Chapter 455: The Tamer
Despite Tauro and his friends’ hopes, the day arrived for the ‘Saintess’ entourage to depart the capital and begin their tour of the Kingdom of Sart.
Prince Fleue had reportedly pleaded with the Crown Prince, who was in charge on the Sart Kingdom side, until the very last moment to have Tauro and the others removed from the group, but his request had been denied.
So Prince Fleue came up with a plan to allow Ankh and Ragune to accompany him on the journey. the Crown Prince likely didn’t expect someone who opposed his wishes to add two more people to the trip and thus was not on guard against it.
As a result, Ankh and Ragune were able to join as adventurers assigned to monitor Aeris and her group, taking up positions at the rear of the entourage.
Of course, Tauro and the others were being treated like additional baggage, traveling with the rear supply wagon for food, as their close proximity to the ’Saintess’ could easily lead to problems.
“(Going this far to bring us along shows that the Crown Prince isn’t exactly a nice person, huh?)”
Aeris whispered to Tauro In the specially made large carriage, hiding her mouth, and expressed her dismay at the way her family name was being treated.
“(…You shouldn’t say such things out loud with other people around.)”
Tauro cautioned in a low voice.
“(It’s okay. I’ve cast a small barrier around us so that no one can hear our voices except us. As long as we cover our mouths, they won’t know what we’re talking about.)”
Aeris proudly told Tauro, again while hiding her mouth.
“(When did you become able to do such amazing things? Did you learn this also from ‘True Saint’ Maria?)”
Tauro, following her example, also hid his mouth while speaking.
“Yeah, I’ve applied what I learned from Maria and created a small barrier around your face, as well as around Zion and me.”
While it was clear to Tauro that Aeris had grown significantly during their time apart, her magical abilities seemed to have improved even more than he had imagined.
Just then,
“Hey, you. You’re a tamer too, right?”
A young man sitting across from them spoke up.
“Eh? Me?”
Tauro was taken aback by the unexpected attention.
“Yeah, you. You have a tamed familiar on your belt, right? I can tell because I’m a tamer too. What kind of Mimic familiar do you have? I don’t mean to brag, but I can summon four at the moment, mostly wolf-type though .”
The young tamer was evidently excited to encounter someone else with the same rare profession as him, and seemed curious about Tauro.
“I don’t have anything impressive; I only have this one familiar tamed.”
“But you’re part of this group. That familiar is surely something extraordinary, right? Is it a mimicry-type, like a chameleon lizard? Or could it possibly be…!? Is it a high-ranking Phantom Mist type monster!?”
“Neither of those. In terms of their lineage, my familiar isn’t rare at all.”
As Tauro mentioned, by classification, taming a slime is the very basics, which was not something to brag about.
However, since the Slime Emperor type likely had no records of sightings on the surface, he couldn’t elaborate further.
Even if he were to lie, there had been sightings of mimicking slimes on the surface but they were extremely rare and ferocious.
Therefore, there are probably almost no cases of successfully taming one on the surface.
Such valuable slime can be worth money, so either way, he preferred to keep that information under wraps.
“Don’t worry about it. Although the ‘Saintess’ has a typical entourage of noble children always around her, this carriage is filled with commoners, and it seems that they are all people with excellent abilities. There are plenty of people boasting about their abilities.
The young tamer seemed proud to be one of those capable individuals.
“…I’m actually not participating as a tamer. If I had to say, it’s more about this.”
Tauro made a gesture of drawing his bow and arrow to change the subject.
“Oh! So you’re skilled with a bow, eh? I see! It’s basic for tamers to learn long-range attacks and support magic to help their familiars fight. I also use a bit of support magic. So, what kind of familiar is it?”
The young tamer didn’t let the conversation drift away and continued to ask about the real topic—the type of familiar.
“Hey, you! As a fellow tamer, you understand it’s not good to reveal your hand to someone you don’t know, right? Plus, we are adventurers, so we’re sensitive about these kind of things.”
Aeris interjected, warning the persistent young tamer.
“True, I hadn’t introduced myself yet. I’m Mahodo, a tamer. Currently, I serve as a guard under my lord, the Marquis. My prized familiars are two Spike Wolves. As a tamer, you should know well that they’re a rare breed and pretty difficult to tame. My lord acquired them at a high price from another country, so I was lucky to be able to tame them!”
With his introduction, Mahodo began to boast about his tamer abilities.
His bragging continued.
“I have two more, but they don’t compare as well. One is a Dark Wolf, and the other is a Stone-throwing Monkey. They fight as a set; usually, the Spike Wolves handle most of the enemies, but if I coordinate them, no adventurer around here will be able to go up against them.”
He made sure he said it loud enough for everyone in the carriage to hear, clearly proud.
And then, he prompted,
“Now it’s your turn.”
Tauro sighed and opened his mouth.
“As I’ve already said, I’m not a tamer, so I have no interest in bragging about my familiar. But given the atmosphere, it seems like I have to say something to avoid causing issues on the journey. I’ll introduce myself anyway. My name is Tauro Graundewald. I’m the eldest son of a count and, at the recommendation of Prince Fleue, I’ve been allowed to join this party. I’m skilled with a bow and, of course, I’m an adventurer too. These two on either side are my companions, Aeris and Zion. –Is that okay, Mahodo?”
“Y-You’re from a count’s house!? I-I apologize! I didn’t expect a noble’s son to be would be riding in our carriage …”
Because Mahodo serves a nobleman, he reacted quickly and was the first to apologize.
The people around also looked surprised and bowed their heads.
“No need to bow that much! While I am the eldest son, my brother will inherit the title, so I’m basically just a noble in name. So, I’d appreciate it if we could all get along!”
Tauro hurriedly replied, as the reactions from those around him was unexpected.
