Chapter 90: World War — Outbreak
“Odin-sama, preparations are complete.”
“…I see.”
At Lielbelt’s report, Odin stood up.
It had been almost a month since the world war was declared, and the preparations of the World Union were finally complete.
And the same went for Odin Asgard.
And for Lord Asgard as well.
The leading actors in this battle for world domination were about to take the stage, heading into a war on a scale humanity had never before experienced, where everyone on Earth would be involved.
“A younger brother who surpasses his older brother, huh…”
“No, Odin-sama, you are the one who should be the ruler of this world — more so than Lord.”
“That guy is a genius. He’s not the same as me. But that’s exactly why…”
Odin cut through Lielbelt’s words, offering rare praise for his enemy, Lord.
Of all people, Odin was the one who most acknowledged the special talent of Lord — and yet…
“He’s not the kind of man who should stand at the top. He’s a player, not a leader.”
…
“Kenya, I’m coming in — what are you two doing?”
When Lord entered the hospital room, there was Reina, dressed in a half-undone nurse outfit, straddling Kenya.
“T-This isn’t what it looks like! Reina just— forced me!”
“With a life-or-death battle ahead, I thought at least… you might hold me. What do you think? Are you excited?”
“Where did you leave your shame!? No, stop! Why are you so set on making me break my promise to Kaguya?!”
“I left my shame at my mother’s grave that day. And I don’t want to lose to Kaguya. But… I guess it can’t be helped. I’ll let you off for today.”
“Haa… day after day, this feels more like torture than recovery.”
Watching his knight flirt away, Lord let out a deep sigh.
Reina fixed her clothes, sat down beside Kenya, and turned to listen to Lord.
“Looks like you’ve recovered enough.”
“Yeah, I think I could be discharged already — but Reina won’t give me permission.”
“Please stay in the hospital a little longer.”
(I’m still in the middle of training with Osiris, after all.)
Reina, who wanted to surprise Kenya, was spending every day in a life-or-death training regime with Osiris.
For her, this moment was the only time of happiness in each day.
With her resolve set, she absorbed every ounce of technique Osiris had to offer.
Originally a bundle of talent, Reina’s abilities began to bloom under the harsh training of the former strongest warrior.
At this point, her strength had already reached the level of a Holy Knight Commander.
(Yesterday, I finally managed to win once against Jin-san too. I can still become even stronger.)
As if embodying the very idea that people can change just by wishing to become stronger.
“So, Lord, what’s the plan?”
“Ah, Kenya. I actually have a request for you. For this operation, I want you to handle the final step. The one who will deliver the finishing blow.”
Lord placed his hand on Kenya’s shoulder, locking eyes with him to convey his thoughts.
“I want it to be you.”
“…Are you sure?”
“Yeah. I’ll clear the path. I’ll prepare the stage, too. That’s why, Kenya, I want you to end it. My brother.”
In Lord’s eyes, there was a trace of sorrow.
No matter what kind of person his brother was, to Lord, he was still family — and that meant feelings couldn’t be so easily erased.
Kenya understood that. And yet, he accepted the weight of that responsibility.
“…Leave it to me. I am your sword.”
“Yeah.”
…
At the headquarters of the Asian Union and World Union — Central Nakatake, Capital Kamui.
“Well then, Odin-dono. Could you give the declaration? After all, you’re the one holding the banner of this war.”
Standing before an enormous army, Genbu, Camille, and Odin prepared to declare the start of battle.
Asgard-built units, EU-built units, Asian Union-built units.
All of them had distinct designs, but for this day, every last one had been painted white.
A contrast to Asgard’s signature black KOGs.
And now, standing atop the stage and gazing down at the army of over 100,000 pure-white mechs, Odin began to speak.
“Before me now stands the combined power of the world…”
The beginning was quiet, yet the words echoed across the globe.
“These machines, these weapons of war — the KOG. That name was given by my father, Orgol Asgard, when he first became Emperor. Once, we fought with wooden sticks. Then came swords, bows, guns. We have fought and fought — that is human history. Battle is the essence of human history. No one can deny this truth. And yet, through those battles, humanity has undoubtedly progressed.”
When Orgol Asgard ascended as Emperor, the “Knight of the Giant” was born, named as such because it looked like a giant knight.
“And what we have now is the KOG that you all pilot. The highest point of human technology, the crystallization of wisdom. Why did we reach this? Why did we advance from wooden sticks to here? It’s simple. Because we haven’t changed. From the time we wandered the world half-naked, nothing about us has changed. The thing lying deep within our hearts is this—”
He paused for a breath, giving the soldiers time to consider.
And then Odin gave them the answer.
“It’s the instinct to not die. War advances the world’s technology. At a speed that peace could never match, at a pace that forces the limits of human potential. Why? Because we don’t want to die. We don’t want to die, we don’t want to be killed, and so we kill. That is the strongest emotion we humans possess.”
Odin’s voice grew stronger, emphasizing that desire to live.
“We fight — why? Because we don’t want to die! We fight — why? Because we want to live free! And for that, we’ll set aside race, culture, and old grudges, and join hands! Humanity can move forward! That is why — now — all of you, Asgardians, Asians, Westerners, stand side by side! Therefore—”
Odin raised his fist.
