Chapter 460: The Duke’s Capital

Saint Matilda and her entourage arrived in the capital of Duke Bariella’s dukedom.

Surrounding the Saintess’s carriage were two Spike Wolves, a Dark Wolf, and a rock-throwing monkey, all displaying their presence.

The Saint took a liking to the young tamer and added him to her escort.

Although it was merely a whim of the Saint, for a young tamer of commoner origins, it was a chance for great advancement.

He was breathing heavily and brimming with pride.

“…hmm? Isn’t that a bit counterproductive to the image of a saint?”

Aeris pointed out the issue of having monsters roaming around the Saintess so openly.

The people of the Bariella duchy welcomed the Saintess wholeheartedly, but honestly, the presence of monsters nearby dampened the mood for them.

“Being a tamer is a rare occupation, after all. There are probably a lot of people who aren’t used to seeing monsters in the city, Aeris may be right; it might have been better to tone it down a bit,” Tauro agreed while observing the reactions of the locals.

As the welcoming began to shift toward a hesitant response, a fire broke out in one corner of the capital.

It looks like there’s a fire.

As Tauro and the others moved through the crowd of welcoming locals in their carriage, they noticed the  black smoke and immediately realized there was a fire.

“Oh my, it looks like a pretty big fire,” Tauro analyzed, looking at the volume of the black smoke rising.

At that moment, more black smoke began to rise from another location.

In rapid succession, black smoke rose from two more locations, making a total of four and generating significant alarm.

“…This doesn’t seem like just a regular fire,” Tauro stated, voicing his concern to Aeris and zion.

“It appears so… Zion, come with me; let’s go extinguish the nearest fire!”

Aeris declared as she jumped out of the slowly moving carriage.

“Okay!”

zion replied enthusiastically, following Aeris out of the carriage.

“Well then, I’ll go as well. — Ankh! Ragune! Follow me!”

Tauro shouted out to Ankh and Ragune, who had been riding in the carriage at the rear of the Saintess’s group, making sure his voice rose above the chatter of the surrounding locals.

Hearing Tauro’s voice, Ankh and Ragune leaned out of the carriage to check what Tauro wanted, and they saw him gesturing for them to join him.

The two jumped out of the carriage to catch up with Tauro.

“What’s going on, leader? Is there really something going on with that fire?”

Ankh and Ragune caught up with Tauro as he ran, pushing their way through the throngs of locals as they spoke.

“Four fires breaking out at the same time as the Saintess and her party arrives makes me think somebody’s trying to start something.”

“true. But isn’t this fire clearly a diversion? Is the target either the Saint or some other way of damaging Duke Bariella’s reputation?”

“I think so too. It looks like they planned the fires to exploit the weakened vigilance of the guards during the Saint’s welcoming parade,” Ragune added accurately.

“Everyone might come to that conclusion, so the royal guards assigned to the Saintess will go on high alert and join the duke’s territorial soldiers in guarding the Saint and her party and key locations.. In that case, we should let them handle that and focus on putting out the fires ourselves, right?”

As they talked, Aeris and zion had already arrived at the scene of the fire first and were already warning the curious bystanders to stand back.

Tauro and the others soon arrived as well.

“Okay then, I’ll put out the fire, and you three destroy the other houses so the fire doesn’t spread!”

“““Got it!”””

Once Aeris heard the trio’s reply, she began chanting her spell.

Zion kept a watchful eye around their surroundings so that nothing will disturb Aeris while she worked.

Tauro, Ankh, and Ragune scatter into the buildings surrounding the burning house.

“Come on, let it rain! ‘Great Rain Shower’!”

Aeris cast her spell, and a massive black cloud quickly spread out over the scene of the fire.

Then, one by one, raindrops began to fall from the cloud, and in the blink of an eye it turned into a downpour.

Onlookers scrambled to escape as the heavy rain lashed down, hitting the ground with such force that it would hurt if they hit you.

The intense downpour created by this suddenly manifested rain cloud began to gradually slowed down the fire, which had been burning fiercely.

In that time, Tauro and the others worked to demolish the house to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding buildings.

Thanks to his armor and shield capabilities, Tauro was able to exert great strength to break down pillars, while Ankh used his great magic sword to smash walls and columns.

Ragune pierced through beams with her magic spear and activated earth magic to tear apart the surrounding area.

In no time, the house collapsed, and thanks to the rain, the fire was put out

Once Aeris was sure the fire had died down, she lowered her ebony wand she had raised to the sky.

The locals who had been watching while sheltering from the rain under the eaves of other houses were left astonished but erupted in cheers when they saw the flames fully extinguished.

“Amazing! It’s a spell that controls the weather!”

“Could that be the ‘Saint’?”

“The ‘Saint’ has put out the fire!”

The locals misunderstood the what was happening, believing the beautiful, rain-soaked mage Aeris to be the Saintess, especially as the black rain cloud dissipated and light streamed in.

“Everyone! There are still three fires left; let’s move!”

Aeris called out to the group, ignoring the cheers from the locals.

“Make way! The Saint and her companions are heading to the other fire scenes!”

One onlooker shouted, prompting the crowd to part swiftly.

“…There’s been a misunderstanding, but now is not the time for that. Let’s hurry!”

Tauro urged, though bewildered by the situation, they all hurried on to the next scene.
