Chapter 26: Victory and Despair
“Lord-sama!?”
“Sieg, dispose of the body and make it look like she was killed by the Resistance.”
Sieg was so shocked that he couldn’t move.
He felt a deep fear toward the boy who, without hesitation, kicked aside his own sister’s corpse and gave orders as if nothing had happened.
“No one else must know about this. Just you and me. I understand… that you have a special attachment to this country.”
“!? …How do you know that?”
“I did a little digging. Don’t take it the wrong way. But you must have hated her too, didn’t you? That woman, treating human lives like trash.”
Even though they were both of royal blood, the way he spoke of his own sister was utterly devoid of affection. His eyes regarded her like she truly was garbage.
“…Understood. I’ll take this secret to my grave.”
Even if he were to expose the truth, Lord would just crush the revelation and make it as if nothing had happened. Sieg didn’t believe he could outmaneuver Lord’s schemes.
Besides, that woman was nothing but a blight upon this nation. The world would be a better place without her.
She was that rotten.
Even the knights who served the Asgard Empire thought she was better off dead.
For Sieg, keeping silent was the best choice.
“Well then, shall we return?”
“…Yes.”
◇
Back to the moment when Reina returned to the command room.
“Now then, show me the map, identification signals, and known enemy positions.”
“Yes, sir!”
Lord sat on his throne, staring at the massive monitor in front of him, which displayed the battlefield.
The blue markers represented allies. The red markers were enemies. It was a simple yet effective tactical map.
Each allied unit was labeled with a letter, and the individual soldiers within each unit were numbered.
Lord examined the map for a while.
Then, as if his thoughts had aligned, he stood up and issued an order to the soldiers.
“Well then… it’s time for our counterattack.”
The order to strike back at the Resistance had been given.
◇
Meanwhile, Ymir’s personal guard.
“Damn it! Why do these inferior scum have KOGs!?”
“They even brought out ancient weaponry!?”
“We’re surrounded! What happened to Gillian-sama!? Our communications are down!”
The full force of Isshin’s Resistance had encircled Ymir’s personal guard with the KOGs they had captured.
Bazookas and tanks joined the fray, bombarding the guards and pinning them down under relentless fire.
“Alright! Right flank, advance and circle behind them! Left flank, keep them suppressed with gunfire!”
“Understood!”
Isshin’s leadership was sharp and precise—he was an exceptional commander.
In the past, they had been utterly crushed by the overwhelming might of KOGs, but now, they had their own.
Furthermore, the loss of their leader, Gillian, had left Ymir’s personal guard without coordination. They were unable to act effectively.
Isshin capitalized on this opportunity, concentrating his forces for a decisive assault.
And then, the final blow arrived.
“Wh-what the hell are you!?”
Kenya had arrived.
In a single strike, he cleaved through an exhausted KOG from the enemy’s ranks.
“You made it, Kenya-kun!”
Although they had failed to capture Ymir, Kenya—the one who had defeated Gillian—had joined the battle.
“Isshin-san, cover me. I’ll take them all down.”
From within his KOG, Kouta’s voice echoed across the battlefield.
Watching his towering figure, Isshin couldn’t help but smile.
(Hah… What a dependable man. It’s hard to believe I’m the older one here.)
Though Kenya was around the same age as his daughter, he had become an irreplaceable presence on the battlefield.
He reminded Isshin of the reliable senior soldiers he had looked up to in his own youth.
“Got it! Go wild out there!”
(He’s grown even stronger… Kenya-kun.)
Kenya had learned to control his anger. He had defeated an imperial Holy Knight Commander. And now, he was taking another step forward.
“I will… kill them.”
He spoke as if convincing himself.
But it was not a reckless, rage-fueled impulse.
He fought not out of hatred, but because he had to kill in order to protect.
He had not become desensitized to killing.
But he had accepted it. Accepted that he would take lives, and that his own life was on the line as well.
Both sides had put their lives on the line for this war.
There was no room for naive ideas about peaceful negotiations on the battlefield.
And so—
“What the hell is this guy!?”
“How is he moving like that!?”
“A monster!!”
“I will kill you all properly. I understand that. With these hands. Without a doubt. Because that is what it means to fight. That is what it means to face this world.”
One by one, Kenya cut down the personal guards.
Isshin’s covering fire ensured that none could escape.
“This is… the last one!”
With a final slash, Kenya struck down the last enemy KOG.
“Ymir-sama… forgive us…”
Then, the KOG exploded.
Ymir’s entire personal guard had been annihilated.
Kenya disembarked from his KOG and rushed over to Isshin and the others.
And then, from behind—
“Kenya!”
“Kaguya!”
A girl with short black hair rushed toward him.
Her cheeks were smudged with soot, and blackened tears streaked down her face as she threw herself into his chest.
“I was so worried…”
“Thank you, Kaguya…”
Kenya and Kaguya embraced.
The tense atmosphere of the battlefield heightened their emotions.
They gazed into each other’s eyes and slowly drew closer.
Their hearts pounded.
Kaguya’s cheeks turned red.
She closed her eyes.
And then—
“Are you about to kiss?”
A deep, gruff voice interrupted them.
A bearded middle-aged man had wedged himself between Kaguya and Kouta.
His name was Isshin Kurokami—Kaguya’s father.
“S-sorry! I just got caught up in the moment!”
“D-Dad!?”
“I understand that this is a touching reunion, but now isn’t exactly the time for it. I get that emotions are running high, but…”
“Y-you idiot! I just got something in my eye, that’s all! What are you even thinking!? Pervert!”
“Huh…? Why am I the one getting called that…?”
Isshin was left speechless, holding his cheek where Kaguya had just slapped him with full force.
Pouting and fuming, Kaguya turned her back on Kenya.
(W-what am I even doing!? T-there’s no way! A-a kiss, just like that!??)
She turned her face downward, burning red, mumbling “impossible” to herself over and over.
The thought that she had almost kissed Kenya, swept up in the atmosphere, was utterly mortifying. Her face felt like it was on fire.
“Haha… A-anyway, Isshin-san, is that all of them?”
“Yeah, that should be all.”
“I see… Sorry. Ymir managed to escape.”
“I see… But you did well. Thanks to you, we avoided complete annihilation.”
The soldiers behind them also expressed their gratitude to Kenya.
“Don’t get complacent! First, we focus on rescuing survivors and evacuating! This slum is no longer safe! We have to save as many people as possible!”
“Yeahhh!!!”
The enemy was gone.
The Resistance had won.
But the cost was far too great.
No one was in the mood to celebrate.
Kenya surveyed the ruins and the countless bodies.
Once again, he was reminded—war was nothing but tragedy.
And yet, at least… it was finally over.
Or so he thought.
“To the Resistance!”
A booming voice, amplified by a loudspeaker, reached Kenya and the others.
It was unfamiliar, but it was clearly the voice of an Asgard military officer.
“Princess Ymir has perished. Regicide is a grave crime. Therefore, you scum are unworthy even of third-class citizenship! And so, right here, right now—”
Dark shadows filled the sky.
At least a hundred of them, blotting out the sun.
“We will exterminate you!!”
Every single one was a KOG.
A massive force of jet-black machines, like the very embodiment of despair itself.
The elite division of the 13th Special District Army had arrived—at Lord’s request.
They had only one purpose.
To kill Kenya and the others.
“No way… this can’t be happening…”
