Chapter 453: The Truth Behind the Rumors
The day after Tauro’s encounter and slight altercation with the ‘Saint’ Matilda, during his meeting with Prince Fleue, strange rumors began to circulate among both the Kingdom of Luwan’s and Sart Kingdom’s camps surrounding the ‘Saintess.’
These rumors pertained to a romantic relationship between ‘Saint’ Matilda and Prince Fleue.
Moreover, rumors started to spread within the Kingdom of Sart that Aeris was engaged to Prince Fleue.
“There have been rumors circulating from the palace about the engagement between His Highness, Prince Fleue, and the daughter of Marquis Vandyne, but now, with the ‘Saint’ involved it has become a love triangle…”
“I heard that this is why the engagement talks between Prince Fleue and Marquis Vandyne’s daughter was cancelled.”
“Come on, the rumor about the ‘Saint’ just popped up in the last few days! It seems too soon for the engagement talks between the prince and the marquis’s daughter to have been resolved because of it.”
“Well, it isn’t out of the question that the prince might have chosen the ‘Saint’ yesterday or today, which could lead to that outcome.”
“Either way, it seems to be true that the ‘Saint’ is infatuated with Prince Fleue. I heard this directly from one of the entourage on the Kingdom of Luwan’s side.”
“If that’s the case, I’m sure Marquis Van Dyne’s daughter must be feeling quite uneasy…”
The gossip suggested that both the ‘Saint’ and Aeris were vying for Prince Fleue’s affections.
“…What’s with that rumor?”
When Aeris heard the rumors about a love triangle that Zion, with her keen ears, had picked up, she was confused.
“…Ah. That might be—”
Tauro recounted the details of his meeting with ‘Saint’ Matilda a few days ago.
“…So, it’s true that I’m in a love triangle with the ‘Saint’ and Prince Fleue?”
Aeris sighed after listening to Tauro’s explanation.
“No wonder Matilda ignored my greetings… —Wait, Tauro. Maybe this means we can quit being the ‘Saint’s’ entourage!”
Aeris suggested, seizing what she saw as an opportunity.
“…That’s true. But if we mention it now, we might drag Haku into it as well, so it’s probably best to wait until we’re done with our activities in the royal capital?”
Tauro pointed out, considering the upcoming activities of the ‘Saintess’, which would involve touring the region in just a few days.
“…That’s right. Haku-kun should really make connections with the other nobles and talented individuals of this generation,”
Aeris agreed with Tauro’s reasoning.
Having spent these past few days actively mingling and greeting young people around him with Haku, even becoming friends with some of them, Tauro recognized the value in maintaining these connections.
“Now we just need to clarify that the rumor about Aeris being at the center of this nonsense is false…”
Tauro made a troubled expression at that thought.
“Then let’s counter the rumors with rumors, brother.”
Haku proposed an idea.
“Rumors?”
“Yes. If Lady Aeris denies it and we talk to the acquaintances we’ve gotten close to, person explainimg to them that it was a mistake, that would work!”
“I understand what you’re saying Haku, but do you think it will work out that well?”
Tauro expressed his doubts.
“Let’s give it a try, Tauro-sama! I’ll do my best to spread the word!”
“…What do you think, Aeris?”
With Zion pressing him, Tauro turned to Aeris for her opinion.
“I’m fine with either option, since I’m one of the subjects of the rumors. Honestly, even if I tell the truth, people might still think it’s a lie…”
Aeris, as a daughter of a noble family, has probably already experienced this kind of thing.
Her response suggested she found the idea futile.
“Let’s do what we can,”
And so, Tauro, Haku, and Zion decided to use their connections built over the last few days to spread rumors denying the love triangle.
“…Have you heard the rumors?”
“The one about the love triangle? Everyone knows about it by now.”
“No, it’s different. It seems that Prince Fleue and Lady Aeris are not even engaged.”
“What do you mean?”
“Apparently, Prince Fleue and Miss Aeris were never in that kind of relationship to begin with, so there was no engagement in the first place. In other words, it’s not a love triangle, but rather a problem between the ‘Saint’ and Prince Fleue. The prince seems to be denying that as well, though.”
“Of course, the parties involved would say that. However, talks about the love triangle and the relationship between Prince Fleue and Lady Aeris are also coming from the Kingdom of Luwan’s side, you know.”
“From the Kingdom of Luwan’s side too?”
“I mean, we can’t tell which side is telling the truth, but don’t you think it’s more suspicious that they’re trying to deny it?”
“Does that mean that the relationship between Prince Fleue and Lady Aeris is real?”
“Exactly. Which is why the ‘Saint’ has become tangled up in this mess.”
“It’s not a lie, you know?”
Tauro cut in, intervening in the gossip that was going around.
“Ah!—It’s Lord Tauro, son of Count Graundewald!”
The people who had been gossiping were surprised when Tauro abruptly joined the conversation, and they confirmed his identity.
“Lady Aeris and Prince Flue are friends, and this rumor arose from someone misunderstanding that relationship. I am one of those friends, so I can assure you that there is nothing going on between them.”
Tauro replied, then pulled a small sword adorned with the royal crest out of his magic storage to show them.
“This is a gift that proves my friendship with Prince Fleue.”
“Oh, the royal crest…!”
“This is the best evidence. As one of Prince Fleue’s friends, I am deeply troubled by these rumors. It seems there are some people on the ‘Saint’s’ side who are misunderstanding the situation, but what I just said is the truth, so please don’t believe in rumors too much.”
Tauro pressed them on this point.
“I-I understand, Lord Tauro! Please tell His Highness, ‘We believe him!’”
The gossipers seized the opportunity to appeal to him.
After all, they were speaking with someone carrying the royal crest, someone far from just a noble’s son, so their actions were understandable.
“Got it. His Highness seems quite tired of the rumors, so I’m sure he’ll appreciate those words,”
Tauro responded with a smile and then left the place.
“Tauro-sama, everyone will believe this now!”
Zion, who was following behind, called out to Tauro.
“I didn’t want to use it like this, but it concerns the honor of His Highness this time,”
Tauro replied with a wry smile and then instructed Zion to locate another group spreading rumors, so they could confront them as well.
