Chapter 33: Omelette Rice
“Phew—finally done with the day’s work! The fields have gotten so much bigger since I was last here.”
“Since Velvet-san left, I think the amount of crops we’re growing has increased by about 1.5 times. But the field expansion itself is a more recent development.”
“That’s right. Thanks to Sato-san making Mash his familiar, we’ve been able to plant crops in previously unused areas of the field.”
“Oh, I see. I’ve been watching Mash up close, and it’s true—he works really hard. Not cute at all, though, but definitely a hard worker.”
Velvet-san’s comment made Mash look a bit bashful.
Mash seemed to understand our conversation perfectly and reacted accordingly. Lime and Thread also followed commands, so they probably understood too—but without expressive faces, it was hard to tell how much they comprehended.
“Mash really has been doing his best. I should reward him today.”
“A reward for Mash? Are you going to give him something to eat?”
“Yes. Mash loves vegetables, especially ones from my world. He seems incredibly happy whenever I give him some.”
“Wow! Mash eats vegetables, huh? …Mind if I try giving him some?”
“Of course. Feel free to use some of the freshly harvested vegetables.”
With my permission, Velvet-san picked up a freshly harvested tomato and handed it to Mash.
Mash took it, beamed with a huge smile, and immediately bit into it with enthusiasm.
“He actually ate it! And he looks like he’s really enjoying it.”
“Delicious food after hard work is universal—even for monsters, it seems. Let’s give him three or four more, then have our own meal.”
“Agreed. I was a little disappointed earlier about the lack of books, but now I’m starting to look forward to trying some otherworldly cuisine!”
“Leave it to me—I’ll make sure it’s worth the wait. Last time, what you had was more like ingredients than actual cooking, after all.”
“Really? I thought that ‘fried potato’ dish was amazing… but if you’re saying there’s something even better, I can’t wait!”
Last time, since Velvet-san had to return to the capital, I could only make something simple like fried potatoes. But this time, since she’s staying over, I have plenty of time.
She’s been working even harder than before for the sake of her books, so I’ll give it my all and cook something truly special.
I headed back to the villa to start preparing the meal. First step: selecting ingredients.
I decided on omelette Rice—a dish where I could put the tomatoes to good use.
I bought rice, eggs, onions, and chicken thigh meat.
There was a time when I got hooked on watching videos of “crack-open omelette rice” and made it often myself, so I’m pretty confident in my omurice skills.
…That said, my biggest fear was cooking the rice.
I’ve only ever cooked rice using a rice cooker. This would be my third attempt at cooking rice in a pot.
The last time I cooked rice in a pot was years ago, when my rice cooker broke. I only tried it three times, so my memory was a bit hazy.
Still, the rice I bought with a lot of NP couldn’t be wasted, so I carefully racked my brain for what I remembered and cautiously started cooking the rice.
I paid close attention to the amount of water and the heat, ensuring the rice didn’t boil over.
…I think it turned out okay.
The rice still needed about 15 more minutes to steam, so I couldn’t check yet. Trusting it would be fine, I moved on to preparing the omelette rice.
I finely chopped the onion, sautéed it until lightly cooked, and then added bite-sized pieces of chicken thigh to the pan.
By the time the rice finished steaming, I opened the lid to check—and it was perfectly cooked.
This was the part I had been most nervous about, so I felt relieved.
I added the cooked rice to the pan, mixed it thoroughly as I stir-fried it, and seasoned it with my homemade ketchup, salt, and pepper.
With the chicken rice finished, the last step was preparing the egg layer.
I had practiced the egg layer countless times until I mastered it, so I had no worries about this step. With practiced movements, I made a perfectly rolled omelette.
Finally, I placed the omelette on top of the shaped chicken rice—and the omelette rice was complete.
All that’s left is to make two more portions and let Sheila-san and Velvet-san experience the dramatic knife-cut reveal at the table.
“Dinner is ready. Tonight’s meal is omelette rice.”
“Omelette rice? Is that… an omelette on top?”
“It’s similar, but slightly different.”
“Ooh, this is my first time eating this dish! It smells amazing, and now I’m really hungry!”
Velvet-san gazed curiously at the omelette rice, while Sheila-san, as usual, was visibly excited in front of the food.
Seeing their expressions filled me with satisfaction, and the three of us enjoyed the food together in a lively, cheerful atmosphere.
