Chapter 479 – Change of Destination
The next destination for the Saint and her entourage was significantly changed.
Originally, after visiting Duke Barriella’s domain, they had planned to stop by another prominent noble’s territory nearby before proceeding to the Haragura Marquisate. However, due to considerable delays in the schedule, the Kingdom of Luwan and the Kingdom of Sart held discussions and ultimately decided that the group would head directly to the Haragura Marquisate next.
Even by taking the main road, it was a ten-day journey west—one way.
“Next is the Haragura Marquisate… huh.”
Tauro sighed and muttered inside the carriage arranged by the Kingdom of Luwan for their travels.
Riding with him were Ragune and Ankh, who are finally able to travel together on this journey.
“If things had gone according to plan, this trip would’ve been over in four days, right?”
Ankh added to Tauro’s complaint.
“The Saint’s schedule from here on is packed. Apparently, the Crown Prince’s side suggested skipping the detour because it would be rude to keep the very busy Marquis Haragura waiting for too long.”
Aeris explained, having heard it directly from Saint Matilda herself.
“Marquis Haragura, huh? The leader of the largest noble faction in the Kingdom of Sart. I’m curious, but… I’d really rather not get too involved.”
Tauro gave his honest opinion.
“His grandson gave off a bad vibe too. I just want to get there, complete the ‘Blessing Ceremony,’ and then head off on an adventure with everyone.”
Ragune agreed with Tauro.
“If Tauro-sama doesn’t want to be involved, then I don’t want to get involved either.”
Zion chimed in eagerly, loyal as ever to Tauro regardless of Ragune’s opinion.
“Ten days one way. Then the day after arriving we’ll perform the ‘Blessing Ceremony,’ and after that, we’ll stay for a few days, and then we’ll move on and say goodbye to the Saint and her party.”
Aeris summarized, counting the days in her head.
“Yeah. I had really hoped we’d go back to the capital first so I’ll be able to celebrate Haku officially becoming an adopted son… but I guess that’s not going to happen.”
Tauro looked a little disappointed that he wouldn’t get to witness his adoptive brother’s big moment.
“If that’s what you’re worried about, I have an entrance to my Dimensional Corridor set up just outside Aeris’s room in the Van Dyne Marquisate capital. From there, it’s only a few days’ journey to Count Graundewald’s domain.”
Ragune offered the reminder.
“Ah, that’s right! Then at least getting back to the Graundewald territory will be easier. The Haragura Marquisate is far, but the return trip being short makes a big difference. Thanks, Ragune!”
Tauro was once again grateful for Ragune’s abilities.
“Oh, but Tauro, don’t you still need to make an appearance in the royal capital at least once?”
Aeris asked, suddenly recalling it.
“Huh? The capital? I’ve been sending letters to the prince regularly, so I don’t have any particular reason to go in person…”
“I knew you forgot. Remember what Viscount Musai said? He’s going to recommend you for a peerage.”
“Leader, seriously!? Ouch!”
Ankh was so surprised, he stood up—only to bump his head on the carriage roof.
“Ah… yeah, but, um, it’s not a set decision, right? It’s just a recommendation. And it would only be an honorary title anyway. Still… maybe it would be best if I returned to the royal capital at least once?”
Tauro began to think it over seriously.
“An honorary noble, huh… That doesn’t come with land, right? It really is just the title. It’s still pretty impressive though.”
Ankh seemed to be knowledgeable about the details as expected and nodded in understanding.
“Really? That sounds pretty great! So, what can an honorary noble actually do?”
Ragune asked a reasonable question.
So Aeris took the opportunity to explain the meaning and privileges of honorary nobility to Ragune and to Zion, who also seemed unaware.
“──I see…so that’s how it is. That kind of authority would be very helpful for our future adventures!”
Ragune said, clearly impressed.
“As expected of Tauro-sama!”
Zion beamed proudly.
“But if I really am to become an honorary noble… it’s because of all of you. If I had been alone back then, I doubt I could’ve protected Aeris—honestly, we probably all would’ve died. It was only because Ragune, Ankh, and Zion pressured the enemy from outside that we could even fight on equal ground.”
Tauro spoke with gratitude.
“What are you saying, leader? Those two maybe, but I got injured right away and had to retreat. I wasn’t much help. It’s pathetic but honestly, that enemy was way stronger than I expected. I completely underestimated them. I don’t deserve praise—I deserve to be scolded.”
Ankh seemed genuinely bothered by it.
“If that’s how you feel, I’m in the same boat. To be honest, when I saw you get injured back then, I felt a chill run down my spine. I realized the situation was worse than I thought. If that hadn’t happened, I might have been the next to fall.”
Ragune admitted. It turned out both of them had been slightly overconfident before that battle.
Zion had fought valiantly during that battle, but since she had activated her Berserker mode, her memories of the event were vague.
So she simply listened to the two quietly.
“You two… we’re all in the same boat. We underestimated that enemy. It just goes to show how big the world really is,”
Tauro said, offering encouragement not only to them, but also to himself.
“You’re all taking this way too seriously. I believed in all of you, and I think you all lived up to that faith. You were all amazing. Sure, luck played a role—but in the end, we survived, and we even turned the tables on our enemy. That’s more than enough. Let’s take that experience and become even stronger.”
Aeris encouraged everyone and looked to the future.
“…That’s right. We, the Black-Gold Wings, are just getting started!”
Tauro added his own, bolstered by Aeris’s words.
“Yes! I’ll work even harder!”
Zion added with enthusiasm.
“…Jeez. I’m already an old man, you know? Well, guess I’ll just do what I can.”
Ankh smiled, accepting Tauro, Aeris, and Zion’s encouragement.
“…Right! I’ll continue to do my best to protect everyone!”
Ragune had found her resolve again.
“Yaaah!!” A roar of determination erupted from the carriage carrying the entire team “Black Golden Wings.”
The carriage continued on its way, heading straight for the Haragura Marquisate.
