Chapter 180: Meeting the Legendary Mage

“Master Jarana Meitis… Could you be the ‘Meitis of the Void’!?”

Upon hearing the old woman’s name, Rest’s eyes widened in surprise.

‘Meitis of the void’ was the oldest court mage, serving the Kingdom of Iwood for at least seventy years. She was said to surpass even Headmaster Verloid, the Sage in the art of barrier magic.

It was a well-known legend that during a war with a neighboring country, Meitis encased an entire fortress in a barrier, enduring a month-long siege without losing a single soldier. This mastery of cutting off space entirely earned her the title ‘Void-Cleaver.’

“It is an honor to meet a legendary mage. My name is Rest Clover.”

“Heh… you’re good at flattering an old hag aren’t you? I don’t dislike smooth-talking brats.”

It seemed like the first impression was favorable. Meitis tapped her staff on the ground and snorted.

“I heard you were this one’s son, so I was curious to see what you were like… Not bad at all. Quite different from your father!”

“Ugh…”

Meitis struck Lucas with his staff again. Lucas, his face turning red with humiliation remained silent due to the difference in their statuses.

“Meitis-sama has agreed to set up the barrier around the Monster territory. Lord Ebern will be assisting.”

“Oh, I see.”

Rest sighed with relief at Andrew’s words. He had been worried that Lucas would be responsible for setting up such an important barrier. But if the task was in the hands of the greatest barrier mage Meitis, then he could rest easy for now.

“This old hag tends to be a bit demanding so I brought this guy along since he seemed to have some time on his hands.”

Meitis said slyly, tapping Lucas’s shins with her staff.

“I hear… this man tormented you for years. Now seeing the son he abandoned turn out to be so capable must be eating him up inside. Serves him right!”

“Ugh… Guh…”

As Meitis laughed like a witch, Lucas’s face twisted in agony. It seemed she had hit a nerve.

(So, that’s why this man is here… Could it be that this was all the Master’s scheme?)

Rest had initially thought Andrew’s decision to bring Lucas was insensitive, but now he understood.

“I’ve put him in charge of all the menial tasks so feel free to use him as you like! After all, he’s only an honorary viscount with no heir to inherit his title. Don’t hesitate; no matter how you treat him, this old hag won’t mind!”

“Thank you for your consideration.”

With a wry smile at Meitis’s unique personality, Rest for the first time in his life, felt a twinge of sympathy for his toxic parent Lucas.

No matter how terrible a father he had been… seeing him so diminished like this made Rest feel pity.

(Well it’s all his own fault… but still, if only he had reached out when my mother was sick.)

When his mother fell ill with an incurable disease that healing magic could not treat, Rest had worked tirelessly to find a solution. At that time, he had asked Lucas for money through a maid who was a friend of his mother’s but he was flatly refused.

(I don’t intend to dig up the past. Even if I had received money to buy medicine, it might have only prolonged her suffering.)

Even so… there is no helping hand extended to those without mercy. Rest was not a saint. He could not lower a thread to the lost souls who had fallen into hell.

“Well then, let’s hurry up and go. Lead me to the point where we can set up the barrier.”

“Yes of course… Lord Ebern there are the bags over there, so please take care of them.”

“Wha… me!?”

“Yes of course.”

Rest smiled brightly and told his father who looked astonished.

“In the monster territory, we need to conserve our magic power so please carry them without using any spells okay?”

“Ugh…!”

Lucas moved his mouth like a fish out of water. As a small act of revenge,

Rest made Lucas carry the heavy bags.
