Chapter 247: A Banquet and a Golden Egg Discovered

In the end, Rest ended up treating all the injured villagers that day.

For an ordinary magician, treating that many people would have led to complete magic exhaustion. However, with his unlimited magic power, it was no challenge for Rest.

By sundown, he had finished treating everyone and returned to the inn.

“Count Clover! Please, eat as much as you like!”

“This is our village’s finest secret liquor! I hope it suits your taste…”

That night, a banquet was held.

Rest and Celestine sat in the inn’s large hall, with an abundance of fish dishes placed before them. The villagers had all gathered, kneeling as they offered food and drinks.

“You are the savior of our village, my lord! Please, stay as long as you wish!”

“These fish were caught today… We lost most of our catch due to the monster attack, but we managed to secure this much. Please, enjoy…”

“Ah… Thanks. Everyone, feel free to eat as well.”

“””Y-Yes, my lord!”””

The villagers were deeply humbled, bowing as if worshiping a divine being.

“This village… is kind of uncomfortable in a way.”

Rest muttered.

“Well… I do think they’re all good people.”

Celestine replied hesitantly.

“Yeah… I’m sure they are, but still…”

Rest exchanged a wry smile with her.

“Sashimi! Please, enjoy!”

“Come, have some sake as well!”

“Madam, please, eat to your heart’s content!”

“No, we’re not actually married… but I’ll have the sashimi, thanks.”

The food was delicious.

The previous night’s meal had been great too, but today’s feast was even more extravagant.

The villagers had gathered whatever food and sake they could find to prepare this feast for Rest and Celestine.

“But with all the hardships caused by the monster attack… Is it really okay for them to be this generous?”

“I doubt it’s okay.”

Celestine whispered back.

“They probably scraped together whatever little they had left. That’s how much they appreciate you.”

“…I see.”

He was grateful for their gratitude, but it felt excessive.

If their kindness led to starvation, he’d never be able to sleep peacefully again.

“Celestine… Would it be possible to send food aid to this village? I’ll cover the cost.”

“Of course. I’ll arrange it right away.”

Celestine agreed without hesitation.

He knew he was being overly generous toward a village he had just met.

But Rest wasn’t the kind of person who could turn a blind eye to people suffering right in front of him.

(I know this is just self-satisfaction… but I think I can at least do this much.)

He had more money than he could ever spend—part of it being the dowager queen’s inheritance from Rodel.

(Shouko’s money, in a way. If it’s going back to a village she cherished, then it’s fine.)

“If you’re going this far, you might as well buy the entire village.”

Celestine suggested.

“Buy… the village?”

“That depends on the noble who owns this land. Some lords refuse to sell their lands, while others are willing to give up both their territory and titles easily. If you like the inn and the food here, why not claim this village as an estate of the Clover family? My father owns lands beyond his primary domain, after all.”

“…I see.”

For high-ranking nobles, owning multiple territories was common.

Once again, Rest was reminded of the sheer scale of the Crocus Ducal family.

“Well, I’ll think about that later…”

“Here, my lord, drink!”

“Yeah, yeah… I’ll drink.”

Rest took a sip of the liquor offered to him.

“…Huh?”

The amber liquid touched his tongue, and his eyes widened slightly.

This country had no drinking age restrictions, and Rest had consumed alcohol before—but this drink was noticeably stronger than anything he’d ever had.

“This is quite the unusual drink. It’s neither wine nor ale…”

Celestine noted.

She, too, took a sip and seemed puzzled.

It wasn’t made from grapes or barley like the common wines and beers of this land.

“Oh, this is made from potatoes harvested in our fields! It’s stronger because we heat it during the process.”

“…Heat? Wait, is this distilled liquor?”

Rest’s eyes widened in surprise.

This country mainly produced brewed alcoholic beverages like wine.

Distilled liquor—where alcohol content is increased through heat—wasn’t common.

“I’ve heard of distilled liquor before,” Celestine said. “It’s a strong drink produced in the Empire. It’s rare and expensive, only available to royalty and high-ranking nobles. Many have tried to uncover its production method, but the Empire guards that secret tightly.”

“Wait… So you do know about distilled liquor?”

“Yes, but importing it is costly. If someone could produce it domestically, it would be a huge business opportunity… But we’ve never managed to obtain the recipe.”

“This recipe was given to our village by Sanada-sama. Unfortunately, we can only produce small amounts, so we reserve it for special occasions.”

The villager explained.

“…”

A distilled liquor made from potatoes—resembling Japanese shochu—had remained hidden in this remote fishing village.

The reason it had never reached the market was likely because they lacked the resources to produce it at scale.

But if it were mass-produced, the potential profits would be enormous.

“…Rest, would you leave this matter to me?”

Celestine whispered.

She had clearly arrived at the same conclusion.

“I promise, I’ll handle it well. And of course, you’ll get a share of the profits.”

“…Alright, I’ll leave it to you.”

A hidden golden egg in an unlikely place.

The village, once merely a trace of the dowager queen’s past, turned out to be far more valuable than expected.
