Chapter 48: Field Training

“Look! It’s Jin-sama! Ah, he just looked this way!”

“And the one beside him… Kyaaah! It’s Sword-sama! So cute!! And despite being adorable, there’s a rumor that he’s even stronger than Jin-sama!!”

“Could it be that those two are…? Kyaaa, kyaaa… Who’s the bottom? Kyaaaa, Kyaaa… Personally, I think Sword-sama is actually the dominant one… Kyaaa, Kyaaaa…”

As usual, while walking through the school, high-pitched squeals filled the air.

Among them, one voice clearly belonged to a rotten person, but Kenya decided to ignore it. If he engaged, he might get dragged into the madness.

“Sword, you’re quite the celebrity now. So, what about a girlfriend? With your status, it should be easy… W-Wait, don’t tell me—me!? I’m honored, but…”

“Please stop. I’m straight.”

Jin and Sword finished their lunch at the cafeteria and walked through the courtyard.

At this academy, they had become the most famous knights.

Jin, of course, was the youngest ever Grand Holy Knight and the strongest of his generation.

“I never thought being the subject of weird fantasies could be so uncomfortable… What about you, Jin? You’re popular, right?”

“My one true love is KOG. But unfortunately, KOG is more obsessed with you and never even smiles at me.”

“Haha, guess it’s all about persistence and devotion, huh?”

Kenya had grown close to Jin.

Jin constantly challenged him to fights, making him feel like a gaming buddy.

Though their first meeting had been tense, Kenya soon realized Jin wasn’t a bad person at all.

He was straightforward, childlike, and deeply devoted to KOG.

That was enough for Kenya to consider him a friend.

And it wasn’t just Jin.

“Good morning, Jin-kun, Sword-kun.”

As they entered the classroom, Lielbert greeted them warmly.

Even Zoid acknowledged their presence with a simple nod.

“Good morning, everyone! Many of you have field training today—are you ready?”

Colonel Star entered the room, greeting everyone.

Today would mark the first official field training exercise—a mandatory requirement for the Holy Knight exam.

After all, no matter how skilled someone was in simulations, they couldn’t become a Holy Knight without real battlefield experience.

“I wonder what field training actually involves. Reina, do you know?”

“No, but I’ve heard that it usually involves peacekeeping missions in conflict zones. My training is on a different day, but is yours today, Onii-chan?”

“Yeah, looks like it. The team is…”

Just then, Colonel Star announced the selected members.

“Alright, today’s field training team consists of Sword, Jin, and Lielbert. Once you’re ready, head to the designated location.”

And so, the three of them set off.

————————————

“Jin-san, Lielbert-san, have you done field training before?”

“Hmm? Oh, yeah, plenty. In fact, I’ve even been on real battlefields.”

Jin answered casually as they traveled in a military vehicle, heading toward a conflict zone.

Today’s mission was to pacify a resistance stronghold.

Even within the Asgard Empire, rebellions still erupted—just like the resistance that had formed in Japan.

Since Jin was Holy Knight Commander, he had already experienced real combat multiple times.

“I’ve done some too, though mine were in smaller-scale conflicts.”

Lielbert added.

(Well… I guess I have experience too. Though mine was a little too intense…)

Kenya recalled the battle in Japan where he took down a hundred enemies single-handedly.

Few people could claim their first battlefield experience was such pure hell.

“We’ve arrived.”

Their driver, a Rank 2 Asgardian, announced.

Despite being younger than Kenya and the others, he spoke in polite formality due to their difference in status.

Rank 2 citizens were often relegated to menial tasks.

After living in the Asgard Empire for nearly six months, Kenya had seen it happen countless times.

That’s why, at the very least, he made sure to treat them with respect.

“Thank you for the ride.”

“N-No, not at all. Please stay safe…”

(Am I just doing this to make myself feel better? Is this… hypocrisy?)

“Sword, you really are an odd one… No need to be so polite to a Rank 2.”

“Yeah… Maybe I am strange.”

Their destination was a military camp.

It was located far from the city, close to the border, in a barren wasteland dotted with small structures.

The resistance headquarters was nearby, and today’s mission was to force their surrender.

A man who appeared to be the commander approached, rubbing his hands together.

“Ah! Welcome, welcome! You must be exhausted from your journey! I am Major Nez, the officer in charge of this area!”

The rat-faced major fawned over them excessively.

He wasn’t literally groveling, but his hands were wringing together so intensely that smoke might as well have been rising from them.

“We appreciate your hospitality. We look forward to working with you.”

“Ahh, though I must say, this battlefield is hardly suited for someone of Jin-sama’s status. It is an honor to have you here!”

Jin returned the greeting, and Major Nez immediately tried to flatter him.

It made sense—Jin’s military rank was incredibly high, just below a general.

And then—

“Oh! And could it be—Sword-sama!? It is truly an honor to meet you!!”

“…Likewise.”

Although it was mostly rumors, Kenya was known as “Lord’s Knight.”

That placed him at the same rank as the future Grand Holy Knight—or perhaps even higher.

Which meant…

“To be on the same battlefield as the future leaders of the Asgard Empire is the highest honor!! I now have a great story to share with my son!!”

The major continued to flatter the two endlessly.

“I’m Lielbert! Looking forward to working with you today!”

“Ah, yes. Likewise.”

“That treatment, though!”

Perhaps because Lielbert was a commoner and not a Holy Knight, his reception was noticeably different.

It was blatant favoritism, but in the meritocratic Asgard Empire, it was hardly surprising.

Even so, Kenya couldn’t help but make a mental jab at it.

“What would you like to do? Will you be heading out to battle? If you prefer, I can make a favorable report for you. This area is considered relatively peaceful, so—”

“No, that won’t be necessary. We’ll take three KOG units.”

Major Nez casually suggested slacking off, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Field training was often seen as a hassle, and many noble and elite knights tended to take it easy.

But in this squad—

There was a by-the-book class representative, and two KOG fanatics: Kenya and Jin.

For them, the idea of wasting time wasn’t even an option.

“Understood! Right this way.”

They were led to their KOG units and mounted them.

The three of them moved toward the designated point displayed on their monitors.

“Sword, this is your first battlefield, right? Stay relaxed.”

“Y-Yeah…”

(Something feels off…)

According to what he had been told, their mission was primarily to suppress resistance only if they retaliated.

But—

As Kenya advanced, the sound of gunfire and explosions suddenly filled the air.

A terrible feeling spread through his chest.

The black smoke rising in the distance made one thing painfully clear—

This was not a peaceful suppression.

What was happening here was not simply pacification.

“Why… why are children dying?”

What awaited Kenya at the battlefield was a sight he had seen once before.

The image still haunted him—outstretched hands, pleading for help.

Helpless children.

And now, before his very eyes, were people who had already surrendered, being slaughtered.

“W-What is this?! Weren’t we just supposed to subdue them?!”

The moment they arrived, a transmission came through from Major Nez.

“A moment ago, we received an order from Lord Odin regarding the resistance, which I will now read aloud: ‘All non-Asgardians in that region—’”

He spoke in a monotone voice, completely devoid of hesitation or remorse.

“—are to be killed.”

It was a massacre order.
