Chapter 4: The Villa

After roughly 30 minutes of being rocked by the carriage, we arrived safely at the king’s villa without encountering any monsters.

Although it had been described as a “small house,” it was more than spacious enough and sturdily built. As the king had mentioned, a vast grassland stretched out in front of it, and a solid mountain rose up behind the house.

Compared to the rural lifestyle I had imagined, it felt a bit wild, but the surrounding nature filled me with excitement.

“Sato-san, here is the key to the villa. And… about what we discussed earlier. Are you truly sure it’s okay for me to proceed with that?”

Sheila was referring to the conversation we had during the carriage ride—specifically, my request to relieve her of her duties as my bodyguard.

We had a proper discussion on the way here, and I was able to explain my feelings. It was also thanks to this talk that she now addressed me as “Sato-san.”

“Of course. I’ve been causing you so much trouble, Sheila-san. But as I mentioned earlier, could you continue as my bodyguard until I’ve adjusted to this world?”

“Naturally. Protecting you is my current job, after all. …Thank you very much for your consideration.”

“No need to thank me. By the way, where will you be staying, Sheila-san? Since it’s not far, will you return to the royal capital?”

“No, I was hoping to borrow one of the villa’s rooms, if that’s all right with you…”

Those words made my heart skip a beat.

To be honest, I’ve never had a romantic relationship with a woman before.

I attended an all-boys high school, which meant that by the time I entered university, I could barely hold a conversation with women. After becoming a working adult, my life was consumed by endless overtime, leaving me no time or energy for anything resembling romance.

The idea of suddenly living under the same roof as a woman was enough to make me nervous.

Ideally, I’d arrange a separate building for her, but there was nothing nearby. If she couldn’t stay here, Sheila-san would have to camp outdoors.

I hurriedly composed myself, trying to keep my nerves from showing, and responded firmly so as not to seem suspicious.

“Of course, that’s perfectly fine. It looks like there’s a second floor, so please use one of the rooms upstairs. I’ll make sure to avoid going up there as much as possible.”

“Thank you very much. I’ll gladly use one of the upstairs rooms, but please feel free to use the second floor as well. I don’t mean to be rude, but… I’m stronger than you, so I’m not worried about being attacked.”

“Ah, that’s right. I did mention my abilities to you, didn’t I? Am I really that weak?”

“…Pfft, haha… Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Based on your stats, I’d say you’re weaker than a typical child.”

Sheila burst out laughing as she recalled my stats.

It was a painful reminder of how weak I truly was, to the point where even attacking her would not be considered a threat.

While I was glad Sheila felt secure enough to sleep here, the fact that she found my weakness laughable stung a little.

Determined to at least become strong enough not to be a joke, I silently resolved to improve myself.

“I see. Well, if my weakness puts you at ease, I guess that’s fine. But please, since I’m so weak, I’m counting on you to protect me.”

“Of course. I’m deeply grateful for your thoughtfulness, Sato-san, so I’ll protect you with my life.”

“I’m counting on you.”

An older man being told that by a young woman.

It felt like the roles should be reversed, but I decided not to dwell on it.

For now, I planned to take a quick look around the villa before getting some early rest.

Reincarnating into another world was surreal, but at least I hadn’t ended up with bad people. I had a feeling I might be able to manage.

Tomorrow, I’d explore the area around the house and investigate my skill further.

If the Otherworldly Farming skill turned out to be even a little useful, that would be great… though I decided to keep my expectations low for now.
