Chapter 3: The Appropriate Adventurer Rank

And so, the next day...

“Uh, could you please repeat that?”

“I’m asking you to lower my adventurer rank. To C-rank.”

“Did I mishear you? Could you say that again, please?”

“No, really, I—”

I had come to the Adventurers’ Guild to get my rank lowered to a more suitable level.

If my memory serves me right, the guild had already suspected Lloyd’s true capabilities.

So, I thought they would easily lower it if I requested it myself, but it seemed it wouldn’t be that simple.

“You were always complaining, ‘Why am I not S-rank?!’ and now you suddenly want to lower your rank? What’s going on, Lloyd?”

“Well, there’s a lot on my mind.”

The guild staff member, whose nameplate read Ena, gave me a skeptical look.

When I glanced behind her, I noticed other staff members also giving me cold stares.

…Apparently, Lloyd wasn’t well-liked by the guild staff either.

I never imagined he had been pestering the staff to raise his rank.

“A lot on your mind, huh.”

“Yes. Besides, you know as well as I do that my real strength isn’t A-rank level.”

“Uh… n-no, that’s not true.”

When I said that, Ena-san turned her face away awkwardly.

Looks like my memory was spot on.

In that case, a bit more persuasion should work.

“Please, just do it. I don’t want an adventurer rank that doesn’t suit me.”

“…Alright. If you insist that much, I’ll accept your request to downgrade your rank.”

When I clasped my hands together and pleaded, Ena-san blinked and finally agreed.

Thus, I succeeded in lowering my adventurer rank before Kane could exact revenge on me.

Yes, this should be fine.

If my rank remained unusually high, Kane could retaliate at any time.

“Oh, and also, I’m leaving ‘Dragon King’s Flame,’ so please handle that paperwork too.”

“What?! You’re leaving?! But aren’t you the leader of that party, Lloyd?!”

Ena-san’s shocked voice caused a stir among the staff behind her.

Well, I guess it’s only natural to be surprised.

As I watched Ena’s wide eyes, I continued speaking.

“I’ve appointed Kane as the new leader, so there shouldn’t be any problems.”

“Kane?! How did that happen?”

As I was considering how to explain to the bewildered Ena, the guild’s doors burst open.

And there stood Kane and his party.

“Kane! You’re amazing!!”

It was Zard, the shield-bearer, who was praising Kane from behind.

Walking slightly ahead of Kane were Lena and Emi, one on each side.

Wait, are they both linking arms with Kane?

“Wow, I didn’t know you were this strong. We should throw a party for Kane’s new leadership today.”

“Kane, you were secretly protecting us all along. That’s so cool.”

Kane was being praised by the party even more than Lloyd had been.

…What a blatant change in attitude.

“N-no, it’s all thanks to you guys.”

Watching Kane blush with embarrassment brought a relieved smile to my face.

I had been a little worried, but it seemed Kane would do just fine in that party.

And if he fit in well, he wouldn't think of exacting any sort of revenge on me.

"Oh, by the way, do you think you could recommend me to another party?"

As I watched Kane and the others enjoying themselves, I turned my attention back to Ena-san.

She scratched her cheek awkwardly.

"Well, that's a bit difficult."

"Difficult? Even for a beginner adventurer's party?"

"No, that's not the issue... You see, everyone in 'Dragon King's Flame’ except for Kane has been blacklisted by all the other parties. I can't recommend you to anyone."

"...What?"

I couldn't help but let out a dumbfounded sound at her unexpected words.

It seemed I had no time to be worrying about others.

And so, I finally realized that I had indeed reincarnated as the villain.