“Let us achieve victory. And let us pray that this will be humanity’s final war. I hereby order all soldiers — activate all KOGs!!”
At his shout, every KOG waiting on standby activated and lifted into the sky.
Over one hundred thousand KOGs bared their fangs toward the heart of the Asgards Empire.
“Our target is the imperial capital, Valhalla! Our ultimate objective is—”
The single goal for the entire world:
“Lord Asgard! And him alone!”
…
The First World War had begun.
The scale of the battlefield was unprecedented — even counting them, there were over 20 major fronts.
The lands of Asgard were vast.
And so, this was no mere skirmish or single battle — this was total war, where battlefields would spring up in countless places, true to the very definition of the word.
However, Asgard had no shortage of brilliant commanders.
“The enemy’s coming! Give them a proper welcome, boys!!”
“Understood, Org! A rain of bullets will be their welcome drink!”
“Exactly! Fill their bellies with lead! All units, ready!”
One of the Three Heroes, Org Obelisk — a fierce general who had survived countless real wars. His battles always came at a heavy cost of lives.
But the enemy always lost twice as many.
And another figure—
“You’ve been briefed on the operation. Unlike Lord-sama, I’ll need you to adjust as necessary. Understood?”
“For Lamia-sama, I’d gladly give my life! Use me as a pawn as you see fit!”
“You’re quite the capable pawn. Don’t worry — I’ll make sure your death will have meaning.”
“It’s an honor, ma’am!”
A woman who stood at the pinnacle of both strategy and tactics — Lamia Sylvana, 30 years old, no lover.
“Sieg-senpai, I’ll avenge you. Tell me, how many of their corpses will it take for you to smile as you pass on?”
A junior who had loved Sieg now stood at the helm of the battlefield.
Now, with only two of the Three Heroes remaining, the battlefields were overrun by Asgard’s forces.
Even though the World Union held the advantage in sheer numbers, when it came to the quality of their people, Asgard had already won.
And the last of the trio—
In the Asgard Imperial Capital, Valhalla, in the Supreme Command Room, Lord sat alone.
In front of him, more than ten monitors displayed the battlefields.
“Omega Squad from Battlefield B, move to Area A-23. Alpha Squad from Battlefield E, hold position. Engage as soon as you spot the enemy approaching from the right. Bravo Squad on Battlefield C, advance to Area C-2. There is an ambush there — hit them with Beta Squad… And next…”
Every battlefield not assigned to his elite commanders like Org and Lamia was displayed on his screens.
He preferred to focus, so he worked alone.
From that room, he gave orders to all his commanders via radio.
“Just relaying orders is overwhelming enough… and yet, you manage it so easily, Lord-sama.”
With his mind, he kept track of the ever-shifting chaos of battle — as if a master chess player were handling multiple boards at once.
The World Union’s forces fell one after another. Not once did Lord lose a battle under his command.
“Battlefield B — secured. Moving on to Battlefield C — minimal losses, overwhelming victory!”
And so the World Union remembered.
They remembered the power of the supreme commander who had once brought the EU to the brink of destruction.
The devilish mind no one could defeat in a contest of battlefield wit.
“Brother… if you don’t show yourself soon, I’ll wipe out the entire World Union. Though I suppose that’s exactly what you’re aiming for.”
Lord, who held the world in the palm of his hand, could see every battlefield clearly.
This deadlock continued for nearly a week.
Throughout, it appeared as though Asgard had the upper hand, yet the sheer difference in strength kept the war balanced — the front lines unmoved.
No — to be precise:
“This should freeze the battlefield for good. I’ve secured every major stronghold.”
Just as LORD intended, the war gradually settled into a stalemate.
“Well then, the stage is set. All that’s left is the final preparation.”
…
“Well, I’m off, Tanaka-san.”
“…Good luck, Kenya. I always seem to be saying the same thing, huh?”
“Kenya, please don’t push yourself. Once Aphrodite’s repairs are done… just a few more days… I’m sorry.”
“Well, I mean, I’m the one who smashed it up, so…”
(Though it’s a secret that I asked Lord to delay the repairs.)
If this could bring the war to an end, Kenya wanted to keep both Reina and Kaguya away from danger, no matter what.
So even knowing Reina would probably be furious if she found out, he had begged Lord to hold off on her machine’s repairs.
When she tried to insist on joining in a standard unit, he forced her to accept that she’d only be a liability.
“It’s okay. I’ll finish this. And once I do… Reina, let’s pick up where we left off.”
“You’d better, promise me. At least this much is allowed, right? Mmm…”
Reina tilted her face up, offering her lips to Kenya.
Kenya met her kiss, figuring Kaguya would forgive at least this much.
Then he climbed into the Takemikazuchi.
“Lord, can you hear me?”
“Yeah. The stage is set.”
“Then I’m going. I’ll end this.”
“…I’m counting on you. My brother — Odin.”
Speaking in a steady, emotionless tone, Lord delivered the one, final order.
“Kill him.”
