Chapter 187: A Request from Urla
Urla Lavender was the daughter of the Margrave family responsible for guarding the eastern border.
The Lavender Margrave family was one of the most militant noble houses, considered the kingdom’s sword alongside the magical Rosemary Marquis family and the martial Catreya Marquis family.
In the past, during the war with the neighboring Geisel Empire to the east, the Lavender family fought more valiantly than anyone, reportedly defeating countless enemy soldiers.
Of course, they were also the noble house that suffered the heaviest losses during the war.
“So, a dragon appeared in the wetlands on the eastern plains… a ‘Wyrm,’ you say?”
The scene shifts to an open café. Although it was called a café, it was located in a frontier village at the edge of the magic wastelands. The establishment was far from fancy, consisting of simple wooden crates for chairs and barrels for tables.
“A Wyrm… yes, they’re technically a type of dragon.”
The conversation, which had been conducted in formal language, had shifted to casual speech at Urla’s request.
In truth, there wasn’t much difference in status between Rest and Urla. Rest was the head of a Count family, while Urla was the sole heir of the Margrave family. The Lavender family, as a border noble house, held authority and land equivalent to that of a duke or marquis.
“By the way… your usual attendant isn’t with you today?”
“…Hmm.”
When Rest pointed this out, Urla averted her gaze. Following her line of sight, Rest spotted her attendant hiding in the shadow of a building.
“…Seriously?”
The female attendant, who had accompanied Urla to previous meetings, was peeking out from behind cover, watching Rest and Urla like a detective on surveillance duty.
“…What’s that about?”
“…Bodyguard?”
“Why does that sound like a question?”
Urla was an enigmatic girl.
Turning his attention back to Urla’s request, Rest began to consider the situation.
Although her words were brief and fragmented, combining her gestures and written notes, he managed to extract the necessary details.
The Lavender Margrave family was responsible for developing the land on the eastern plains, but a dragon species known as a Wyrm had appeared in the wetlands, disrupting the efforts.
“Recently… very… active.”
“…The Wyrm has been especially active lately.”
“Cause… barrier…”
“Ah, so the magic barrier meant to ward off monsters ended up provoking the Wyrm. In a way, I’m partly responsible for that.”
Though it had been Andrew who spearheaded the project, and the Lavender family had been informed in advance about the barrier and advised to remain vigilant, the fact remained that Urla was now burdened by the consequences.
(I’ll report this to Andrew, but I have a feeling I’ll be the one dealing with it in the end.)
While Wyrms were considered a lower tier of dragons, a dragon was still a dragon.
They weren’t likely stronger than the magic beast Sabnock, but they were undoubtedly formidable creatures.
“I’ll consult with Prince Andrew first, but I don’t mind taking on the monster. It’s already a shared venture, after all.”
Rest, as head of the Clover Count family, would eventually gain territory in the northern part of the plains. Similarly, the Lavender family was set to receive a portion of the eastern plains.
Given that they were soon-to-be neighbors, it made sense to build goodwill rather than sow discord.
“…Happy. Yay.”
When Rest gave his approval, Urla placed both hands on her cheeks and spoke with joy.
Her cheeks flushed a light red, and her lips curved into a delicate smile like a blossoming flower. Her bangs parted slightly, revealing her iridescent, jewel-like eyes.
“Well, well…”
“How adorable.”
Especially her eyes—they shone like a precious opal, shifting colors with the play of light.
(What an unusual color… Could it be something like a “magic eye”?)
Magic eyes, also known as “cursed gazes” or “holy stigmas,” refer to eyes imbued with unique magic abilities from birth. While rare, they exist—such as the ‘Vision Eye’ which allows the user to perceive the flow of magic as visual information.
(There are even magic eyes that can see a person’s past or future… It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel, but I can’t help feeling a little envious.)
“I’ve heard everything!”
A loud voice rang out suddenly.
With a dramatic swoosh, Yuri appeared, landing from above.
“Ugh…”
Yuri was carrying an elderly man—who appeared to be a healer—in a princess carry.
How he had managed to travel this way was a mystery, but the transported elder seemed thoroughly disoriented, his eyes spinning.
“So, this Wyrm hunt… I’m coming too!”
“Oh, you really were listening, huh?”
“Indeed, I have sharp ears! As an apology for the harm I caused earlier, I’ll dedicate myself wholeheartedly to defeating this monster!”
Yuri declared this boldly, her voice brimming with enthusiasm.
Though unexpected, it marked the beginning of a new mission.
Thus, Rest, spurred by Urla’s request, set out with Yuri to exterminate the Wyrm.
