Chapter 41: Test of Strength
“You guys, these are your new classmates! Now, both of you, introduce yourselves!”
Reina stepped forward without hesitation. Seeing her unwavering confidence in moments like these, Kenya couldn’t help but be impressed as she began her introduction.
“Reina Sylphid.”
“…”
“…”
Silence.
“Huh? That’s it?”
A boy suddenly stood up and raised his voice, looking at Reina with an expression that screamed, Seriously? That’s all?
“Is there a problem?”
“Of course, there is! There’s gotta be more! I had to step in and react even though it’s not my role!”
The boy’s reaction was like a classic Kansai-style comedic retort. Despite his intellectual appearance—blond hair and glasses—his outburst made it clear that he was the designated straight man in comedic exchanges.
“An introduction is meant to help others get to know you better, right? You could at least say where you’re from—”
“My place of birth… Sorry, I don’t really remember.”
“Wait, what? That’s a thing?”
The entire class fell into an awkward silence.
Sensing the weird atmosphere, Kenya quickly jumped in with his introduction.
“I-I’m Sword Sylphid! Reina’s older brother! I come from Special District 13. My father is Sieg Sylphid, and we’re from a baron family!”
“Oh, thank God! If both of you were the silent type, I wouldn’t know what to do! I’m the class representative—well, mostly just because I’m the oldest. Name’s Lielbert. I may be a commoner, but in this class, I’m your senior. Nice to meet you.”
Lielbert extended his hand for a handshake. Kenya and Reina responded in kind before heading to their seats.
Lielbert gave off the vibe of a strict class president. Being a commoner meant he wasn’t from a noble family, so he was probably on an elite track based purely on merit. There was a slightly uptight air about him, but he had to be talented to be in this class.
“Yo, long time no see, Silver. I was surprised when I heard you went off to some training school in the frontier, but I see you’ve come back.”
A deep voice called out to Reina. It carried a weighty tone, and the way he spoke reeked of arrogance, as if he already knew her.
Kenya immediately picked up on it.
This guy was the one who ran the class.
Kenya had always been sensitive to school social hierarchies, and his gut instinct told him that this guy was the top of the food chain here. Not just important—self-important.
And he seemed to know Reina.
“You are…?”
Reina tilted her head as she turned toward him.
“Who are you?”
(She doesn’t know him?! He totally sounded like they had some history!)
The man’s face turned bright red with rage.
“You forgot me?! Me, a duke’s son in this nation?!”
(A duke? That sounds pretty high up… though I don’t know much about noble rankings.)
From what Kenya remembered, dukes were among the highest-ranking nobles in his previous world.
“A duke… Ah, now I remember. We fought once before, didn’t we? Your name was… Soiya?”
(Whew, at least she remembered…)
Kenya let out a small sigh of relief. He really didn’t want Reina making enemies on their first day.
But Reina wasn’t exactly known for softening her words.
“WHO THE HELL IS SOIYA?! MY NAME IS ZOID! Very well, I’ll make sure you’ll never forget it again… Fight me! I’ll make up for the humiliation I suffered back then!!”
(Well, that backfired. If she wasn’t sure, she should’ve just stayed quiet… And she wasn’t even close.)
“Hah! Well, this is a perfect opportunity!”
Suddenly, Colonel Star, who had been watching the scene unfold with an amused smile, clapped his hands together.
“I was planning to assess everyone’s abilities today anyway. It just so happens that we have some graduates visiting—real Holy Knights. Let’s see what you’re made of!”
From the beginning, it seemed like Colonel Star had intended to pit them against the Holy Knights to gauge their abilities.
“Colonel! Let me be on the Holy Knights’ side! I just became a Holy Knight myself this year, so it’s fair!”
(Wait, this guy, Zoid, is a duke’s son and a Holy Knight? That sounds ridiculously elite…)
“Fine by me. Today’s goal is to evaluate the Ice Princess of Silver and Sieg’s kid.”
“Alright then, how about this lineup? Zoid, Lielbert, and… Hmm, Jin, you up for it?”
Colonel Star turned to a young man with a slightly sinister smile.
Jin had golden hair, marking him as an Asgardian, but his demeanor was calm and composed, making him difficult to read. His sharp, deep-set features made him look much older than Kenya and the others.
But more than that, the way people around him reacted told Kenya all he needed to know.
Jin was a big deal.
Even Zoid, who had been acting like the king of the class, showed hints of unease in his presence.
At last, the silent young man spoke.
“Is that an order, Colonel?”
“Haha, I wouldn’t dare order you. Think of it as a request.”
“…Sigh. Fine. If it’s your request, I suppose I can’t refuse.”
Jin stood up and walked toward Kenya and Reina.
“Alright! Then let’s move to the simulation room! The seniors are already waiting. It’s been a while since we had a good mock battle!”
Colonel Star was practically giddy with excitement.
He was starting to look like an old man watching baseball with a beer in hand, but in this world, KOGs were both weapons and entertainment.
In the previous world, KOG battles were incredibly popular as a game, with tournaments attracting massive audiences. So, it made sense why there was such a strong focus on their spectacle.
When they arrived at the simulation room, three military officers were chatting casually.
One of them noticed their arrival and called out to Colonel Star.
“Colonel, you’re late after summoning us. We’re Holy Knights now, y’know? We’re the backbone of national defense!”
A Holy Knight stood up, his voice full of easy going confidence.
For some reason, he gave off the vibe of a flashy college student from a party-heavy sports club. The other two, also young soldiers, had a similar energy—like carefree guys from a drinking club.
“What are you talking about? You freeloaders have nothing better to do than mess around.”
“Haha, can’t argue with that. We barely have anything to do besides training.”
“Graduates train the current students. Then, those students graduate and train the next generation. That’s how it works. I’m counting on you guys today too.”
“If it’s for you, Colonel! So, we’re up against those two—wait, Jin?! He’s in this too?”
“No, he’s just observing for now. The main event today is these two. You know them, right? They’re Sieg Sylphid’s children.”
“Sieg… Wait, you mean the Sieg? The God of War?! Whoa, that’s insane. And damn, she’s cute too.”
(The more I listen, the flashier they sound. I’ll just call them the Party Boy Trio.)
The three of them let out an excited cheer as they looked at Reina.
(As her big brother, I refuse to acknowledge these guys.)
“Alright! Let’s get started. The student team will be Lielbert, Sword, and Reina. The Holy Knight team will be Zoid and you three. And since we’re here, let’s make it interesting—winners treat the losers to lunch! If the students lose, I’ll cover it, so don’t worry. Fight however you like!”
Colonel Star proposed an essentially no-risk bet, his generosity clear.
Wait… Was his face red? Was he already drinking?!
It seemed the colonel had fully transitioned into spectator mode.
“So, what’s the plan, you two? If we do a knockout-style match where each side rotates in, we’re at a huge disadvantage…”
He was about to suggest a format where they would swap fighters, but given the power gap between apprentices and Holy Knights, it wasn’t exactly a fair system.
He was still thinking of a better alternative when—
“I’m fine with the knockout format.”
A girl’s voice rang out.
“…Reina?!”
“Huh?!”
“What did you just say?!”
Kenya, the Party Boy Trio, and even Zoid all reacted at the same time.
They immediately understood what she meant.
She wasn’t just agreeing to a knockout format.
“I said, knockout format is fine. Since we’re here, I might as well take down all of you.”
The Ice Princess was back in full battle-junkie mode when it came to KOGs.
Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she unknowingly provoked the Holy Knights’ anger.
“This is going be fun, big brother.”
