Chapter 182: The Barrier Master and His Journey

The army was larger than usual, but… there were no particular incidents as we made our way deeper into the plains.

We encountered monsters a few times along the way, but we handled them without any issues.

The distant enemies were taken care of by Isis using magic to snipe them. The closer enemies were dealt with by Yuri using her legs and Lubase with his sword.

“Leave this to me! Power Slash!”

If there was a problem… it was that Argyle, the knight who usually didn’t step forward, was trying way too hard to stand out, using flashy moves and even unnecessary finishing techniques.

“It was a tough enemy, but… it was nothing in front of my sword!”

He struck a heroic pose, while occasionally glancing back at Andrew behind him.

It seemed that he was trying to impress the royal in front of him.

As a result, the usual formation was disrupted, and it seemed like his efforts were backfiring, but he was the only one who didn’t seem to realize it.

(Well, even if he’s a distraction, it’s not like we’ll be defeated in a place like this…)

We had already hunted down most of the troublesome corrosion beasts.

It was a bit sad to no longer be able to feast on their unusually delicious meat, but there was no real danger in the center of the plains.

We were able to reach our destination without troubling the guards that Andrew brought along.

“This is the center of the plains… it hardly looks like a cursed land.”

Andrew, standing up from the carriage seat, exclaimed in surprise.

In the past, weeds had grown tall enough to surpass human height, blocking the way in every direction… but now, most of the area was paved with stone, creating an artificial space.

If there had been walls or a roof, it might have looked like a hall or a stadium.

“We paved it with magic. It may get in the way when building structures, though…”

“Still, with such a vast area paved in stone, I’d like to build a town that makes use of this land.”

Andrew stroked his chin thoughtfully. His expression was that of a ruler, and it was clear that he had received proper education as a member of the royal family.

“Count Clover, I won’t let the land you cleared and paved go to waste.”

“Thank you for your consideration.”

“Now then… Master Maitis. Would you mind taking care of things here?”

“Yes, yes, the old hag will get to work… now then.”

Maitis got off the carriage, leaned on his staff, and looked around.

“The source of the magic energy is… over there. See, right there! Hurry up and carry the old woman!”

“Ugh…”

Maitis struck the exhausted Lucas, who had collapsed after carrying the luggage, with his staff.

“I’m tired from carrying all the bags… please let me rest for a bit…”

“What are you saying with a body like a cabbage? Lose some weight, will you?”

“Uggghhh… you’re so harsh on me…”

Lucas winced as he was struck again.

Despite the harsh treatment, Lucas, recognizing their difference in status, reluctantly agreed to carry Maitis on his back, becoming her legs.

“Over there, go on. Hurry up.”

“Ugh…”

“You’re going too far, idiot! More to the right! That’s too far, you fool!”

“Ugh…”

Lucas staggered as he carried Maitis and eventually arrived at a certain point.

“This is the spot. No mistake… it seems the center of the dragon’s vein is here.”

The area was already paved, covered with cobblestones.

Maitis got off Lucas’s back and struck the ground with her staff.

“Whoa…!?”

Suddenly, the cobblestones that Rest had laid out were blown to pieces.

It was certain that magic had been used, but… I had no idea what exactly had happened.

“I can’t see the magic formula… Could this be some kind of barrier magic…?”

Rest’s greatest talent was his infinite magic power, but he also possessed the ability to use any magic he’d seen once. This ability was activated by reading the magic formulas embedded in the spells of others. However, with the magic Maitis used, I couldn’t see any formula at all.

“I don’t mind sharp kids. The old woman always uses barrier magic.”

Even though Rest hadn’t raised his voice much, it seemed he had been heard.

“You’re using a spell to constantly sense magic presence, aren’t you? It’s something similar.”

“…”

It seemed she had also seen through that.

Once again, it was clear that Maitis was an extremely high-level magician.

(If we’re talking combat ability, I don’t think I’m weaker than her… but the precision of her magic is on a whole different level. She’s better than any mage I’ve met so far…)

If I were to compete, it would likely be against someone like the headmaster, Velroyd Hahn.

The headmaster, known as both a sage and a wise man, was undoubtedly one of the top magicians in the country.

“Come on, hurry and catch up. Since we’re here, you might as well learn something.”

“Yes, I will learn.”

“You, prepare the magic tools quickly! Don’t keep the old woman waiting!”

“Ahii—!”

“Come on, run! Dash, dash!”

Lucas was struck on the rear with Maitis’s staff, stumbling as he hurried to the pile of luggage.
