Chapter 24: Amusement Park Date (Tentative) ②

“Huh, so this is a haunted house. Kinda looks like an old hospital. Cracked walls, scattered stones… I can really see how much effort the prop and set designers put in! Wait, this isn’t Styrofoam? They actually used real granite? That’s some serious attention to detail! All these little elements create realism and immersion. I totally get it—having worked backstage myself.”
It was my first haunted house experience, and I was having a great time.
The structure, modeled after an abandoned hospital, was packed with details that showed the craftsmen’s dedication—it was fascinating to look around and never got boring.
Since I’ve helped with building sets and props for plays, dramas, and movies before, I love checking out stuff like this.
“The lighting—its brightness and color—and the way it’s arranged, really help bring out the mood. It’s all so well done.”
Meanwhile, Suzu-chan continued to use me as a human shield as we moved forward.
“Uuugh…”
“Suzu-chan, are you okay? Want to head back? We can still bail, you know?”
“……(shakes head)”
I pointed toward the emergency exit, but Suzu-chan shook her head.
Still, it was hard to tell whether she was refusing because she genuinely wanted to continue, or if she was just paralyzed with fear. She was trembling so much, it was difficult to read.
(Why is she being so stubborn about this…? Is something going on?)
“Oooooh~ I curse yoooouuu~!”
“KYAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”
As we continued walking, a woman dressed in white funeral robes suddenly appeared.
Suzu-chan, behind me, screamed.
“I see, she came out from inside that wall—it must be hollow there. Her face is painted white, and her eyes are completely blacked out with eyeshadow. Her hair’s all teased up to look messy, and the costume’s been distressed to look dirty… Yep, really well done! I’ve done Halloween makeup before, but this feels more like special effects makeup. Hmm, it’s kind of dark and hard to see… Excuse me, would it be okay if I took a closer look?”
“Ah… um… P-please don’t stare at me like that!”
The woman blushed and hurried away, flustered.
“Ahhh, she left. I wanted to take a better look.”
“Uh, Go-kun… You’re not scared of that ghost…?”
“Nope, not at all. I mean, this is basically a ghost exhibit, right? I’m just going around admiring how well everything is made.”
“Th-that’s wrong! This is not a place to appreciate like an art museum!”
Suzu-chan suddenly raised her voice more than usual.
She looked at me like she’d just witnessed something completely unbelievable.
“Then how are you supposed to enjoy it?”
“You’re supposed to get scared while going through it!!”
“Huh? But… why would anyone want to do that?”
“I-I don’t know either!”
Suzu-chan pouted and turned away in a huff.
(She’s so stubborn… but it’s kinda cute.)
“Oh right, earlier you asked me if I wasn’t scared—but does that mean you are, Suzu-chan?”
“I-I’m not scared either. I was just… worried about you, Go-kun…”
“GET OUTTTTT!!”
“GYAAAAAAAHHHH!!”
As we were talking, another ghost appeared.
Suzu-chan jumped so hard—I mean, she’s clearly terrified, right?
“This one’s different from the last ghost. Mind if I take a closer look?”
“Oh, you’re the guy they mentioned earlier… Sorry, I need to go prep for the next scare…”
“Ahh, she’s gone already… Suzu-chan, if you’re scared, you can hold onto me, okay?”
“…(nod nod)”
Suzu-chan silently nodded at my offer.
And just like that, we continued: I enjoyed myself, while Suzu-chan kept getting scared.

“Thanks for coming through! How was it?”
“I had a lot of fun, but…”
After a long and winding path, we finally reached the exit—where the cheerful haunted house employee from earlier was waiting for us.
“Wow, your girlfriend looks totally shaken up.”
“Yeah. I think what really scared her was that long-haired woman at the end who kept yelling, ‘Don’t touch each other… stay apart… stay apart…’ and chased us. Honestly, even I got kinda freaked out by that.”
Near the end, a woman with long, perfectly groomed black hair—not frizzy or messy like the others—started chasing us from a distance.
She had an unsettling presence, so I grabbed Suzu-chan’s hand and ran.
“Huh? Wait… we don’t have a ghost like that at the end of the course…”
“…Eh?”
“…What?”
An uneasy silence fell between us.
Wait… could that have been… real?
“D-Don’t tell me that was a real ghost!? Oh no, m-my legs…!”
“Suzu-chan, are you okay!?”
Suzu-chan collapsed on the ground, her legs giving out from under her.
She must’ve been truly terrified.
“Sorry—excuse me for a moment.”
I gave her a quick warning before sliding my arms under her back and knees, lifting her up.
“W-w-what are you doing!? I’m tall, and heavy too!!”
I carried Suzu-chan in a princess carry.
“I figured resting on a bench would be better than sitting on the ground. And you’re not heavy at all, so don’t worry—I won’t drop you. I might not look it, but I actually train, you know? Carrying one girl is nothing.”
“M-m-m-me, getting a princess carry…?! H-h-h-h-h…”
(She’s still in shock, huh… Her face was pale before, but now it’s totally red, and she feels a little warm too.)
“You probably don’t want me touching you, huh? I’m sorry… just bear with it a little longer, okay?”
“T-that’s not… kyaa…”
Suzu-chan tried to deny it and looked up at me—but quickly lowered her gaze and went quiet again.
(I mean, of course she wouldn’t want someone like me carrying her… I feel really bad, but given the situation, this is the best option.)
Right now, I’m playing the part of her boyfriend. If I were her boyfriend, I’d probably do the same.
As I walked with her in my arms, I felt all the eyes around us.
It’s not like I didn’t notice… but what mattered most right now was Suzu-chan.
And so, despite the stares from the crowd, I carried Suzu-chan over to the bench.
