Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 21. self-contradiction

 Emily was depressed.

–In the end, I didn’t get a chance to play a part at all… ……

She thought about this as she gazed blankly out of the carriage window at the scenery of the royal city.

When she heard the news of the appearance of undead monsters in the northeastern part of the royal capital, her excitement, at what she had been expecting as a golden opportunity to be praised for her hard work, suddenly sank.*

Because she had no time to change out of her beautiful dress, she was taken in the most luxurious carriage in the country. However, her mood was still not bright.

–I was very happy to see the king, though. But we didn’t get to talk much. ……

The royal carriage used this time was a large one that can accommodate eight people and is divided into front and back by a partition. Emily was placed in the seat on the side next to his attendants. She didn’t have as much time to interact with the King as she had hoped, and only received a few compliments.

–This is not as fun as I thought it would be. Ah, how I wish I could go back to the days when I was on the battlefield.

She looked at the sky in the distance.

Even the royal capital was, for Emily, a place to aspire to. Compared to when she was a child,  born in a boring provincial territory with nothing to offer, or the time when she was an apprentice cleric, she was in a place she could never have imagined. At first, she was thrilled to spend time at the royal palace, where she was allowed to wear the most beautiful dresses she had ever seen.

But, within three days, she’d begun to think that it was more boring than she had imagined.

–There’s no point in wearing a pretty dress if no one compliments it.

Elliott and the other knights are all busy with their own daily schedules of reports, meetings, preparations, training, etc., so they barely had time to spend with her. No matter how nicely she dressed up, It wasn’t enjoyable, being in an environment where there was no one to look at and praise her.

When she was on the battlefield, after every battle against the undead immortal beasts, everyone praised her for her hard work, there were always many people around her, and every day was fulfilling, and Emily was happy.

Alone in the quiet carriage, Emily imagines.

What if this carriage was attacked by an immortal beast, the undead? What if the king is injured by it? If she were to save  the king, healed his wounds, and purified him, then surely everyone would praise and thank her. She indulged in such fantasies.

“Welcome back, Lady Emily.”

When she arrived at the palace, she was greeted by a beautifully dressed young noblewoman. She is a year older than Emily and is the next Duchess. She was to tutor Emily every day in the art of ladylike behavior.

“Ah, Marianne-san, um, today, we are going to start our lady education… right?”

“Yes, let’s do our best.”

Marianne smiled and was kind and gentle even to Emily, who was of commoner origin. Emily had expected to be looked down upon or ridiculed, so this was unexpected, but at the same time, she also didn’t like being around her.

If Emily were to marry Elliot, she would become a countess, and so she needs to be educated as a proper lady. She understands that, and she is blessed that Marianne, who is in charge of her education, is gentle and kind.

–But she never praises me for anything.

She never reprimanded or sarcastically criticized Emily, who had no clue about anything due to her commoner origins, but always warmly encouraged her with a soft smile. At first, she was relieved by this, but soon after, it gradually became depressing.

For Emily, the manners and etiquette of the nobility are difficult because there are so many things she doesn’t understand. The fact that she couldn’t do it or remember it no matter how many times she tried only made her feel inferior, and it was no fun at all. Even the content of what she’s learning is extremely boring.

“It’s okay, you can do it.”

“Let’s do our best.”

“Now, don’t give up, let’s try again.”

Emily, who keeps making mistakes, continues to receive such kind words from Marianne. Marianne’s kindness never allowed her to run away from the never-ending, dreadful, unenjoyable time.

──If only this woman would be mean or got angry with me. Then I’d have Elliot comfort me.

She never said it out loud, but she even thought that.

On the way to the room where she was to receive her ladyship lessons, Marianne stopped.

Beyond one of the palace’s many corridors, she sees a young man with a hint of childishness could be seen walking along with several attendants.

“Lady Emily, you can just imitate me.”

Marianne whispered, then straightens her back and adjusts her posture, tilting her head slightly to look down toward the corridor where he or she is walking. Emily, although unfamiliar with this, followed suit. All the servants and nobles around her did the same, so she could guess who it was without seeing their faces.

─ ─ Ah, the prince.  That guy is also something ……. Huh ……?

When the person walked away and the moment of silence ended, and Marianne looked up, Emily was surprised by the expression on her face.

She looked at the prince as he walked away, her smile fading, her eyes cold. There seemed to be even a hint of contempt in her eyes.

Once they arrived at their intended room and were alone, Emily boldly asked Marianne,

“Hey, you know,…… do you also dislike that guy, or something, Miss Marianne?”

Marianne’s eyes widened in surprise, and after a quick glance around, she broke into a smile.

“lady Emily, if someone were to hear us, it would be utterly shameful. Please be careful. But…”

After saying this, even though no one was in the room, she brought her face close to Emily’s, covered her mouth with a fan, and whispered to her as if she was telling her a secret.

“I won’t deny it. You know what they call him, a disgrace. You must not speak of it to anyone.”*

Emily nodded repeatedly to Marianne, who kept insisting. Seeing this, Marianne smiled in a way shr had never seen her smile before, a very cold smile. She looked somewhat amused. So Emily smiled back.

 – this is good. She’s got this kind of side to her, too.

For the first time, Emily began to like Marianne a little.
