Chapter 16: [Former Family Side] Someone Else’s Problem – [Reina] [Ichika]

In the president’s office of the Amagasaki Agency—

“What is the meaning of this!?”

Reina screamed in a shrill voice, her eyes wide as she stared at the news article online.

“Mutsuki was caught underage drinking?! I gave her permission to have more freedom, but to think it would lead to something like this! That child was never the brightest, but this… this is beyond expectations!”

Despite being her mother, Reina had no real grasp of what was going on with Mutsuki. She couldn’t foresee the consequences of her own words and decisions.

“Yuki, how much is the damage going to cost us?”

As the president of the agency, Reina directed this question at her secretary, Yuki, regarding the fallout from Mutsuki’s scandal.

“Yes. The damage includes a loss of public image due to underage drinking, breach of contract penalties for being dropped from commercials, and the cancellation of upcoming concerts. With a suspension of activities until things cool down and no future income to expect during that period, the total comes to over 100 million yen.”

“O–over 100 million yen!? Do you know how many cruise vacations I could take with that, how much designer furniture and luxury goods I could buy…!?”

Reina rolled her eyes back in shock at the figure. Her teeth clenched, and veins popped in her forehead.

(Is she seriously only thinking about her own money, not the future of her own talent? And she’s her daughter, for crying out loud!)

Yuki was utterly disappointed in Reina, who had completely forgotten her role as both agency president and a mother, thinking only about her personal financial loss.

“Well… I still have plenty of daughters besides that one. Now that it’s come to this, I’ll just have to make them work even harder to bring in money.”

To Reina, even her own daughters were nothing more than pawns to generate income.

“So the foolish little sister finally messed up. But it’s not something you need to worry about—she’s responsible for her own actions.”

“No, a talent’s scandal is also the manager’s responsibility. Still, hearing you say that makes me feel a little better. Thank you, Ichika-san.”

Rima Harima, the manager, was accompanying the actor Ichika to a work site.

The two had just finished a meeting for Ichika’s next project and were speaking afterward.

“By the way, how is she now?”

“Yes. Mutsuki-san has become completely withdrawn due to the cyberbullying and public backlash. She’s not responding to any of my messages. I got so worried I went to her door, but she just kept muttering something to herself… she’s in no condition to be seen in public.”

“For a girl whose only strengths were her energy and sass, that’s pretty serious… But I can’t just worry about her either. So—do you have the materials for my next role?”

Ichika’s concern for Mutsuki lasted only a moment before she immediately switched focus to herself, clearly reflecting the kind of relationship they had as sisters.

“Ah… yes, here they are.”

Rima handed over the documents she had received from the director.

“What, this is all?”

Ichika looked puzzled as she accepted the papers and questioned Rima.

“? Yes, this is all the director gave me.”

“What is the meaning of this? Normally, I’d receive a much thicker dossier. It should include each character’s emotions, recommended activities to experience for building the role, the tone and gestures for lines, and even specific expressions. This only has basic character settings.”

“Um… this is about the standard. You’re supposed to read the script carefully, reflect on it yourself, and fine-tune things with the director on set…”

“There’s no way I’m doing such tedious work. An actor’s job is to follow the materials and perform as instructed. Isn’t that right? I see. Then the full materials must not be finished yet. Request them from the director before we begin filming.”

“U–understood…”

(Is there really such a thing as that kind of detailed material? When I supported other actors in the past, I never saw anything like that… But if Ichika-san says it exists, then I guess it must. I’ll ask about it later.)

Rima was confused because what Ichika had described was something she had never heard of before.

However, because Ichika had a reputation for being serious and meticulous, Rima believed her without question.

What neither of them knew was that those detailed materials had always been created by Go-kun.

Ichika, unaware of this fact, would soon head to the set completely unprepared—confident that the materials would arrive—though that’s a story for a little later.
