Just another Isekai Lover~
Chapter 429: What is the enemy’s goal?
Tauro returns to his current family home, the lord’s castle, in hiding.
He had thought about disarming his magic at the doorway to reveal himself, but now he didn’t know who was watching him.
So, just to be on the safe side, I decided to just go into the castle today.
Once inside, I went back to the front of my room.
There, I finally broke the spell.
And just as I entered, a maid was cleaning the room.
“Welcome home, Master Tauro.”
“Thank you for cleaning up. I’d like to see my father now, is that okay?”
“Count-sama is probably working in his office right now… If it is an urgent matter, should I go and check his schedule now?”
The maid interrupted her cleaning to check with Tauro.
“Then, please. I’ll get change in the meantime.”
“Then I’ll help you!”
The maid tried to turn back to help Tauro get dressed.
“I—It’s fine, you just go and check on my father, please!”*
Tauro hurriedly stopped the maid.
Tauro still could not get used to the fact that the maid wanted to help him just to change his clothes.
Thirty minutes later, his father, Count Graunewald, receive a report that Tauro had returned and made some time.
“What is it, Tauro? I hear it’s urgent, did something happen to you on your trip?”
“Actually…”
Tauro gave a brief explanation of what had happened in the village they had visited on their quest and what he was asked to do there.
“…Hmm. They said it was for the sake of justice… I see. ……. I have no doubt about that. …… The truth is, when I was younger and before I inherited the title, there was a time when I was known as the prodigal son. Well, I couldn’t say that I had a good reputation among my subjects at the time.”
“Really?!”
Tauro was a bit surprised by his father’s confession of his younger years.
My father’s reputation in the city is so great that it is difficult to find anyone who criticizes him.
“Among them, there were even some who directly approached my predecessor and said they would resign if I were to inherit the title.”
“But now you have taken over the title and are governing very well.”
Tauro praised his father, Count Graunewald’s current administration.
Tauro knows from stories he has heard about his father’s efforts to develop the territory by focusing on agriculture and commerce, including a major reform of the underground water supply and sewage system.
Although there seem to have been occasional failures, there have been overwhelmingly more successes, and no one has anything bad to say about them.
“I am proud of that, too. But as I said before, there were people who were opposed to me inheriting the title. And those people were searching for the surviving children of the previous generation…”
“That’s why there are still rumors in many places about the existence of your predecessor’s children in the territory.”
Tauro understood it now.
There had been rumors to that effect, but nothing was confirmed, and I had wondered about it.
“Maybe that village is a force that doesn’t like me. And that’s where your adoption came in. I think they’re trying to make something happen at the party.”
My father, Count Graunewald, pondered.
“…What should we do? I was thinking that I could leak information to confirm their purpose, and depending on the content, come up with a countermeasure and prevent it from happening before the day comes…”
“Yes, ……. If you can find out their purpose, then the deadline is a week from there. If there is such a force, there could be someone on the inside, though. ……”
“Then Isn’t it highly unlikely that they would use us to find out?”
“I hope that’s the case… Even those who were in opposition in the past have been forgiven and some have returned to their vassals.”
“I think it would be a good idea to keep some of the information about that day under wraps.”
“I agree. I’ll have someone I can trust convey that right away. By the way, Tauro, how’s your trip around the territory going?”
His father, Count Graunewald, wanted to hear his adopted son’s thoughts.
“Yes, I have not seen anyone starving in the towns and villages we have toured, and I thought that most of them had a stable life. Of course, there are some poor people too. But compared to other aristocratic territories, I felt that the situation here was quite fortunate.”
Tauro gave his honest opinion.
“Well ……. If you says so, then it must be true. Hahaha! ─ ─ When you’ve been a lord for so long, you sometimes lose the footing you’re standing on and wonder if what you’re doing is right. Thanks to you, I have that confirmation.”
Count Graunewald, nodded and patted Tauro on the head.
Then he continued.
“Your introduction party on that day will be attended not only by the subjects and influential people in the territory, but also by the nobles of neighboring territories. We can’t allow any problems to occur there. It may seem strange to leave it to you, the star of the day, but… I’m counting on you.”
“Yes, I’ll find out what they want, and we’ll figure it out before the day comes.”
With that, Tauro left the office.
“…An opposing force, huh? I’ve had my people check on them before just in case, but some of them haven’t been heard from. As Tauro reported, we should be on guard if someone is making a move…”
Count Graunewald had a serious expression on his face and was deep in thought.
Tauro returned to his room, changed back into his adventurer guise, and left the castle, hiding himself with magic.
“Even someone as honorable as my father has opposing forces ……. But even to go against him, they’ll need a flag. The obvious answer would be Haku, but… If Haku was the previous count’s surviving child, he would have purple hair and blue eyes. Haku has black hair and black eyes, so that doesn’t seem to fit. …… If that’s not it, then what is their goal…? Are they trying to assassinate me, his adopted son, in front of a crowd, or are they targeting my father directly…”
Tauro considered various possibilities, but decided that there might be no other way than to hand over the information and find out, so he reserved any judgement for the time being.
