Chapter 79: Father and Son

“Can you hear me, Kenya?”

“Yes!”

They were flying over the ocean.

From Asgard to Japan, it would normally take half a day by airship.
But in Takemikazuchi, the machine modified by Tanaka, it would only take two or three hours.

Its speed surpassed the sound barrier.

Takemikazuchi’s flight form resembled a spear in flight.
Using its dual swords as shields in this aerodynamic configuration allowed for long-range supersonic travel.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have much energy left. Factoring in the return trip, you’ll only have one to two hours of operational time there. Finish things within that window and come back.”

“…Understood.”

“And don’t use the open comms. If they realize you’re Japanese, it could cause problems. You understand?”

“…Acknowledged.”

Since the Imperial Sword Martial Festival, Takemikazuchi had not received any resupply.

Flying at maximum speed and output consumed an immense amount of energy.

The fact that it could still operate at full throttle for nearly half a day was thanks to Tanaka’s research.

“Kenya-kun, maybe I shouldn’t be saying this, but…”

“What is it?”

“I’m Japanese. I want Asgard to lose. But still—I want Sieg-san and Reina-kun to live. Please save them.”

Tanaka’s plea was contradictory.

His goal as a member of the resistance was solely to reclaim Japan.

That meant he should be wishing for the defeat of the War God—and of Reina.

But emotionally, he couldn’t do it.

“…Tanaka-san… it’s okay. I will save them.”

“…I’m counting on you.”

Kenya increased his speed even further. In the distance, land came into view.

That land was the former Tokyo—now a battlefield.

Kenya headed straight for where Kaguya and Reina were fighting.

“That machine is… Reina!”

Kenya arrived at the battlefield, scanning for Reina’s identification signal.

He spotted her—Reina’s unit cradling the general’s unit in her arms.

And then—an azure unit closing in to pierce through Reina’s machine.

The instant he saw that scene, lightning struck.

“GET OUT OF THE WAAAAAY!!”

A white lightning bolt shot straight through, blasting aside the KOGs in its path and knocking away Byakuren’s spear.

“!? …What the!?”

Dust exploded across the battlefield as Byakuren squinted to make sense of what just happened.

He didn’t know what it was—but something had knocked his spear away.

And then, as the dust cleared, a white giant emerged.

“That’s… I’ve seen that footage… The Lord’s Knight! Sword Sylphid!?”

The moment Byakuren saw the white KOG, he understood.

This was the machine that had defeated Osiris in that recording.

He retrieved his fallen spear and readied it again.

“To defeat Osiris… that makes you a worthy opponent!”

Inside his cockpit, Kenya spoke quietly as he looked toward him.

“…So it was you.”

Kenya’s eyes were locked on Sieg’s machine.

From Reina’s condition and the decorations on the unit, it was obvious Sieg was inside.

But the unit didn’t move. When Kenya saw the deeply embedded spear, he understood.

He slowly readied his swords.

Gripping the controls tighter, fully aware of the battle to come, he let out a wave of killing intent.

“!!!!????”

Byakuren, Thor, and Kaguya—every one of them had alarms screaming in their heads.

All three instantly pulled back, drenched in sweat, their faces pale and breathing heavy.

They retreated as far as possible—far beyond Kenya’s attack range.

The pressure felt like their hearts were being crushed. Their instincts screamed danger.

“All 13 Asian Gods! Gather immediately!!”

“Raijin Squad, regroup on me!!”

Byakuren called for all of Asia’s elite forces.

Thor summoned his entire unit—the EU’s finest.

Even so, the chill wouldn’t stop. The cold sweat kept coming.

Just looking at that white machine filled them with a vivid image of death.

“What the hell is this!? Byakuren, what is this thing!?”

Thor shouted.

“…That’s Sword Sylphid. The machine of the man who defeated Osiris and became the Empire’s strongest knight.”

“I know that! I’m asking what the hell is this pressure!?”

“…I used to think Osiris had gotten rusty. But I was wrong. This one beat him. Overwhelmingly. You feel it too, don’t you?”

“I do… painfully so. This is the first time I’ve ever felt this hopeless. We’ll have to overwhelm him with numbers—something on a strategic scale. A one-on-one won’t work. We wouldn’t last seconds.”

“…As much as I hate to admit it, I feel the same. It’s been a long time since I felt fear on the battlefield. I’ll call the others. I just hope he doesn’t attack before then…”

Byakuren and Thor were frozen.

So was Kaguya.

“…I’m scared. What… is this machine…”

She stood, speechless.

The top warriors understood it instantly—because they were top-tier.

This man… was on a completely different level.

He had reached heights they could not imagine.

He stood at the pinnacle of martial strength.

“So it was you…”

Kenya’s fury boiled quietly. But that wasn’t his priority now.

He opened a private channel to the Asgardian army.

Just as Tanaka advised—no open chats. He couldn’t risk his identity being discovered.
He couldn’t afford to abandon the name Sword Sylphid just yet.

While Byakuren and the others were frozen by his pressure, Kenya rushed to Reina and Sieg’s side.

“Reina! Are you okay!?”

“Kenya-kun… Papa… Papa…”

“We need to treat him now! He might still be alive!”

Kenya grasped the situation in an instant.

He moved to save Sieg. But they were still in the middle of a battlefield.

