encircle what now?”

Yuri tilted her head.

“What does that mean?”

Yuri picked up on Rest’s quiet murmur.

It was a term he had learned in his previous life from a book in the library—a classic tactic.

Now, he would put that strategy into action.

Rest began to explain his newly devised plan to his companions and the mages from the Rosemary household.
