Chapter 20 — Interrogation

(ahhh… soaking in the hot bath really melts away my fatigue…)

Although the interiors of the bathrooms in the Royal Palace in Forlant and this mansion are quite different, they both have one thing in common: they are comfortable.

“The bath at your house always smell so nice, lady . We don’t burn incense at home, so it’s quite refreshing.”

“it’s a habit brought in by the head maid who used to work for the Chanoir family. Um… well, apparently, the scent is used not only to refresh your mood while bathing but also for other purposes.”

“Well… when you put it that way and act so suggestively, I find myself curious about that scent as well.”

(Both of you, I think it’s a bit early to be talking about such things…)

Although lady Phyllis is being vague, her demeanor suggests that there might be an aphrodisiac-like scent involved. Now that I think about it, why did the head maid bring it in?

Since coming to this estate, I haven’t seen Phyllis’ mother.

“Um… I’ve met your father, but I haven’t seen your mother, lady Phyllis…”

“oh right, we haven’t talked about it. My mother is in charge of diplomacy for Glasbel, and she’s currently away in another city. I’ve heard she’ll be back soon, but I don’t know if I’ll get to see her before I leave here.”

“Knowing her, I’m sure she would fly back as soon as she could if you and your brother were to return.”

“More importantly, I’m thinking about my father. My mother is the type of person who would protect my father the most, so the current situation must be incredibly frustrating for her—much more than for us.”

If Lady Phyllis’ mother was searching for a cure for her husband’s illness wherever she went, then perhaps I should take action as soon as tomorrow.

“…Well, it’s about time we get out. Lady Ashrina looks completely fine, but I feel a little dizzy.”

“that’s not true; I’m feeling pretty dazed myself. Um, can I take a cold shower?”

“is that… perhaps some kind of special training or something unique to you, lady Ashrina? Phyllis, shall we try that too?”

“Um, well… I’m used to doing things like taking a shower under a waterfall. if you try to imitate that, you’ll catch a cold, so it’s not good.”

“Practicing bathing in a waterfall… I guess I’ll have to wait until I can do that. No, first I need to get lad  Ashrina’s approval and have her become our teacher.”

The two of them get out of the bath. They were looking at me instead of going to the changing room, I made a X sign with my fingers to tell them not to look at me, then got out after them.

◆◇◆

After dinner, I was called by Lord Eric and led from the estate’s garden down into the underground prison.

The underground air Is cold and clammy. The only light is from a lantern carried by the escorting soldier, flickering and swaying, making the view hazy.

After walking down the corridor for a while, I saw iron bars—inside, the captured soldiers are confined.

The mansion guards open the iron gates, and Duke Glasbel and Lord Eric go inside. I was allowed to be present as well – I had brought my weapon with me just in case.

“…You split into two groups, one acting as a decoy and attacking my estate. Your goal was to steal the food being transported and to kill me. Now that you’ve failed, tell me—what do you think?”

Though he spoke in a quiet tone, just watching him send chills down your spine—it’s the kind of situation where if the bandits make a wrong move, they’ll be executed on the spot.

I’ve only seen one side of him, a gentle person, but Duke Glasbel bears the weight of his people’s hopes. I can only imagine how furious he must have been at the sporadic acts of plundering.

“…It’s very disappointing. If only we hadn’t been interrupted, everything would have gone smoothly. What should I say? My lord, you don’t have much time left.”

“…If you mock my father…”

“By going smoothly, do you mean the plan to hand Glasbel over to your employers?”

“if  you say so… Gah!”

Duke Glasbel himself slapped the man across the cheek. Lord Eric, who had started to make a move, opens his eyes wide in surprise.

“…If you have guessed that much, then you also understand that I won’t be revealing anything.”

(This man, he’s the swordsman riding the black horse… I guess the person in command was behind the diversion. I underestimated Duke Glasbel.)

“I will delay your transfer by a few days. you will go hungry in that time just like how you tried to steal our food. I won’t kill you, though.”

The man tried to spit blood at him, but Duke Glasbel sensed it and slapped him once more.

“Ah… Gah…”

“A child, you tried to lay your hands on these precious people who hold brought us food—just thinking about it makes my stomach boil.”

(…I feel the same way, but the thing bandits want to avoid most is exposing information. They’re probably confident they won’t be killed.)

“…This is enough for today. Let’s go outside.”

Um… may I have a little more time?”

“…That’s…”

Duke  Glasbel looks at me. His eyes seem to ask what I intend to do, but he doesn’t say it aloud.

“…Please don’t do anything dangerous. Promise me that.”

Duke Glasbel was careful to speak in a way that would not reveal my true identity to the enemy. Then they left me and walked out of the cell.

“To think they’d have a child pretending to be an interrogator—what a disgrace to the Glasbel name—”

“You’re very talkative. Why don’t we keep this going and you tell me everything you’re hiding, huh?”

“…Tch… Hahaha, this is a masterpiece. Did you guys hear that? This girl is going to make me talk.”

(Everyone is still unconscious, but with that attitude, I don’t need to hold back.)

I didn’t just bring my wooden sword. I also brought the ‘Demon Sword Hypnos.’

Drawing it smoothly from its sheath, the blade reflected the light from the lantern – but the man’s expression didn’t change.

“Are you planning to cut off my head? Can you even do it with that sword?”

There’s no need. I grip the hilt of Hypnos, checking how it felt, then channel magic into the sword.

“…What’s that…that sound…”

The Demon Sword Hypnos is a two-star Sacred Relic in its initial state. Unlike my wooden sword, which I can improve over time through practice and bring out their power, Hypnos’s abilities are already fully unlocked from the start, including its second power.

(That ability is… “putting the opponent into a hypnotic state with the sound emitted by the sword.”)

The second tone that Hypnos possesses can be produced without swinging the sword. It has a success rate for inducing hypnosis; the higher the opponent’s skill, the less likely it is to work—but it seems I’ve managed to succeed this time.

“You’re going to be answering our questions now. There’s nothing wrong with that. Okay?”

“…I will answer… the questions…”

I beckon the soldier holding the lantern to call Duke Glasbel and Lord Eric. Looking at the hypnotized man, I’m glad that Zephen only knew part of Hypnos’s abilities—I sincerely thought so.
