Chapter 76: The Origin of the War God
“They’re here… What an overwhelming number. Lord-sama must have already received a report, but we can’t expect reinforcements for a while.”
Standing at the frontlines was Sieg Sylphid.
He had retired from active duty—under normal circumstances, he should never have set foot on the battlefield again.
But as the one responsible for Japan’s defense, he couldn’t afford to stay back when the nation was under attack.
And more importantly—
“If this operation fails, the war is over.”
The enemy’s forces outnumbered theirs by nearly threefold—a sheer overwhelming advantage.
Even with a defensive position, they would inevitably be overrun.
But if they could hold out for three days, there was still a chance—reinforcements would arrive.
“Evacuations are still ongoing. Reinforcements from the mainland will come in due time. You all must hold the line for three days.”
“We’ll hold as long as we can. We’ll probably die, though.”
“Well said. I’m counting on you. You’re all I’ve got.”
“Well, of course, Sieg-sama—you went and freed all the Class-2 Asgardian soldiers, after all. We’re short on manpower!”
“I simply eliminated the risk of getting shot in the back.”
“Yeah, sure. Let’s go with that. Haa… If I get a two-rank promotion after I die, make sure my family gets a good pension. My daughter’s still young, you know.”
Sieg’s men laughed at his words.
Before preparing their defensive line, Sieg had freed all Class-2 Asgardians—every Japanese soldier under his command.
It hadn’t halved their numbers, but it had significantly weakened their forces.
“Haha, I’m afraid you’ll have to ask someone else for that.”
Then, Sieg stepped forward.
If he was going into battle, he would lead from the front—ahead of his men.
That was his way of fighting.
“I won’t allow any of you to die before me. So don’t you dare die! I’m counting on you all!”
“Understood, sir! We’re with you to the end!”
And with that, Sieg and the 13th District Garrison took to the skies.
Before them lay the World Allied Forces—and a single red KOG charging straight at them.
Above and below, an overwhelming army stretched across the sky and sea, numbering in the tens of thousands.
And then—
Sieg issued the command.
“All units, commence battle! Hold the line—no matter what! Defend this place until my dying breath!!”
“Yes, sir!!”
Thus, the battle to reclaim Japan had begun.
“HAAAA!!”
“Wh-What is this machine?! A-Aaahhh!!”
The girl fought like a raging fire.
Her red machine burned like flames, cutting down enemy KOGs one after another.
“That makes… five!”
Swinging her crimson sword, she felled her fifth Asgardian KOG.
As the first spear of the World Alliance, she had charged in alone—immediately becoming surrounded by nearly ten enemy units.
But then—
“Don’t stray too far from my sight, Princess. I won’t be able to protect you.”
The strongest man in Asia cut down the enemies closing in on her, keeping her from being overwhelmed.
His blue machine, known as Seiryu, had performance equal to Kaguya’s Kagutsuchi.
But in terms of piloting skill—Byakuren was the superior warrior.
One of the strongest in the world—his title was well-earned.
“I don’t need a babysitter, Supreme Commander.”
“You’re as stubborn as ever… but that’s part of your charm, I suppose. That said, the enemy’s defense is holding strong. It won’t be easy to break through. The hole you punched through their lines has already been filled.”
After cutting down most of the enemies around them, Kaguya and Byakuren took a brief moment to catch their breath.
They returned to their mothership to resupply.
Though they had momentarily shattered the enemy’s defenses, the Asgardian Army quickly rebuilt their front lines.
Their high level of discipline and rigorous training was evident—they fought without hesitation or weakness.
“Looks like that’s it for today…”
By the time the battle paused, it was past midnight.
The World Allied Forces halted their attack, shifting to rest and resupply.
But come morning, they would launch another relentless assault.
Yet despite their best efforts, the frontlines refused to break.
“Their counterattacks are brutal… I’m really feeling that ‘three-times attack rule.’ Even with our superior numbers, we can’t push through.”
“On my battlefield, we were winning. But elsewhere, we’re getting pushed back. Some fronts have already lost and retreated… What the hell is happening?”
On the second night, a strategy meeting took place aboard the mothership.
Byakuren, Thor, Kaguya, and several other commanders gathered.
“Byakuren. If this drags on any longer, Asgardian reinforcements will arrive. We should commit all forces tomorrow.”
Thor’s suggestion was logical.
Byakuren knew that delaying further was a bad idea.
But still—
“Show me footage from the battlefields that have fallen.”
