Chapter 59: Moon Raven
After much deliberation, based on Sheila’s advice, I decided to make the Moon Raven my familiar.
Among the three options—Deep Chameleon for 12,000 NP, Spike Spider for 9,000 NP, and Moon Raven for 15,000 NP—the Moon Raven was significantly more expensive. However, considering its benefits, I decided to go ahead with the purchase.
By the way, there were also skill upgrades available for repelling pests, vermin, and birds, but since they required a whopping 200,000 NP, I immediately ruled them out.
Though this decision nearly depleted my saved NP, I had no regrets.
“Sato-san, the Moon Raven has arrived!”
Hearing Sheila’s voice from outside, I stepped out to see my newly acquired familiar.
What I saw the moment I stepped outside was—a jet-black body.
It was slightly larger than me and looked nothing short of incredible.
Its appearance resembled a mix between a raven and a hawk.
“So, this is a Moon Raven… It looks amazing.”
“I’m more surprised that it isn’t attacking us.”
“Are wild Moon Ravens aggressive?”
“Not exactly aggressive, but they’re highly territorial. If this one recognizes this area as its territory, it should start hunting the pest birds soon.”
I see. That sounds promising.
Excited, I walked toward the Moon Raven, but before I could reach it, it hopped toward me instead.
Rather than flying, it moved with a bouncing gait until it stood in front of me—then it rubbed its head against me, as if seeking affection.
…It’s incredibly cute.
Completely won over, I gently patted its head.
“I’ve already decided on a name. From today onward, I’ll call you Crow. Nice to meet you.”
“Caw!”
Unlike Lime, Mash, and Thread—who couldn’t make sounds—Crow responded to me with its voice.
It was adorable, and I already felt I had made the right decision.
“It’s surprisingly friendly. Perhaps it sees you as its parent?”
“I wonder… At the very least, it doesn’t see me as an enemy, which is a relief.”
After playing around with Crow for a bit, I explained what I wanted it to do.
I had assumed I’d need to demonstrate tasks for it to understand, but Crow seemed to grasp everything through verbal instructions alone.
With a powerful flap of its wings, it soared high into the sky and began patrolling the area around the villa.
Ideally, I wanted it to stay on the ground and only chase off pest birds when necessary… but since it had already taken flight, I couldn’t call it back now.
Its intelligence and enthusiasm were wonderful, but I’d have to make sure it didn’t overwork itself.
“It’s already on patrol. Seems to have a great memory—this was a fantastic choice, wasn’t it?”
“All thanks to your recommendation, Sheila. I truly appreciate it.”
“No need to thank me. More importantly, are you planning to start planting other crops today?”
“Yes. I’ll gradually switch over to different crops. And as soon as I save up enough currency, I plan to get a Spike Spider as my next familiar.”
“First birds, then insects—seems like the perfect order.”
With Sheila’s approval, I decided to proceed in this order.
If these measures effectively kept pests and birds at bay, great. If not, I’d approach the problem with an open mind.
Now, I wondered—would Crow need some kind of shelter?
I’d ask once it landed, but for now, I needed to start planting Moaful seedlings.
