Chapter 57: Three Different Approaches
About two weeks have passed since the first harvest of Moaful.
These past two weeks have been intense—probably the busiest ones for both me and Sheila.
Before explaining what happened, let’s start with the selling prices of Sea astera and Brightvoice.
The pinkish-colored Sea astera takes six days to mature and yields a profit of 45 NP.
However, considering it takes a day longer to grow than Moaful but only earns 5 NP more, it lacks appeal.
Its small size, similar to chili peppers, makes harvesting easy, but for now, Moaful seems like the better choice.
And then there’s Brightvoice, which is problematic in many ways.
It also takes six days to mature, but its profit is only 38 NP, making it less profitable than Moaful.
On top of that, its spiky, chestnut-like exterior makes harvesting difficult—definitely a troublesome crop.
However, both Moaful and Sea astera are not root vegetables, which has led to significant damage from pests and birds.
The reason Sheila and I were so busy these past two weeks was due to our continuous battle against these pests and birds.
We tried multiple strategies, but none were very effective.
That’s where Brightvoice’s spiky fruit structure becomes important.
Because of its spikes, it naturally repels not just birds but also insects, making it nearly immune to damage.
At first, I thought I would never grow it again, but now, with the pest problem unresolved, I’m reconsidering.
If we give up on pest control measures, Brightvoice will be the only viable crop.
“Sato… The scarecrow didn’t work either.”
As I was deep in thought, Sheila returned from outside, sounding dejected.
We had crafted a scarecrow resembling the birds that were attacking our crops, but it was ineffective.
“We tried everything we could, but no luck. It’s frustrating, but I guess we have no choice but to grow Brightvoice for now.”
“Ugh… I’m really frustrated! Everything was going so smoothly, so hitting a dead end like this feels awful.”
“I feel the same. We’ll definitely get our revenge later.”
For now, our goal is to grow Brightvoice and save up NP to recruit a monster that can act as a defense against pests and birds.
I originally wanted to increase our workforce, but this issue has to take priority.
It may not seem urgent now, but in the long run, this is a problem we’re bound to face.
If we have to deal with it eventually, it’s better to do so sooner rather than later.
“I never imagined there would be people willing to grow a crop that isn’t profitable, but I guess there’s a reason for everything.”
“I thought I’d never grow it again either. It’s frustrating how things turned out this way.”
“Hehe, we’re completely playing into someone’s strategy. It’s frustrating, but also kind of fun.”
I understand what Sheila means.
It was fun when things were going smoothly, but these past two weeks of trial and error have also been enjoyable in their own way.
Of course, it would have been even better if we had succeeded.
“Let’s use this frustration as motivation. Also, I’m thinking of getting a new tamed monster to help with pest control. Would you be willing to help me choose one?”
“Of course! I’ll start looking into potential candidates.”
“Thanks, I appreciate it.”
And so, our next course of action was set: growing Brightvoice.
Though the outcome was frustrating, that frustration made me even more determined to push forward.
Next, I’ll need to consult with Sheila and start searching for a monster that can help with pest and bird control.
If only we could use pesticides—it would solve everything instantly.
But the cost of purchasing pesticides is nearly thirty times higher than normal, making it a tough decision.
Considering all these factors, I once again realized how well-designed the system truly is.
