Chapter 370: Coating Agent
As soon as I returned from the training ground, I headed straight to the workshop. Of course, this was to have the mages make the reinforced glass.
Just like in the morning, I had them heat the glass and cool it using wind magic.
“Is it really this easy to make reinforced glass?”
“Yep. Surprised it’s so simple? But there’s a trick to heating the glass just right. If you’re not careful, it’ll melt. Also, if the glass doesn’t get hot enough, it won’t work.”
“I see.”
The finished reinforced glass was about as hard as the one Rosalia had made. It seemed that using normal wind magic resulted in this level of hardness. In other words, unless we could further infuse magic into it, we wouldn’t be able to make much stronger reinforced glass.
“Well then, take this reinforced glass back with you and check its hardness. I want Lionel to report the results to Father based on what you find.”
“Understood.”
With that, the mages returned. I don’t think there will be any issues with this. It’s the same hardness as the first reinforced glass we tested. It should break easily with a one-handed hammer strike.
Once the mages left, I headed for the salon. There, Fabienne and Rosalia were already enjoying some tea, with Nero and Lelie serving them. Both of them have become fine servants. Quite impressive.
“How did it go?”
“There were no issues. The reinforced glass we made is about the same as the first one we tested.”
“I see. How do you infuse more magic into it?”
Fabienne hadn’t mentioned it before, but it seems she was curious about it too. Of course, Rosalia was as well. Both of them were staring at me intently. I guess I’ll have to be honest here.
“Well, the truth is, I don’t really know. I can only say that ‘when I try to use magic to infuse more power, that’s what happens.'”
I wish I could teach them how to do it. But that’s just how it is. I don’t know if this is my talent, or if anyone could do it with enough training.
I gently patted Rosalia’s head, who had slumped her shoulders in disappointment. Even I have things I can’t do or understand. On the other hand, Fabienne looked less disappointed and more… relieved.
If I could infuse more magic into a spell, I could probably make a Fireball much larger. She’s probably aware of this potential. And it seems she recognizes that it could be dangerous.
That’s exactly right. If you have enough magic, even a beginner spell could produce an overwhelming amount of firepower. That could lead to much greater destruction in battle.
I patted Fabienne’s head too. She looked pleased.
“Now, as for what we’ll do next, I’ve got something I want to make, so I plan to head to the alchemy room. What about you, Fabienne?”
“Of course, I’ll go with you.”
Rosalia seemed to have study time ahead of her. She didn’t seem particularly unhappy, since she would be studying with Lelie. This is thanks to Lelie. Rosalia also seemed to enjoy writing with pencils and would draw on paper whenever she had free time. Maybe becoming a painter in the future wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
I left the two of them and Mira in the salon and headed to the alchemy room. It would probably take a little more time for Lionel to report to Father. I think Father will likely summon me after dinner. Until then, I’ll work on creating a magical potion to coat the reinforced glass.
“Julius-sama, what are you going to make?”
“A coating agent. By applying this to the reinforced glass, we’ll improve its magic resistance.”
“Is that really okay?”
“If it stays weak against fire, it could cause problems. But I think it should be fine.”
She seemed to agree with that reasoning, nodding deeply.
Upon arriving at the alchemy room, I immediately began preparing. The necessary materials were Black Slime mucus, green neutralizer, poison-removal grass, and obsidian powder.
Black Slime is a special type of slime with high magic resistance. The mucus it secretes also has high magic resistance. However, since Black Slime is a rather rare slime, it might be difficult to gather a large amount of material.
“Everything seems to be black in color.”
“Yeah, the appearance is definitely that way. But once we add the green neutralizer, the color will almost become colorless. Also, since we’ll be applying it thinly, the appearance of the glass won’t change much.”
Fabienne nodded as we started making the potion. Since metal cauldrons corrode, we used a clay pot for the task. Fabienne seemed surprised when she saw the clay pot, which had appeared from somewhere.
“I didn’t know this existed.”
“Huh? Haven’t you seen it before? I think we use it in cooking quite a bit.”
“I’ve seen it in the kitchen, but I never expected it to be used for making magical potions.”
I see. That was probably why she was surprised. If someone were using cooking utensils for this, they might wonder what was going on. However, alchemists use whatever tools are available. If using something improves the quality of the potion and its effectiveness, we don’t hesitate to use it.
When I explained this, Fabienne nodded solemnly.
“Now, let’s start by making the green neutralizer. We’ll use the usual single-handed pot for this. The ingredients are medicinal herbs and spinach.”
“Isn’t this… food?”
“Yep. We used food ingredients when making hot cookies too, remember?”
“True… but that was…”
She mumbled something to herself, but I continued with the task. An alchemist uses whatever can be useful—that’s just how it is.
