Chapter 185: Continuing to Learn Barrier Magic
With Meitis, the court magician, erecting a barrier, the development of the “Subnock Plain,” which had been a magic wasteland, was now nearing completion.
The monsters were steadily disappearing from the plain. This was likely due to the effects of the “Monster Repelling” barrier.
Of course, the monsters hadn’t simply turned to dust. They had fled the area, and while they could potentially cause damage to the surrounding regions, precautions had been taken.
Traps for monsters were set up from the center of the plain out toward the edges, and many monsters were being eliminated by these traps. Unfortunately, some had slipped past and made it outside, but since the nearby villages and towns had been warned, the damage was minimal.
At this point, the “magic wasteland” had essentially become just another ordinary land. Now it was just a matter of inviting settlers and building towns and villages. The fertile land made it easy to grow crops, and immigrants were steadily arriving. The area would likely develop on its own from here.
“Hey, you lot. You’re building the magic circles too slowly. Hurry up and get it done!”
Meitis shouted.
“Yes, ma’am!”
Came the chorus of responses.
While the development of the plain was progressing, a temporary magic class was being held at one of the outposts of the development team.
Many young people were seated at tables, focusing on channeling their magic energy.
“The first step in learning barrier magic is to commit the magic formulas to memory! If you try to use them from vague recollections, you’ll just fail. So, write them down on paper and practice until you’ve memorized them!”
Meitis, the barrier magic expert, instructed as she wielded her staff.
Meitis, the longest-serving court magician, rarely left the royal palace, so opportunities to see her were rare. However, for some reason, Rest had gained her favor and was now receiving lessons in barrier magic. Other young people, eager to learn, had gathered as well.
“Please, teach me too!”
One student begged.
“Please, Meitis-sensei!”
Another cried.
These were students from the Magic Academy who had joined the development effort. They were eager to seize this rare opportunity to learn from Meitis.

“Hmph! I don’t have time for talentless fools!”
Meitis snapped as she slammed her staff onto the ground.
“That’s why you’d better follow along closely and not be judged as useless! I’m a tough teacher, so prepare yourselves, you brats!”
Though Meitis spoke harshly, she was, in fact, quite nurturing. Even as she grumbled about not teaching the “talentless,” she still provided opportunities for all the students who asked for her guidance.
“Ugh, this is tough… I’m completely failing.”
One student muttered.
“Barrier magic really tests your instincts.”
Another commented.
Viola and Primula were also participating in the class. They were both mumbling as they drew magic symbols with their magic.
“You two aren’t doing badly. I’m the one who’s completely hopeless.”

Yuri said, scratching her head.
Yuri, for some reason, was also attending the class, but due to lacking enough magic power, she wasn’t able to make any progress.
“Hmph… The daughters of Albert aren’t doing too bad. Especially Primula… You’ve got a good knack for this.”
Meitis said, walking over to the Rosemary sisters with a smug look.
“You’re good at delicate work like sewing and knitting, right? People like you are well-suited to barrier magic. Keep at it.”
“Thank you, Meitis-sensei,”
Primula said, smiling proudly.
“As for Catreya’s daughter… Well, you’re not cut out for this. It’d be better for you to take up running outside. That’d be more useful.”
Meitis continued.
“Ugh… I knew it,”
Yuri sighed, her shoulders slumping.
“Also, kid, you can stop now.”
Meitis said, turning her gaze to Rest, who was sitting at the same table.
“I’ve got nothing else to teach you. You’ve already mastered it all.”
“Thank you, Sensei.”
Rest said, giving a respectful bow and playing with the magic circle floating between his hands.
It had been only a week since Meitis started teaching, but Rest had already mastered all the barrier techniques she had shown him. Normally, learning even one of these techniques could take more than a month, sometimes even years, but Rest had learned them just by seeing them once.
“Such an amazing talent… Seriously, you’re such a brat with no charm. It makes an old woman like me jealous.”
Meitis said with a wicked smile.
“You’re too kind. It’s because of your excellent teaching, Sensei.”
Rest replied politely.
“Flattery, huh? You’ve got talent, not just in magic, but also in seducing women, I see… If we’d met a hundred years earlier, I might have pushed you down right then.”
Meitis continued with an eerie grin.
“…”
Rest’s face tightened in discomfort at her unsettling smile. Of course, he didn’t let his expression change, since it would be rude.
“I’ve taught you all the barrier magic I can. The rest… are secret arts that even most qualified people aren’t allowed to investigate. If you really want to know, try becoming a court magician first.”
There are magic spells, like the “Crime Prevention” barrier, where even knowing about their existence is forbidden. Only those with special qualifications, like court magicians, are allowed to study them.
“Thank you, I really appreciate it.”
Rest said.
“Hmph… No need for thanks. Keep practicing, and become a great magician who can make the old lady’s life easier,”

Meitis grumbled, walking away toward the other students.
“Wow… You’re amazing, as expected of Rest.”
Viola said.
“Indeed, impressive, Rest-sama.”
Primula added in unison.
“It’s really not that much.”
Rest replied humbly.
“It really is. Just memorizing these shapes… I’d get dizzy.”
Yuri said, twirling his fingers beside his head.
Yuri, being more of a muscle-head, wasn’t particularly good at studying. She had scored decently on the academy’s entrance exams, so she probably had the motivation, but her aptitude seemed lacking.
“I’m good at memorizing shapes and formulas… Always have been.”
Rest said.
Even in his previous life, math had been his strong suit. Compared to things like calculus, the barrier magic formulas seemed quite simple.
“Well, I’ll go outside so I’m not in the way. You two, don’t push yourselves too hard.”
“I’ll go out too. Like she said, I’ll go for a run outside.”

“Okay, see you later.”
“See you later.”
Rest and Yuri left the makeshift classroom building and headed outside.
