Chapter 92: Bronze

I rushed back together with Brittany, but as expected, the seventh match had already ended.

The result was a victory for Thread, and Velvet looked quite frustrated.

“Ugh, I’m really frustrated! I even increased my sword training time, but I couldn’t land a single hit. I thought he looked different, but he got way too strong!”

“You’ve become much stronger too, my lady. It’s just… you had a bad matchup,”

Donnie said gently.

While Velvet and Donnie spoke, Thread bowed deeply and respectfully. He had always been loyal, but after evolving into a Wight Paladin, he seemed to carry an air of nobility.

His appearance might be part of it, but the fact that he could now function in broad daylight was a big factor. Under the sun, his undead vibe dropped by about 50%.

…Though, apparently, his combat strength also drops by about 50% in sunlight.

And finally, the last match of the first round.

Naturally, the remaining matchup was Lime versus Yui.

“Welcome back, Sato. Up next is my personal pick for tournament winner—Lime.”

Sheila said.

“Not Yui, but Lime? Are you really that wary of Lime?”

“Yes. After all, he evolved from a Dark Slime.”

Just like Sheila said, Lime had evolved, similar to Mash.

But this time, he didn’t evolve by eating a magic core—he evolved after eating some copper ore that Rozzo brought back.

His appearance had also changed from the dark look of a Dark Slime to a shiny copper-like sheen.

Neither Sheila nor Ren’s group had seen this type before, so I took the liberty of naming it a “Bronze Slime.”

Somehow, the Dark Slime seemed more powerful, but Bronze Slime’s hardness had increased, so I figured it was definitely stronger now.

Judging by this, if we gave him a bunch of silver ore, he might evolve into a Silver Slime. But unlike copper, silver ore is a bit expensive, so it’s not something we can afford right now.

“He just evolved the other day, and we haven’t seen him in action much. Still… can evolving from Dark to Bronze Slime really make that big of a difference? Aside from the color, he doesn’t seem all that different.”

I wondered.

“I’ve never heard of a Bronze Slime either, so I don’t know for sure. But if it’s Lime, I’m sure he’ll exceed expectations. I want to observe him closely before I have to face him.”

Just like when she fought Brittany, Sheila was hyper-focused on Lime.

More than anything, what excited me was her confident remark—“before I face Lime”—as if she had no doubt she’d beat Mika. I didn’t say it out loud, but it made me even more eager to watch the match.

“Mr. Lime, I look forward to our match. I’m sorry, but I’ll be ending this quickly.”

Yui said politely.

“Heh, you’d better be careful. That slime isn’t ordinary. Let your guard down and you’ll be in trouble.”

Donnie warned with a chuckle.

Yui didn’t seem to get it and looked at Donnie like he was weird as she took her position.

Yui’s weapon was a rare staff, and it looked like she was going to use it for melee combat.

Since she was a healer, she probably had to equip a staff at all times, and that’s likely why she’d learned staff techniques.

“All right, are you both ready? —Begin!”

At the signal, Yui launched her attack… but Lime disappeared in an instant.

The ability to vanish even in daylight was truly powerful.

“What?! He disappeared…? Ow! H-He’s somewhere around here!?”

Yui clearly lost sight of Lime and frantically scanned her surroundings, but couldn’t find him.

Just like when he fought Donnie, Lime had turned nearly invisible and was moving at high speed using a spring-like motion.

It was the kind of surprise technique that even a seasoned warrior like Donnie couldn’t handle. Naturally, Yui had no chance of seeing through it and ended up taking three solid hits before she even realized what happened.

After watching Ren, Shoji, and Mika display their strength, I honestly thought Yui might give Lime some trouble—but this was a total victory.

“Winner: Lime. See? I told you. Let your guard down and you’ll regret it.”

“…No way. He’s too strong—I still don’t even understand what just happened.”

Yui was still frozen in place, stunned.

Meanwhile, Lime came happily hopping over to me.

“Good job, Lime. You were seriously strong out there.”

“It looks like Lime might be the toughest opponent I’ll face on my way to the finals. I won’t lose, though.”

Sheila said, determined.

Even with the lighthearted mood, both Sheila and Lime were brimming with competitive fire.

I didn’t know who to root for. Honestly, I didn’t want either of them to lose.

“First, you both need to win your next matches. Sheila, you’re up against Mika. Lime, your opponent is Thread. Both are strong.”

I reminded them.

“Right. I definitely won’t lose!”

Sheila replied, fired up.

Lime, too, seemed fully motivated, trembling with anticipation.

And with that, all first-round matches were complete.

The eight advancing competitors were: Ren, Lois, Rozzo, Mash, Mika, Sheila, Thread, and Lime.

Naturally, all of them were strong, and it was impossible to predict who would win.

Especially surprising was the fact that the heroes Shoji and Yui both lost in the first round. Most people probably never saw that coming.

And the fact that both of them were defeated by my familiars… yeah, I’m feeling pretty proud right now.
