Chapter 7: The Flow of Water

Fifteen days have passed since I was confined. In addition to practicing basic movements and combat techniques, a new training was added to my training – it took me ten days to get used to it.

“Ahh~…”

“Don’t sound so listless… at first, you could barely stand, right?”

There was a ledge inside the waterfall’s basin, and I was standing on it, getting soaked by the falling water.

At first, if I let my guard down even a little, I would fall into the water. The water around the ledge is deep, making it hard to climb out, and my teacher had to help me  — but even so, my meditation was never interrupted.

“Since I can’t take a bath in the outside world, it feels rather refreshing once you get used to it.”

“It must be tough for a noble person like you to only be able to take a bath sparely… but I don’t know the customs of this world, so I can’t say for sure.”

“In the palace, I used to take baths in a large marble bathhouse, together with many maidservants.”

“That is… you were originally a man, weren’t you? And you only realized that when you summoned me.”

“Haha… It would have been terrible if I had regained my memories from the moment I was born. Maybe it’s better I remembered it late.”

When my teacher signaled that it was about time, I swam out smoothly from under the waterfall and reached the shore.

Even in the spiritual realm, my clothes get wet, but the teacher just has to point at me and they dry – when the teacher waves his finger at my hair to dry it, a breeze blows and it quickly becomes smooth again.

“The magic I can use has five elements… I could probably add more if I wanted, but I believe five are enough for most purposes through combinations,”

It turns out my teacher can use not only water magic but also four other elemental attributes. Since mastering even one takes several days, I was training to learn water magic first.

“It’s strange, but when I cleanse my mind in the spiritual realm, I don’t feel much discomfort outside either.”

“Your mind and body are in tune with each other. Your training here is changing your body little by little. Of course, you will grow faster if you actually move your body.”

“That’s right. Even when I hold my teacher in this world, I don’t feel his weight anymore.”

“That’s true. When I was in the real world, I no longer felt the weight when holding you.”

“Even adults take time to reach such a state. Well, it must be because I am a sacred relic, and the more you wield me, the more you ‘become accustomed to’ it,”.

“I think that feeling of ‘familiarity”  is what increases my proficiency.”

“Eh?”

I explained the concept of proficiency levels from games to my teacher. The teacher didn’t seem opposed to such explanations and listened with interest, resting a hand on his chin.

“Hmm… proficiency, is it? From my perspective, you’re close to reaching the next level. But normally, one would improve his skills through repeated actual combat, so it’s a slow process.”

“Since I’m fighting under your guidance master, isn’t that enough practical experience?”

“If I were to respond to your attacks, that would be a different kind of training. Ideally, the opponent would grow stronger gradually in such practice… hmm?”

When my teacher looked down, he saw the mouse scurrying about at his feet. His eyes widened, and as if he had just had an idea, he clasped his hands and began forming a shape with them.

“Master, what’s that…?”

“I’m making a seal. Among the opponents I’ve fought so far, one I think you could stand against is… this one,”

“Huh…!”

The mouse at his feet was enveloped in light — and in an instant, it grew larger and took on the appearance of a tall man holding a sword.

“I used my magic to give this mouse a human form. Among the warriors I’ve fought, this one isn’t the strongest, but he is a skilled swordsman.”

“Like a wooden training dummy?”

“More or less, but he’ll strike with a real sword. First, try fighting as you wish. “

I wasn’t expecting combat training to begin like this— though I think the mouse probably doesn’t even understand what’s happening, it’s holding a sword in a mid-level stance.

I also took up my wooden sword and prepared to fight — and just then, the swordsman in front of me made his move.

“T-Ta-ta-aaaah!”

My opponent chose to thrust. He was relentlessly aiming for my eyes, but I deflected it with the tip of my sword and ran through to return the blow.

“Excellent. Because what you’ve practiced so far connects to actual combat now, you managed to read his thrust,” my teacher said.

“I realized he was aiming for a vital spot and moved instinctively,”

“Let’s see how many hits you can land without taking a single blow from this opponent. Want to try?”

Not taking a single hit — that’s right, if I got wounded while leaving the prison and got injured without being able to treat the wounds, it would be over.  ,

“In a world where magic exists, healing magic probably does too, but I don’t know how much it can heal. And there might not be a healer nearby  who can conveniently mend your wounds if you get hurt.”

“So, the principle is to remain unscathed,” I concluded.

I faced the swordsman again. This time, he was moving the tip of it’s sword very slowly, not attacking much — but…

Instead of attacking, he was ‘parrying’ my wooden sword. Using a technique similar to a ‘parry’ in games, he was trying to throw off my stance — but I pressed forward.

“Fuh!”

Facing his thrust, I momentarily pushed against it, then deflected it. When he stumbled, I swung my sword, which I had switched to with one hand.

“Ashrina, aim to cut — strike with intent!”

A wooden sword can’t cut, but I discarded that notion and focused solely on slicing as my teacher instructed.

“Haaah!”

I swung a horizontal cut as I turned around. With that strike, I left a slash mark on the swordsman’s upper arm.

“…There’s water on the wooden sword!”

“As expected… you’ve continued waterfall training to grasp the flow of water,”

The sensation was the same as when a sword was covered in magic, coated with a thin layer of water. The strike I delivered in this state became as sharp as a blade, like a real sword.

It was dangerous when my sword was deflected earlier, but I managed to respond properly… Teacher?  *

“…No, I am genuinely impressed. After all, this is the first time I’ve ever taught someone magic,”

The teacher said, looking very pleased, which made me feel a bit embarrassed as well – but then…

“Hiya…!”

The swordsman mercilessly swung his sword at me again. I barely dodged, but a bit of my hair got cut off.

“Hmm… right, hair.”

“I think if you go outside the spiritual realm, it will return to normal, so it’s okay if you get it cut,”

“Well, your hair color alone makes it obvious you’re part of the royal family.”

“Once I leave the prison, I don’t know if I’ll be able to act openly with my true identity…”

“That’s right. In the spiritual realm, I can use various kinds of magic, but in the real world, I can’t do that — at least for now,” my teacher replied.”

“Sqeak”

He doesn’t seem to understand what we’re talking about, but the swordsman appears eager to continue the practice —is he belligerent?*

“This mouse will also undergo training, but it probably won’t become as strong as a human,”

“I don’t understand, but it would be amazing if that were to happen!”

From then on, we kept sparring, taking breaks, sparring again, doing basic swings, chasing after my teacher, engaging in waterfall meditation — and as we repeated these activities, time in the spiritual realm passed.

How much time do I have left? I must prepare myself so that I won’t regret it if the situation suddenly changes – and then I will definitely become free.
