Chapter 400: After a Successful Wedding Reception

Tauro and his party spent many more days than planned guarding the village chief and his family to the wedding reception of the spoiled brat’s son and the village chief’s daughter.

Although his status as a mage was only in name, he seemed to be living a wealthy life as the mayor of the town, and on the day of the wedding reception, despite being hastily organised, it was held again in the gardens of the mayor’s mansion was a grand affair.

Throughout the reception, the village chief’s eyes were red with excitement at his daughter’s wedding appearance, and he was sniffling the whole time.

However, when it came time for the bride to thank her parents during the wedding reception,

“I’m really happy for you ……! Your dad is happy for you. ……!”

The village chief responded to his daughter’s words and began to cry loudly.

His wife frantically spent time trying to calm her husband, the village chief, down, but some of the young men from the village who had accompanied him as guards also began to weep in response to his tears.

It seemed that they were secretly in love with the bride.

This time, a strange moment passed as the village chief, who was supposed to have been crying, consoled and calmed the young people, but other than that, the wedding reception went without a hitch, and the sight of the bride and groom being happily together from start to finish was inspiring.

“I guess it all went off without a hitch.”

Tauro had an unexpected reaction to the wedding reception that ended without a hitch.

“Yeah? Well, Leader, there aren’t many people who would attack a celebratory event. The village chiefs aren’t the kind of people who would be targeted.”

 Ankh replied with a laugh.

“No, Ankh. Was it the puppeteer who wanted Tauro? That’s what he is talking about. But there are so many requirements to manipulate living villagers, I don’t think they can use the same method many times.”

Ragune showed off a little of her knowledge.

“Is that so?”

Ankh asked back.

“Yeah. As a puppeteer, it’s quick and easy to manipulate a doll, but unless it’s a very elaborate puppet, it’s not very strong. Also, it’s hard to carry around. But if it’s a person, as long as you can control them, they can often become quite powerful puppets.”

“What are the conditions?”

 Zion asked Ragune, seeming interested.

“In the case of a person, you have to make a contract with him or her before you can make him or her a puppet. Since you’re taking away their freedom, you have to make a contract with them under certain conditions, but you can’t make a contract without the person’s consent. So it’s very difficult, conditionally, to manipulate people as puppets.”

“But the villagers who were being controlled didn’t seem to remember anything like that, though.”

Ankh pointed out, remembering the two villagers who had been sleeping carefree after targeting Tauro.

“ the remnants were a pair, weren’t they? I’m sure one was a puppeteer and the other was someone who had made the villagers unconsciously sign a contract.”

Ragune was not so sure, but reasoned so.

“…Unconsciously… Could that be done using hypnosis or something?”

Tauro asked, using his knowledge from his previous life.

“A hypnotist! …… then it might be possible ……. ─ ─ I see, that’s right. If you’re a hypnotist, you can just  trick them into signing a contract with the puppeteer. …I see, that’s how the puppeteer was able to conveniently control the villagers.”

“Ragune-san. Why not just have the hypnotist hypnotize them and have them attack Tauro-sama?”

 Zion made a valid point.

“If you do that, the puppeteer is not strengthened and their presence would be easily detected, so there wouldn’t be much point in a surprise attack. Puppeteers can strengthen their puppets and since they can use them like objects, they can launch surprise attacks on people without being detected. –The assassin’s guild had a pool of talent.”

Ragune was impressed by the variety of talent in the Assassins Guild as she answered Zion’s question.

“Well, then, it’s possible that some of them will strike again in the same way.”

Ankh finally realized that it made more sense to attack in a crowded wedding reception hall, so he became cautious of his surroundings.

“Ha-ha-ha. It’s all right, Ankh. Anyone who doesn’t get caught by my “presence detection” is a puppet being controlled, so I made sure to be on the lookout for that this time around. Besides, I’ve already memorized the presence of those two guys, so the next time they wander around, I won’t let them get away.”

It seems that Tauro has already taken measures.

“As expected, Tauro-sama!”

 Zion praises Tauro.

“Then I wonder if the timing of the attack by that duo would be before we leave the city, or perhaps in a village on the way home, for example?”

Ankh visualized the return journey and suggested that they might blend into the crowd and attack.

“That’s true. Or it could be a pattern of controlling monsters, but I don’t think monsters can be hypnotized in the first place, so it’s not very likely, is it?”

Tauro also considered various possibilities, while being convinced by Ankh’s point.

“Either way, the distance that the puppeteer controls is short. It’s impossible to attack at a distance that wouldn’t be detected by Tauro’s ‘Presence Detection’, so they might come back more determined this time, you know?”

Ragune pointed out in an alarming manner.

“That’s right! I will also be vigilant enough so that Tauro-sama is not exposed to danger!”

Zion snorted and pumped herself up.

“zion, you’re more likely to be hypnotized by a hypnotist, so be careful.”

 Tauro laughed and joked.

 Gaaah**shock

“Lord Tauro! Do I seem that simple-minded to you?! Damn, I’ll live!”

Zion, perhaps in shock beyond belief, uttered the words that had secretly become her favorite phrase.

“Ha-ha-ha! Zion, you really have developed a strange habit of saying that!”

 Ragune was teasing Zion, but,

No, your “Damn it, kill me!” is much weirder, don’t you know?

 Tauro thought to himself.
