Chapter 421: Meeting the Boy

The village that Tauro and his party visited was just as the guild had described it, a normal village with no particular features.

Tauro and his group had visited this village before on a quest to transport farm produce, but the impression they had at that time of it was also “ordinary” and did not leave much of an impression.

The chief of this ordinary village, Maine Village, was also an ordinary middle-aged man.

“Welcome to our village!  Ever since I saw you the other day while making a deal with Garde, I knew you were no ordinary person! Hahaha! Please spend the next week or so teaching our people a lot of things about how to fight.”

The village chief bowed as he greeted them on the villagers behalf.

Behind the village chief, all the villagers were gathered, including children.

Apparently, he wanted us to teach not only adults but also children, which showed how serious he was.

At first I was skeptical about how serious they were, but the villagers’ eyes were serious, too.

Tauro was curious as to what was driving the villagers to such an extent, so he decided to ask the village chief directly.

“By the way, why did you want to learn how to fight? Normally, wouldn’t you invite craftsmen to learn their skills? Couldn’t you have sent some of your best villagers elsewhere to learn a trade? ……”

“The reason is simple. Looking at you all, I thought that first and foremost, you need to be strong enough to protect yourself and your family. I don’t mean for it to sound like an insult, but you have two children who are active as adventurers. We were inspired by that reality.”

The village head looked at Tauro and Zion and thought that there might be something they could do to help.

Of course, it was not that simple.

And with a short deadline of only one week.

The village chief’s idea was admirable, but given the short learning period, I couldn’t help but think he was being too optimistic.

Tauro therefore decided to teach them the basics for a full week.

The adults were left to Ragune and Ankh, while Tauro and Zion were in charge of the children.

After teaching them for several days, I could tell how serious they were.

Do they feel that the current situation in the village is so critical?

Everyone is so pumped that they spend all their free time participating in this training while also working on the farm from morning to night.

I thought the children would get bored of it quickly, but that didn’t seem to be the case; they spared no time to play and were swinging their wooden swords, perhaps sensing how serious the adults were.

After a few days like that, a new kid I didn’t know appeared among our group.

“There are more children, right?”

Tauro tilted his head as the line of children swinging their wooden swords in earnest grew.

“Yesterday there was one. Today there are three more.”

 Zion told him.

Perhaps those who were not on the schedule were inspired to join?

That’s what Tauro thought, but he noticed that the adults accompanying them were not local villagers.

He was not aware of the children, but as for the adults, he was aware of the villagers of Maine village through “presence detection.”

“Are you from another village, by any chance?”

As Tauro was teaching the children, he spoke the question out loud, and one of the children answered it.

“The kids from the neighboring village are here too!”

“I knew it!”

It seems that Tauro’s prediction was correct.

“…I’m sorry. Actually, I heard about it and brought my children along so that they could participate.”

The adult who had come with him apologized to Tauro and told him so, then continued.

“Of course, I’ll pay for it.”

They may have been inspired by Maine Village’s actions, but what are they all aiming for?

Or so Tauro thought, but the children who joined in midway were surprisingly better at wielding wooden swords than the children he had been teaching from the beginning.

It seemed that someone had originally taught them.

Among them, a dark-haired boy about the same age as Tauro seemed to have a solid foundation and good muscle.

Occasionally, he would make gestures other than the basics, perhaps with Tauro in mind.

Perhaps he felt a competitive spirit towards Tauro because they were close in age.

Tauro was impressed by this competitive spirit and decided to have a practice match with one outstanding boy during a short break.

“Hey kid over there, do you want to have a go with me?”

“Of course! I wanted to see how strong the adventurers were!”

 The boy is very motivated.

 And…

 Tauro knocked the boy down.

The boy must have realized just how big the gap in ability between him and Tauro was.

“I give up… What can I do to become as strong as you, sensei?”

He showed his respect for Tauro as a teacher.

The boy introduced himself as Haku.

He had learned swordsmanship from his father in the neighboring village, but when the father was seriously injured while defeating a monster that attacked the village, he was no longer able to learn directly, and so from then on he only practiced.

“…… No wonder the children and adults who joined us along the way can wield swords.”

Tauro is impressed and asks what his father, who had been teaching everyone up until then, is doing now, and learns that he is doing craftsmanship.

“Did your father perhaps previously serve some noble or something?”

Tauro was impressed that the boy seemed to have good manners and assumed that his parents must have given him a good upbringing.

“I don’t know much about it myself. My father doesn’t like to talk about such things. But he said he was injured and ended up in the village we live in now.”

“So he was already injured and got injured again while fighting a monster …… That must have been tough.”

Tauro felt a little regretful that he had asked too much.

“My father is a great man. He still teaches me how to study, and the other villagers also respect him. They treat me with respect because I’m his son.”

Haku answered Tauro’s questions without a hint of disdain.

 Maybe it’s someone famous.

Tauro was interested in this father and his son, Haku.

Besides, he was also interested in the way the adults who had accompanied Haku were watching him.

They looked like knights guarding something.

Tauro became interested in the neighboring village itself, thinking that there might be something there.
