45. Stormy weather in the north (1)
In the pouring rain, five carriages and twenty horsemen make their way toward the Dukedom of Ziemeld.
Half of the private soldiers and the clergy stayed behind in the Kelvim territory for self-defense, and at sir Lionel’s suggestion, we, Mr. Dolph party, the mercenaries, and the clergy, would head out under the guise of a volunteer force under Lord Lionel’s command
Since we acted without the permission of the Duke of Ziemeld and based solely on the testimony of the injured knight, this was apparently just an excuse to prevent the fact that we had dispatched territorial forces in the event of an emergency from becoming a political issue between the territories.
And so, after two days or so of additional preparations, we left the city.
I was amazed at the speed of judgment and action of these people who are used to fighting.
To be honest, I was worried about being a burden and considered staying behind in the town of Kelvim. However, I was told that there was a lot of work involved with the march that required non-combatants, so I decided to accompany Mr. Dolph and the others.
As it turns out, there are indeed many things to do, such as preparing the camp, preparing meals, washing clothes, repairing armor, managing food supplies, etc. The more I looked, the more I realized that there were many more things I could do.
In that case, if there was anything I could do to be of any help, it’s true that I wanted to be by Gilbert’s side and everyone else’s.
Those who are traveling on horseback get wet and cold from the rain, so Barbara and I sew simple coats for them to change into while we are on the move.
At the edge of my field of vision, Gilbert was making something again.
“Gilbert, what are you making this time?”
“If I tell you now, it won’t be a surprise. ……!”
Mrs. Barbara giggles. Even the clergymen riding in the carriage seem to be enjoying himself.
Mr. Dolph and Mrs. Barbara’s policy is that “even in serious situations, it’s best to laugh and spend time together,” so the atmosphere inside the carriage is always like this.
In between work, I also find myself touching the hair ornament he gave me. And the brooch on my chest.
The delicately carved flowers, with their beautiful wood grain pattern, have been carefully sanded and feel wonderful to the touch. The scent of the wood, the warmth of the wood, everything about it is lovely.
And above all, I think it is because I know Gilbert is working hard to make them with a concentrated look on his face.
It makes me happy, and when I have time I like to touch and look at them.
That calm atmosphere gradually turned unsettling a few days later when we entered the Ziemeld territory. The first place we arrived at was a large city, so large that it is called the northern trading center, but there were no people there, as if it had been deserted.
“I tried to find the remaining residents and talk to them, but it seems like there’s no end to the number of those who have evacuated…”
A private soldier who had gone out to gather information came back.
“Well, well, I can see that thing. ……”*
Gilbert muttered in a stunned voice. I, along with everyone else present, were all silent, looking in the same direction.
I’m not sure how far it is from here. To the south of the direction of the capital of the Ziemeld territory, in the middle of the forest, I can see a huge wall of red light. The red doesn’t fit in with the landscape, and it’s extremely eerie.
“Oh, that’s a sorcerer’s barrier. It’s completely different from a priest’s barrier.”
“A sorcerer’s ……”
I was surprised at Mr Dolph’s words, it was my first time hearing it, Barbara added,
“I told you before that sorcerers and wizards are a bit different, right? A sorcerer doesn’t use the goddess’s blessing, they use magical energy to manifest magic.”
Then, the priest of the Great Church of the West who was accompanying us – his name was Mr. Sydney – explained further.
“Magic power is something that all creatures in this world are born with to a greater or lesser degree. Among them, in particular, there are beasts that have been transformed with particularly powerful magical powers called magical beasts, and in the case of people, those who can use it as magic are called sorcerers.”
“There are far fewer Sorcerers than clerics, so most of them end up becoming court magicians.”
“There are even fewer Sorcerers…!”
Priest Sidney looked somewhat gloomy, even as he mixed in some jokey remarks.
“they must’ve thought the clergy would never cooperate with the capture of undead beasts. So I see, you used a sorcerer’s barrier…….”
“Ziemeld was a nation until just a hundred years ago, so it’s not surprising that there are still sorcerers serving it.”
Mr. Dolph also looks somewhat gloomy.
“But can a human sorcerer maintain such a large ward ……? I’ve heard that there is a limit to the magical power that resides within a person.”
Sir Lionel, who asked the question, also had a difficult look on his face.
“Sometimes magicians do things that are out of character.”
Priest Sydney muttered with a sad look on his face.
Soon, several knights carrying Ziemeld’s shield arrived along with the members of the private army who had been ahead of us.
“Oh, thank goodness ……! We had feared it would take too long to return to the city of Kelvim to report the news. I see that you all came!…But why?”
Running up to us with a somewhat haggard look on his face was a member of the private army who had come as a messenger on Count Kelvim’s orders a few days ago.
When Sir Lionel explained what had happened, the knights of Ziemeld who had accompanied him knelt down on the spot.
“We are no longer in a position where we can claim to be loyal to our lord. That ward has reached its limits. Please help us. ……!”
His voice was desperate and his expression tired.
Sir Lionel nodded strongly with a grim expression on his face. Then he hurriedly started to move toward the red ward.
