Chapter 6: What You Can Buy

…Hmm. There are so many interesting monsters, but the prices are ridiculously high.

Even the cheapest of the dragon-type monsters, the Wyvern, costs 500,000 NP.

Considering I only have 500 NP on hand right now, they’re completely out of my reach.

That said, the cheapest monsters overall, Goblins and Slimes, are priced at 500 NP—just within my budget. Slimes, in particular, seem like they could be kept as pets, so buying one might be worth considering.

As for upgrading abilities, those are also quite pricey, with a base stat increase of +1 costing 100 NP.

Judging by the system, it seems like the cost will increase as stats improve, making it a bit challenging to grow stronger.

And then there’s magic and enhancing the [Otherworldly Farming] skill.

For example, acquiring beginner magic like [Fireball] costs 1,000 NP.

If you think of it as the equivalent of about 10,000 yen (roughly $100), it’s not entirely unaffordable, but that’ll have to wait until I’ve got more NP to spare.

As for skill upgrades, there are way more options than I expected.

The basics include Field Expansion, Field Quality, Growth Speed, and Seed Variety, all of which are currently at Level 1.

Using NP to level them up will probably make the fields larger and better.

There are also handy features like Automatic Watering, Automatic Planting, and Automatic Harvesting.

Additionally, there are options for Pest Control and Beast Control. However, these seem significantly more expensive than the basic upgrades.

If I could buy them all, I’d eventually be able to produce crops just by letting the system run on its own, but that might end up being even later than getting a dragon as an ally.

Still… for now, I’d rather do the farming myself.

Once my fields get larger, I might start finding it tedious, but right now, I’m determined to work with my own hands.

With that settled, I decided to buy some vegetable seeds from the tablet.

There are currently only three types of crops available for purchase.

Since I’ve never heard of these vegetables before, they’re likely unique to this world.

I don’t recognize them, so I decided to pick one at random and try growing it.

Name: Crackdraff Seedling

Effect: Produces Crackdraff when planted in the field.

Cost: 3 NP

I have no idea what Crackdraff is, but I’ll just have to grow it and find out.

Incidentally, common vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, and daikon radishes are also available, but since they’re categorized as Japanese goods, they’re quite expensive—90 NP per seedling.

With only 500 NP on hand, buying them is tough, but it might be worth getting just one tomato plant.

I’m curious about the difference in selling prices between Crackdraff and tomatoes, and I’d like to compare their tastes as well.

Tomatoes are versatile in cooking, and while I don’t know how many tomatoes I’ll get from one plant, they won’t go to waste.

With that in mind, I purchased ten Crackdraff seedlings and one tomato seedling.

After completing the purchase, the screen displayed a “Purchase Complete” message, and my NP balance dropped from 500 to 380.

I was wondering how and when the items would arrive when suddenly, a paper bag appeared with a thud next to the well and the large box that had materialized alongside my field.

“Are those the seeds I bought…?”

I muttered to myself as I approached the bag to check it out.

Sure enough, the bag contained the seedlings I’d purchased—ten Crackdraff seedlings and one tomato seedling, neatly packaged.

I have no idea how this system works, but immediate delivery is definitely convenient.

Without further ado, I’ll get these planted and watered, then keep an eye on how they grow.

I finished planting all the seedlings and watering them.

With 11 seedlings, I’ve used up about a quarter of the field, meaning the current field size can hold approximately 40 plants.

Since I’ve never grown vegetables before, I don’t know how many I’ll be able to harvest, but if all goes well, I should be able to get at least 11 vegetables.

If I can sell them for 1 NP each, that’s a total of 11 NP…

At that rate, it’s a massive deficit, but as long as I can grow them successfully, I shouldn’t actually lose money.

Even though I’ve only just planted and watered them, I’m already excited to see them grow.

Plus, over three-quarters of the field is still empty.

I could buy and plant more seedlings today since there’s still time, but I’ll save that for tomorrow.

Planting seeds daily will help stagger the harvest times.

Planting and watering are still relatively easy tasks, but harvesting will probably be quite labor-intensive.

With that in mind, I decided to space out the planting and spend the rest of the day exploring the nearby area at a leisurely pace.

After nodding in acknowledgment to Sheila, who had been watching over my farming work the entire time, I set off.

For today… maybe I’ll take a walk and check out the forested hill behind the house.
