Chapter 426: Double Date
The next day, as planned, I headed out on a date with Fabienne under the pretense of sightseeing in the domain capital. It was supposed to be a date with just the two of us, but for some reason, Carol and Axel were there as well. Both of them were dressed in the same kind of undercover style as us.
“Um, what is this…?”
“Haha…”
Axel gave an apologetic laugh. I couldn’t help but smile wryly as well. There’s no doubt the lady told them to come along. That’s fine, I suppose, but I don’t think we needed to share the same carriage… As a result, it turned into a double date.
“Kyu!”
“That’s right, Mira’s here too.”
Mira raised her hand, trying to make sure we knew she was part of this too. I’d dressed her in a way that hid the wings on her back, and put a hood over her head to keep her horns from standing out. Apparently, dressing pets in clothes isn’t a common practice here, but once I made some clothes for Mira, everyone became incredibly interested.
I really hope this doesn’t start a trend of dressing pets in clothes… Right? It’ll be fine, right?
“You look so cute, Mira-chan.”
“Kyu!”
Mira seemed pleased with Fabienne’s compliment and was bouncing happily on her lap. Fabienne also looked happy as she stroked Mira gently.
“Is it okay though? I’m worried Mira-chan might be getting too hot.”
Even as she voiced her concern, Carol was already petting Mira. At this point, Mira had completely become an adorable, comforting pet. There was no trace left of her former majestic holy dragon image. She didn’t seem to mind either, so maybe this is fine.
“No need to worry. I’ve been feeding Mira cold cookies.”
“Cold cookies?”
Come to think of it, I hadn’t mentioned them before. At the House of Count Heine, they’ve basically become a staple remedy, so I forgot to explain. When I brought it up, everyone wanted to try them for themselves.
“They look like regular cookies… and they taste like cookies too.”
“Yeah. They’re cookies. Really high-quality cookies. I think Isidore would love them.”
“They’re not just sweets, though. They’re magic medicine.”
“That’s hard to believe.”
“I agree, it’s unbelievable.”
It wasn’t that hot yet, so maybe the effect wasn’t noticeable, but once the sun rises higher, I’m sure they’ll understand.
The carriage carrying us moved toward the center of the domain capital. Nero was on the coachman’s seat. It seemed he had done some research on sightseeing spots the day before and was brimming with enthusiasm from the morning.
First, we all decided to go up the clock tower. From what they said yesterday, Carol and Axel had only been to the base of the tower before. I also really wanted Fabienne to see that magnificent view from the top of the clock tower.
“This is amazing. It’s forest as far as the eye can see.”
“So this is what you can see from up here. And wow, that bell is huge up close.”
“It’s been a while since I came all the way up here, but I’m relieved to see the view hasn’t changed.”
We all enjoyed the scenery from the top floor. Perhaps she was a bit scared—Fabienne’s hand, which was holding mine, was trembling slightly. When we ride Mira, the height is only around the level of a three-story building at most. It’s understandable that she’d be scared.
“Julius-sama seems to be curious about that direction.”
“N-No, that’s not true at all.”
Fabienne seemed to have noticed where I was looking. She squinted in that direction, as if trying to see what I saw. But she shouldn’t be able to see anything unusual—unless she had a skill like Clairvoyance or something.
“That way is the same forest as over here. Since it’s the eastern frontier, the forest should stretch on for a long time. …Come to think of it, isn’t that the direction the investigation team went?”
Everyone turned their gaze in the same direction. That was the direction I made it rain yesterday. I believe the margrave’s forces in the eastern frontier have already dealt with the issue, but just to be sure, I was checking whether there were any other conspicuous monsters. Yeah, none in sight. It should be fine now.
“Could it be that Julius sees something?”
“No, I don’t see anything. I think the investigation is probably over by now, and it should be safe.”
“Yes, I hope things return to normal soon…”
She must be worried—this is her family’s domain, after all. Marquis and Marchioness Mulan didn’t talk about it much, perhaps so we wouldn’t worry. Once there’s news from the eastern frontier, I wonder if they’ll tell us about it too.
After the clock tower, we headed to the fountain plaza, located near the center of the capital. It’s a place anyone can freely visit and is said to be the most famous sightseeing spot in the capital. Even now, it was bustling with people, and some distance away, food stalls were lined up. Probably to avoid spoiling the scenery of the tourist spot.
“That’s a big fountain. It’s the first time I’ve seen one this large.”
“The water pressure is amazing. Are they using some kind of magic tool?”
“Probably, yeah. If they were managing it purely with magic, it’d be a huge hassle.”
Like a water-based performance, the water changed into various shapes. The central fountain constantly sprayed upward, and from the urn carried by the goddess statue, water flowed endlessly like a waterfall. I wonder just how much water they’re using.
“I heard the magic tool used in this fountain was made by the most skilled magic tool artisan in the capital. It seems they’ve already passed away, but their workshop still remains.”
“Wait, could that be the magic tool workshop we visited yesterday…?”
The workshop we visited yesterday was large and had many craftsmen. But rather than developing new items, they seemed to be focused on producing popular, existing products.
I should’ve looked around more carefully. Maybe there were some people working on new magic tools too.
“What did you think? Were they all skilled magic tool artisans?”
“Well… I was so focused on making my own magic tool that I didn’t really pay attention.”
“Hehe, that’s just like you, Julius.”
When Carol said that, everyone laughed. Yeah, that does sound like me. I guess I’m the type who gets so focused that I lose sight of my surroundings. I really should pay more attention to what’s going on around me. Otherwise, I might miss out on valuable chances to grow.
