Chapter 184: I’ve Mastered the Barrier Technique

“The magic of the plains has settled… It looks like the barrier is complete.”

The “Sabnock Plains,” which had been continuously spawning powerful monsters, was now transformed. The magic energy, once a source of danger, had become a resource usable by humans. If people were to settle here and build towns, it could certainly develop into a prosperous and peaceful city.

“Hmph… Were you watching, you brats?”

“Y-Yes… It was amazing.”

Rest said, his voice filled with awe.

“Amazing…?”

“That’s not important. What matters is whether you’ve learned something.”

Meitis scoffed, tapping her cane against the ground.

“The work of the elderly is to pass wisdom down to future generations. If you just stand there and gawk, it’ll be a problem. You better study properly, or all my effort will have been for nothing.”

She added, wagging her finger at them.

Rest scratched his head sheepishly, laughing nervously.

“Ah… you’re right. I understand.”

Seeing is believing. I’ll show you what I’ve learned.

“[Monster Repelling Barrier: Anti-Monster Field].”

Rest hesitantly chanted the spell, copying what he had seen. A glowing pattern began to form above his head, gradually building into a magic circle. While it was smaller compared to the one Meitis had created, it spun like a halo and formed a hemispherical dome around Rest.

“The range is only about 20 meters, but I was able to create a barrier to keep monsters away. I should be able to move while maintaining the barrier as well.”

Rest explained, feeling the continuous flow of magic being absorbed into the barrier.

Rest had created the barrier above his own head, and he could feel the magic constantly being drawn in. Unlike when magic circles were inscribed on the ground, this barrier allowed him to move with it.

“…”

Meitis blinked in surprise at Rest’s execution. After a moment, she swung her cane in a dissatisfied manner.

“Hmph!”

“Ow…!”

Meitis’s target was the exhausted Lucas, who had collapsed onto the ground. She struck his forehead with her cane, and he groaned in pain, clutching his head.

“You’re just like Albert—an unappealing brat! How boring!”

Meitis muttered, clearly annoyed.

“S-Sorry?”

Lucas winced, rubbing his forehead.

“Well, now that I have some time before I return to the palace, I’ll teach you some barrier techniques. You better engrave them into your brain!”

Meitis said, still frowning.

“Thank you very much!”

Rest replied, feeling lucky for the rare opportunity. It was a privilege to learn from the kingdom’s top barrier specialist, and he gratefully bowed his head.

“You’re amazing, Rest! And Grandma was so cool!”

Yuri exclaimed while clapping.

“Meitis-sama is truly impressive… even though she used tools, she cast such a powerful barrier all on her own!”

Isis marveled.

The others watched with keen interest, observing the magic circle on the ground with fascination.

“Come to think of it… This barrier is layered with four different ones,”

Yuri remarked suddenly.

“Monster repelling, abundance, disease prevention… What was the other one?”

“Crime prevention…”

Lubase answered, quickly realizing he had spoken to the person he disliked and turned his face away awkwardly.

“Ah… Yeah, she did say that,”

Andrew, who had been standing behind them, smiled awkwardly. He then turned to Meitis, the one who had cast the barrier, and scolded her gently.

“Meitis-sensei… The ‘Crime Prevention’ barrier is classified information.”

“Hmm? Oh, right. I forgot about that,”

Meitis muttered, scratching her temple with the handle of her cane.

“It’s not something to hide, though… Honestly, has the world really changed this much? It’s so hard for old people to live nowadays.”

She added with a sigh.

“Ah… Prince Andrew, could it be that this is something we shouldn’t know?”

Rest asked, a bit uneasy.

“Well, technically, yes… But, it’s fine,”

Andrew said, spreading his arms dramatically.

“The ‘Crime Prevention’ barrier is exactly what it sounds like. It has the effect of suppressing crimes committed by people inside the barrier. It reduces violent impulses and malicious intentions, making it harder for crimes to occur. In short… it’s a barrier that interferes with the mind.”

“Interferes with the mind…?”

Rest widened his eyes.

He couldn’t believe such a magic existed—one that affected the minds of a large number of people. Could this barrier be in place even in the royal capital?

“Even though the purpose is crime prevention, I’m sure you wouldn’t like the idea of someone interfering with your mind, right? That’s why the existence of this barrier is kept secret.”

Andrew continued.

“Well… I suppose that makes sense,”

Rest muttered, agreeing. Even if the intent was to prevent crime, the idea of having one’s mind controlled or influenced would be uncomfortable for anyone.

“However… crimes are still happening. In the royal capital and in other towns.”

Lubase interjected.

He shared the same question as Rest—if such a barrier existed, why was crime still prevalent in the world?

“This barrier only suppresses the malicious intent that leads to crimes, to a certain extent. It doesn’t turn bad people into good ones, nor does it erase their desires. It only provides a very minimal effect.”

Andrew explained.

“If all the magic from this Dragon’s Vein were directed towards this barrier, it might be able to eliminate crime completely, but… well, the people would probably lose their humanity along with it.”

Meitis added with a chuckle, shaking her shoulders.

Hearing this, Rest finally understood why the existence of this barrier was kept secret.

(I see… For example, if the effect of the barrier was changed from ‘crime prevention’ to something like ‘domination’ or ‘charm,’ it could potentially brainwash everyone in the town…)

Rest thought to himself.

Perhaps there had been such cases in the past.

“About the ‘Crime Prevention’ barrier, it’s strictly prohibited to discuss it. Everyone, forget what you’ve heard,”

Andrew said firmly.

The group nodded quietly in response.
