Chapter 213: The Hidden World Unseen by Rest

In a certain country, in a particular place, stood a castle of alabaster construction.

A unique barrier surrounded it, making it impossible for anyone without authorization to approach or even perceive its existence.

This place was the headquarters of the Council of Sages, a castle named Avalon after the land of the Fairy King.

“………”

Within the castle, a man suddenly appeared.

Emerging from the void with a stern expression was none other than Leonardo Gascoigne, the chairman of the Council of Sages.

Known as the greatest magician of the modern era, Gascoigne was a figure of immense renown.

“Ah, you were out, were you?”

A voice called out to Gascoigne, who had just teleported into the castle.

The speaker was an elderly man with white hair and a beard, dressed in a traditional Eastern robe known as a kariginu.

“It’s rare to see you going out alone. Was there something you needed to take care of?”

“Kanehira…”

Gascoigne addressed the old man by name.

Kanehira Ichijo—a magician from the Far East and one of the senior members of the Council of Sages.

“I’ve found a new reincarnate. Likely, they possess the Ouroboros Loop.”

“Oh? The Ouroboros, you say? That’s quite the difficult ability to manage.”

Kanehira said, stroking his beard with a sympathetic expression.

“If I recall correctly, the previous wielder perished when their magic power spiraled out of control… and the one before them was used as a power source for a magic weapon until Lord Nuada granted them release. Infinite magic power… Such a force, beyond human control, is better left untouched.”

“That level of magic… Perhaps they, no, they alone, may be worthy of wielding the Ouroboros. Any power depends on its wielder. Could it be… that we’ve encountered such a being after centuries?”

“Gascoigne?”

“Indeed… If they stray from the path and fall into the abyss of forbidden magic, I will have to eliminate them. That is my duty as a protector of humankind, the very reason for my existence in this world…”

“…”

Kanehira furrowed his brow as Gascoigne muttered to himself.

“…It’s happening again.”

“I must act… Yes, that’s right…”

“Honestly… Gascoigne. Gascoigne!”

“Whoa!”

Kanehira called out loudly into Gascoigne’s ear, startling him so much that his shoulders jumped.

“What… What is it, Kanehira?”

“I should be asking you that! Your hearing is poor; don’t neglect the auditory enhancement spell!”

“Ah, yes, you’re right. I had forgotten.”

Gascoigne cast a spell, and a soft light glimmered near his ears.

“Now, everything’s fine. I can hear you clearly.”

“Good grief… You’re not young anymore, Gascoigne.”

Kanehira sighed, dropping his shoulders in exasperation.

Kanehira, though over a hundred years old and a long-standing member of the Council, was still younger than Gascoigne.

The toll of age had affected Gascoigne’s body significantly, and his hearing had been deteriorating, causing him to miss parts of conversations lately.

“Hmm… It might be time to change bodies.”

“Will you undergo a renewal?”

“Hmm… Yes. The international situation has grown unstable. It may be wise to update my body before any major conflict begins.”

Gascoigne rubbed his ageless face with his hand, lost in thought.

“In the Geisel Empire, a succession dispute has erupted, and in the Iwood Kingdom, a civil war has broken out. Meanwhile, in the eastern kingdom of Sindhu, a young prince has reportedly assassinated his father, the king, to usurp the throne.”

“In my homeland… Ashiya, there are also unsettling movements. I hope it’s merely a coincidence, but perhaps they are stirring the pot behind the scenes.”

The two men exchanged glances, their expressions heavy with concern.

The Council of Sages had a nemesis.

For untold ages, they had battled against those who sought to sow chaos and bring an end to the human world.

“Those scoundrels never learn… If that boy sides with them…”

“It seems we’re in for a busy time. Hardly kind to us old bones.”

Kanehira sighed.

Behind the veil of the visible world, the sages silently bore the weight of their struggles.

The truth of the world. The stirring of the abyss.

Of the forces moving in that shadowed realm, the young and inexperienced Rest remained completely unaware.
