Chapter 479: Repairing the Holy Sword
There was no one left in the weapons workshop. The furnace was still lit. It looked like they had just been driven out a moment ago.
I feel bad. We could’ve waited until their work in the workshop was done.
Feeling a little guilty, I checked the materials that had been prepared on the table. Both the Gravide crystal and the blue silver seemed to be of satisfactory quality.
I picked up the Holy Sword that had been moved to this room. It was heavy—far heavier than anything I ever felt in the game.
“I think it’s going to take some time to repair. I’ll come get you when it’s done, so feel free to do something else in the meantime. Also… being watched the whole time is kind of… unsettling.”
“Got it. Then we’ll have tea in the room nearby.”
“Sophia-sama, could you guide us there?”
“Y-Yes, of course.”
Sophia-sama kept glancing over at me. She seemed quite curious. I believe Alex-niisan and Sister-in-law Daniela understand me to some extent, but Sophia-sama is different.
Right now, Sophia-sama probably sees me as “a kid who can make potions.” She likely has no idea that I make magic tools or daily necessities. It’s understandable that she’s concerned.
“It’s all right, Sophia-sama. I make magic tools for the Heine Trading Company, after all. I’m quite handy with a hammer.”
“I-I see…”
She still looked unconvinced, but went outside with Sister-in-law Daniela. The only ones left in the room were the researchers. Of course, Nero and Lionel were supposed to be waiting just outside.
I wish I could’ve brought them in too, but the Holy Sword is a secret. Even if I want to call them in, I can’t. I’m sure Alex-niisan will explain things smoothly, but I still feel kind of bad.
No, no. I need to focus and get started. The researchers looked idle, so I decided to put them to work. If they get to say they helped repair the Holy Sword, it’ll be good for their careers. And it’ll also improve their opinion of me. The more allies, the better.
“I’d like to powder this Gravide crystal. Could you help me with that?”
“Gladly!”
“Just say the word!”
Hmm. Their loyalty already seems high. I can entrust the work to them with confidence.
From what I’ve heard, they all know at least basic magic. That’s lucky. I’ll have them use fire magic to help reforge the Holy Sword.
First, I made a rough mold for the Holy Sword and placed the broken blade inside, making sure the fragments fit perfectly. In that state, I had the researchers use fire magic from both sides, focusing on the broken area. At the same time, I gripped the hilt and infused the sword with magical power.
After a while, change finally came. The broken parts started to fuse together. The researchers let out small cheers. They probably wanted to make more noise, but I could tell they were holding it in. I heard high-fives behind me. A bit distracting.
From there, we moved on to forging with the anvil. I had them stop using fire magic on the blade and instead use it to melt the blue silver.
While the researchers melted the blue silver, I hammered the sword.
Infusing the sword with magical power while repeatedly heating it with fire magic, I reshaped it by hammering it into its original form. With my “Craft” skill, it was a breeze. I’m glad I have it—seriously.
After shaping came polishing. I used the best whetstone in the workshop. It seemed to be a diamond whetstone, and I managed to get the job done. As expected of orichalcum—so tough. Normally, it would require a specialized whetstone, so I’m glad it worked out.
I was thinking I might have to use my “Laboratory” skill for the finishing touches, but with this, I won’t have to.
With the sword’s shape restored, the next step was rewriting the spell formula. I mixed powdered Gravide crystal into the melted blue silver. While I did that, the researchers examined the restored Holy Sword and heaped praise on it.
While channeling magic into the mixture, I stirred it. Before long, it became a thick, black ink. Once the researchers calmed down, we began rewriting the spell formula. Naturally, I had their help too.
They traced the faded parts, while I rewrote the missing sections. Everyone worked in silence.
This special ink for magical formulas was incredibly difficult to use and didn’t spread well. Because of that, the rewriting took quite a while.
But somehow, we managed to finish it the same day.
“That completes the repair.”
“Julius-sama, I don’t mean to doubt you, but… was it really restored to its original state?”
“It certainly looks just like it did before… no, it might even be more beautiful than before…”
The researchers still seemed half in doubt. I get it. The Holy Sword they had pulled out last time apparently couldn’t deal a decisive blow to the Bone Dragon. If it fails again, their heads might roll. That’d be bad.
“Well then, why don’t we give it a quick test?”
“Eh?”
I turned the thin ring at the base of the hilt. This served as the safety lock for using the Holy Sword. Without it, the weapon would be far too dangerous to carry around. If you were to walk through town while radiating holy light that erases evil, it’d be a huge nuisance.
Light began to burst from the Holy Sword. The black veins turned golden, and its glow intensified. As I poured in magical power, the light grew brighter and stronger in response.
“Th-this is its true power!”
“Incredible! What a pleasant light this is!”
“Oooooh… oh divine one…”
“That’s not what this is.”
Swoosh—the light disappeared. Of course, I’d just turned the ring back to re-engage the safety lock.
The researchers were left stunned. One of them had literally been about to kneel and offer a prayer to me. That was close.