First, he had to secure the area. His mind raced through possibilities.

And then—

“Cough, cough… Is that you… Mikazuchi…?”

“Sieg-san!?”

“Papa!?”

Zeke stirred, his voice hoarse and weak.

Reina and Kenya felt a brief wave of relief—only to lose their voices at his next words.

“I’ll be brief. I’m going to die. There’s no surviving this wound…”

“That can’t be…”

“Lies! Lies! No! Nooo!”

“Listen to me, Reina!”

Gritting his teeth, Sieg shouted to Reina, who was sobbing uncontrollably and refusing to listen.

The father who was always so gentle… yelled for the first time. That desperate cry made Reina fall silent.

“Mitsurugi, I have two requests. Sadly, the front line has collapsed—there’s no rebuilding it. So I’m issuing a full retreat. I need you to buy us time. You should understand by now… those people aren’t evil either.”

“Yes… I understand.”

“I know it’s asking a lot. But you—”

“…I can do it. I’ll handle it.”

Kenya focused all his attention so he wouldn’t miss a single word of Sieg’s final message.

“…Yeah. And one more thing. This one’s personal, and I’m sorry for that…”

“Please, ask me anything.”

“Heh… In that case—my son, I’m asking you… make my daughter happy.”

Sieg’s final request was a heartfelt wish entrusted to Kenya.

The feelings of a father who was about to leave his only daughter behind.

Hearing that, Kenya answered clearly and without hesitation.

“…Yes. Even if it costs me my life. I’ll make Reina happy.”

“I knew you’d say that. Reina… I’m sorry. You came all this way to save me, and I was so surprised… but I was happy. I’m sorry. In the end, I still failed.”

“No… If only I’d been stronger!”

“It’s okay, Reina. It was just my time.”

“Dad! I remember everything now! You’re really my dad! Everything—even about Mom!”

“…Reina, I see. There was so much I still wanted to tell you about your mother, things I wanted to say and apologize for… but there’s no time. I only have one last request. Please listen.”

“…Uh-huh.”

“Don’t hate them. Don’t carry on the chain of hatred. If you keep fighting for revenge in my name… I won’t be able to rest in peace. I took so much from them too—families, people they cared about. This is just my turn. This is what it means for times to change. So please… I beg you. Don’t be consumed by revenge.”

“But… but… how could I just forgive…?”

“Reina, time will heal it… just don’t forget. I know this is selfish… but there’s no time. I’m sorry.”

Then Sieg cut the communication line.

“Dad? Dad! I still have more to say! Dad! I—!”

Sieg switched to the general command line and gave his final order.

“To all Asgard troops stationed in District 13! Abandon this area! Fall back to Asgard headquarters immediately! Go straight—don’t look back! Survive! As many of you as possible!”

Everyone obeyed Sieg’s final command and began their retreat without hesitation.

“Dad! No! Nooo!”

Still unwilling to leave Sieg’s side, Reina was approached by his subordinates, who tried to take her away.

But she resisted violently, refusing to move.

Seeing this, Kenya drew his sword.

“Reina… I’m sorry.”

“Kenya!? What are you—”

Kenya struck Aphrodite, rendering it inoperative.

With a jarring sound, Reina’s unit powered down.

He believed that in her current state, no words could reach her—and he had no choice but to forcibly take her to safety.

“Kenya! No! Please, stop! Don’t!”

The disabled Aphrodite was then carried away by several KOGs under Sieg’s command.

Sieg reestablished the connection to Kenya one last time.

“Sorry, Mitsurugi… for making you do something you might be hated for… cough”

“…It’s fine. I’ll apologize later, until she forgives me. Because I have to make her happy.”

“Heh… then I’ll leave it all… to you.”

“Yes.”

“You’re a good son… I always wanted one. It was my dream—to raise him strictly, to make him stronger than me, the greatest knight in the world. And to think, in the end… I really did… have a good son… Than…k you… Ke…nya…”

“Y-yes… I felt like you were… really my dad… Sieg…”

“………”

“Sieg? Sieg!!”

But Kenya’s voice no longer reached him.

Sieg, who had held on until the very end, passed away that day.

The war god who fought to protect until the last moment—died protecting his daughter on the battlefield.

Sieg died as he had lived—true to himself.

That way of life was carved deeply into Kenya’s heart—like that of a real father.

He remembered that warm back that once carried him, and it felt like his heart would break.

Even if it was brief, Kenya loved Sieg like a real father.

He truly felt like he’d received a father’s love.

He wished they’d had more time together. That they could’ve laughed more.

But that warm back was gone now.

“…Dad.”

Tears blurred his vision, making it hard to pilot.

Even so—

Kenya bowed his head to Sieg, then took to the skies.

Gripping his sword in both hands, he faced forward.

His vision was hazy from the unending tears—but he never looked away.

Because he carried someone’s final wish.

“Sieg… leave it to me. I’ll make sure the entire Asgard army escapes. And I swear—Reina will be happy, no matter what.”

Alone, Kenya stood against an army of over fifty thousand KOGs.

Before him were the yellow, blue, and red knights.

And behind them—a wall of over 50,000 KOGs.

To fulfill a dying wish, the world’s strongest knight takes a stand.

“I will! The world’s strongest son of my dad—will make it happen!!”

And so, he stood alone against the world.
