Chapter 63. Justification
The Uleri River, which flows northeast of the Royal Capital, has several weirs in various places. These are installed to regulate the water flow during times of high water.
The marching troop led by Lionel reached the nearest weir to the royal capital and was conducting an inspection of the dam and its surroundings.
Meanwhile, Gilbert and the others finished setting up camp and gathered in the shed that served as the carriage’s loading platform, silently working on their tasks.
They were manually processing the weapons used by their companions and the additional ones that Goliath brought with him.
However, since they couldn’t work on the blades while moving, they focused on the hilts.
They cut narrow strips of tanned leather, wrapping them around the grips and fixing them in place with rivets Dolph had made. This was to prevent slipping, anticipating a battle against the undead slime. To ensure the ends wouldn’t unravel, they wrapped them with cords Flora had braided.
“Even though Grandma told me to pray, but I’ve been concentrating on my work and haven’t had much time to pray…”
Gilbert mumbled as he inspected a sword after wrapping the hilt in leather and hammering in the rivets. Flora laughed lightly beside him.
“That is also a kind of ‘formless prayer,’ I’m sure.”
“Now that you mention it, we did talk about something like that not too long ago.”
Although it had been less than a month, so many things had happened that it felt like such a long time ago. Just as Barbara had once said, indeed, as they added modifications to each weapon, they certainly had the wielder in mind.
“…It seems I quite like spending time moving my hands like this. If this is good enough, I could pray endlessly.”
“I understand. Moreover, the sounds of crafting something is like music. It’s quite soothing, isn’t it?”
Flora’s voice sounded so cheerful as she agreed, Gilbert couldn’t help but smile.
“Gilbert, you’re not subconsciously putting your infatuation into my weapon as a blessing, are you…?”
“Huh!? W-what are you talking about, idiot!”
A mercenary who peeked in with a dubious expression teased him in a low voice, causing him to almost tear the leather he was wrapping around the handle.
The mercenary was laughing happily. He had taken a liking to the wish buttons and embroidered shirts Gilbert and Flora had made, and was planning to order some for his wife and children who awaited him in the Kelvim territory. He had offered a substantial amount of money as a down payment, which was quite troublesome.
In the back of the room, Dolph and Barbara wore warm smiles as they watched. Even though it was only a day until they reached the royal capital, there was still the same carefree atmosphere, which made Gilbert smile, a little.
However, as the sun began to set and they started preparing dinner, the distant sounds of multiple horses whinnying caught the attention of those in the camp, sending a wave of tension through them.
“What was that…? Which direction did it come from?”
“It’s the opposite direction from the dam where Lionel and the others are investigating.”
As they were checking, Lionel and his party also heard the noise and rushed over.
“It seems a carriage is being attacked further down the road; let’s go and help.”
“Is it the undead magical beasts…?!”
“…No, probably bandits. I can hear the sound of weapons clashing.”
When they arrived, they found Lionel’s former subordinates, the Black Knights, had already taken control of the situation.
The carriage that appeared to have been assaulted was sturdy yet crude in design—it didn’t seem like one used by commoners or merchants. On top of that, there was an unusually large number of soldiers who seemed to be guarding it.
It was dubious whether the subdued bandits were merely common robbers.
As things settled down, the door of the carriage opened, and a noblewoman peeked out from inside.
“Thank you all for coming to our aid in this dangerous situation… Oh!?”
Right after expressing her gratitude, the noble lady exclaimed in surprise.
“Oh my goodness! How lucky I that you have come to help, and that you are exactly the ones I was looking for!”
Ignoring the flustered expressions of Gilbert and the others, the young lady elegantly stepped got off of the carriage and graciously bowed.
Seeing this, Lionel and the other knights looked slightly shaken.
“My name is Amanda Aim Beresfold. I just set out to find you all at the behest of His Highness, the Crown Prince.”
That was the name of the Crown Prince’s fiancee, as everyone knew it.
“Lady Amanda, I’m relieved to see you safe. So…, you were looking for us?”
Lionel asked, stepping forward, and Amanda smiled gently.
“I was asked by His Highness to deliver a letter to you.”
Amanda paused, then looked carefully, one by one, at each of the knights who had come to her aid, looking at the blackened shields with a slightly sad expression.
“Everyone, if you continue to the Royal Capital like this, one wrong move and you might be labeled as rebels and be arrested.”
Hearing this, everyone present held their breath.
Indeed, although they were marching to exterminate the undead magical beasts, they were still an armed group.
“Therefore, this can also serve as a righteous justification for protecting everyone.”
With a somewhat proud look on her face, Amanda took out a sealed letter and handed it to Lionel.