(There’s an unusually strong unit somewhere… That must be the reason our offensives are failing…)
They analyzed the footage.
It showed ordinary enemy squads—and at the frontline, a slightly decorated, yet standard KOG.
However—
“It’s strong… A mass-produced unit shouldn’t be able to fight like this. This machine… It must belong to a general. What do you think, Thor?”
“I’ve seen this before—once. We had a perfect trap, overwhelming numbers, everything in our favor. But they held out beyond reason. And then, Lord Asgard himself arrived and crushed us.”
“Come to think of it… There was someone, wasn’t there? The former Holy Knight Commander of this region. They were supposed to be retired, but…”
“Ah… No doubt about it. I only know of them from rumors, but…”
Byakuren, Thor, and Kaguya all thought of the same person.
A name once feared across the world.
A warrior said to have retired—a name that had disappeared from the battlefield.
Byakuren closed his eyes.
He thought for a moment—
Then, slowly, he opened them.
And smiled.
Asgard, Capital Valhalla
“Hah… hah… Alright. With this number, there should be no problem. Prepare the reinforcements immediately! They must arrive by tomorrow!”
“A-As expected of Lord-sama… To organize that amount in just two days…”
Lord had been fighting—not on the battlefield, but through calculations. Documents, supplies, food, weapons—every logistical detail had been accounted for.
Including simulations for an Odin-led invasion, he calculated how many troops could be mobilized and how many were needed to secure victory.
The fact that he had reorganized the military—left in shambles by Odin—in just two days was a testament to Lord’s brilliance.
“This is nothing compared to those risking their lives on the battlefield. You all did well.”
“N-No… But the 13th District still hasn’t fallen? Even against such overwhelming numbers… Incredible.”
Pieces were arranged on the strategy board. At first glance, the enemy’s reported strength seemed enough to force an immediate retreat.
And yet, because of Zeke’s valiant resistance, the defensive line held.
In the 13th District, they had around 10,000 KOGs, while the World Union forces were estimated to have at least 50,000.
Even though defending was easier than attacking, the difference was staggering.
Had the enemy committed all their forces at once, the district would have already fallen.
“Sieg is holding them off. He excels in defensive battles. He understands better than anyone the importance of keeping this district.”
“…The War God.”
“Yes. If we hold this ground, the World Union’s first campaign will end in failure, and the war will be over. No more bloodshed. That’s why Sieg refuses to retreat—he’s willing to lay down his life to protect it.”
Lord recalled the origin of Sieg’s title.
“When leading an army, he’s second to none—even Osiris would struggle against him. He’s the Empire’s greatest guardian.”
The title of “War God” was given to Sieg because every army he led fought with an almost divine efficiency.
(…Don’t push yourself too hard, Sieg.)
Just then, Lord received a call.
“…Ah… I see. Reina? She went alone? No, it’s fine. At this point, no one can stop her… nor will she stop herself.”
The report stated that Reina Sylphid had launched.
Piloting her personal unit, Aphrodite, she had taken off alone for Japan.
Japan Recapture Operation – Day 3, Early Morning
The World Union launched another assault.
Sieg and his forces began their counterattack.
“Sieg-san…! At this rate, we can do it!”
“Yes. It’s thanks to your efforts. I also just received word from the homeland—reinforcements numbering in the tens of thousands of KOGs will arrive by tomorrow. If we hold out today, victory is ours.”
“Then this is the final stretch… Honestly, after fighting alongside you, I feel like I’ve grown impossibly stronger. Is this the power of the War God?”
“Heh. Don’t be ridiculous. That’s your own strength. I only—”
Sieg took off in his KOG, wielding both sword and rifle.
“—place my trust in your backs. I’m counting on you today as well!”
That unwavering presence gave courage to those behind him.
And those behind him would fight with their lives to protect his back.
Under Sieg’s leadership, the troops displayed an almost supernatural level of growth, exceeding their limits.
“Leave it to us!”
Sieg was far stronger when commanding an army than when fighting alone.
And so, the War God took flight once more—to turn a battlefield of defeat into a battlefield of victory.
However—
Three enemy KOGs soared toward him simultaneously.
A trio of machines—one blue, one red, one yellow—converged on the same location.
Their target was a single unit.
Piloting them were three of the world’s strongest warriors—Byakuren, Thor, and Kaguya.
All three had their sights locked onto Sieg’s KOG.
“Let’s go, Thor, Kaguya.”
“Yeah.”
“Understood.”
Byakuren gave the order.
Their objective was clear.
“Eliminate the War God!”
