Chapter 189: Heading East
Having accepted Urla’s request, Rest set out for the eastern plains alongside Yuri. They boarded a carriage provided by the Lavender family, taking a route that bypassed the wetlands by circling from the north.
Silence.
The interior of the carriage was steeped in an awkward, heavy quiet.
The boxy compartment had seats facing each other. On one side sat Urla and her female attendant, while Rest and Yuri occupied the seats opposite them.
(…What’s with this intense gaze? It’s almost oppressive.)
Rest shifted uncomfortably under Urla’s steady stare.
She didn’t speak a word, merely watching him through the curtain of her long bangs. Though her eyes were obscured, he could clearly feel the weight of her gaze.
“Urla, is there something you want to say?”
Rest asked, attempting to break the silence.
“Hahh…”
“She fainted!?”
Urla suddenly collapsed onto the seat, a small nosebleed trickling down. Her attendant swiftly supported her and cast a healing spell.
“Is she alright?”
Rest asked, alarmed.
“She is fine. The lady seems to have suffered from a case of overindulgence-induced poisoning.”
“O-overindulgence…?!”
Rest frowned in confusion. What could she have possibly overindulged in? She hadn’t eaten or drunk anything since they boarded.
“Is Urla… perhaps unwell or frail?”
“Lord Clover, I sincerely thank you.”
The attendant replied, seemingly evading his question.
“When her father disappeared, and her mother died, leaving her, no one remained in the family to care for the lady’s well-being. Her heart grew colder, and her emotions slowly withered away. But since arriving here, she’s shown so much more expression.”
“Expression…?”
To Rest, Urla seemed almost entirely expressionless. If this was her being expressive, how devoid of emotion had she been before?
“Oh, look, a herd of deer is running past!”
Yuri suddenly exclaimed, her head poking out the window.
“They look delicious, Rest.”
As usual, Yuri was in her own world, thoroughly enjoying herself.
“Shall I catch one for dinner tonight? I can bring it back and catch up in no time.”
“…Don’t bother. You’ll just make the carriage reek of blood.”
Rest sighed, chastising his carefree friend.
“More importantly, let’s talk about the mission. This wyrm in the wetlands—there’s only one of them, right?”
Rest shifted the conversation
The attendant turned to Urla.
“Lady Urla, Lord Clover is asking about the wyrm.”
“Yes, yes,”
Urla mumbled faintly.
“She confirms it. According to Lady Urla, only one wyrm has been observed.”
“I see…”
Rest replied, falling into thought.
This back-and-forth conversation feels inefficient.
Rest couldn’t help but wish the female attendant had explained everything from the start.
“Wyrm… dragon… but… mud… pair,”
Urla mumbled.
“Dragons generally have low reproductive rates and tend to act alone or in small groups. However, since worms live in the mud of wetlands, it’s possible there could be a hidden pair.”
The attendant translated smoothly.
“Barrier… active…,”
Urla continued.
“The monster-repelling barrier seems to have made them more active. Caution is advised,”
The attendant clarified.
“Wyrm… thick… strong, yes, yes,”
Urla said with unexpected enthusiasm.
“My lady… no matter how excited you may be, it’s unbecoming for a lady to share such crude jokes with gentlemen.”
The attendant scolded gently.
“That was a joke?!”
Rest exclaimed in shock.
Rest couldn’t decide whether Urla was unexpectedly amusing or just peculiar. The more he learned about Urla Lavender, the deeper her mystery seemed to grow. Yet, there was an odd sense of unease, as if he were staring into an abyss.
“Ah, there’s a wild boar too,”
Yuri commented from her seat, gazing out the window.
“It’s a shame to let it go to waste when it’s so fat and delicious-looking.”
Unfazed by the ongoing conversation, Yuri remained blissfully engrossed in her own observations.
