Chapter 32: Brimming with Enthusiasm

It’s been ten days since I made Mush my familiar. By increasing the variety of crops we cultivate, our daily harvest has significantly grown.

In these ten days, I’ve already recovered the 6,000 NP I spent on the Matango, and my current balance is 8,462 NP. At this pace, I’ve already saved enough to buy another monster.

For now, the options I’m considering are the Cat Mage, recommended by Sheila-san, or the Soil Sylph, which I personally favor.

According to Sheila-san, the Cat Mage is not only capable of using earth magic, which would be invaluable for farming, but can also wield all four elemental magics: water, fire, wind, and earth.

On the other hand, the Soil Sylph I like is a small monster, around 20 centimeters tall, that can only use earth and wind magic. While it’s less versatile and physically limited, I found it appealing in its own way. However, Sheila-san strongly recommends the Cat Mage due to its broader utility.

The problem, though, is the price.

The Soil Sylph costs 10,000 NP, whereas the Cat Mage is a whopping 30,000 NP. Even though the increased income thanks to Mush makes it possible to save quickly, 30,000 NP is still quite steep.

As I mulled over this dilemma while eating my sandwich at lunch, I heard a familiar voice in the distance. When I looked over, I saw Velvet-san climbing down from a carriage and running toward me.

“Sato! I’ve come to help again! And this time, I’m staying over—for six whole days in a row!”

Velvet-san approached with those enthusiastic words, and her beaming smile showed how much she liked this place. Her expression warmed my heart.

“I’m glad you’ve come to help again. But are you sure it’s okay for you to stay here?”

“Yes, I got proper permission from my father. I’ve finished all my work, so there’s nothing to worry about.”

“In that case, you’re more than welcome. We have rooms available, so feel free to use one.”

“Of course! I’ll use one without hesitation. Oh, and as for my compensation, I’d like two more volumes of your books.”

“Understood. In return, I expect you to work hard.”

“Of course! That’s my plan from the start. Oh, by the way, there’s a gift in the carriage—feel free to take it.”

“A gift…?”

I couldn’t even imagine what it could be. Without explaining further, Velvet-san headed into the villa, leaving me curious.

With a puzzled look, I stuffed the remainder of my sandwich into my mouth and went over to the carriage.

There, I found someone who appeared to be Velvet-san’s attendant sitting silently. He simply pointed to the cargo area at the back of the carriage.

I gave him a small bow and circled to the back to inspect this so-called “gift.”

What I found in the carriage’s cargo area was an assortment of tools: farming equipment, cooking utensils, lanterns, and other handy items. It was a treasure trove of convenience.

I had initially resolved not to rely on handouts, but these useful tools were simply too tempting. Rejecting them wasn’t an option.

I proceeded to unload all the tools from the carriage. Once I’d finished, the carriage began its journey back to the capital.

“…If you lay a hand on the princess, even if you’re from another world, you’ll pay with your life.”

“I-I won’t lay a hand on her!”

The silent attendant suddenly spoke with a menacing tone, issuing a chilling warning. I desperately assured him I had no such intentions, but he left without responding.

His deadly serious expression left me feeling both grateful for Velvet-san’s trust and wary of her perception among those around her. Resolving once more not to cross any lines, I carried Velvet-san’s gift back inside.

“Oh, Sato, how was the gift? I tried to choose practical items rather than anything overly valuable.”

“It’s incredibly helpful. If it had been something expensive, I couldn’t have accepted it, but… I’ll make good use of these.”

“Good! Feel free to use them as much as you like. After all, they’re tools to help me work comfortably too.”

“Thank you so much. As a token of my gratitude—”

“Wait, are you going to give me another book!? That wasn’t my intention at all, but… if you insist, I’ll gladly accept it.”

Before I could even say anything, Velvet-san leaned in with that assumption.

For the record, I wasn’t planning to give her any manga… but now the atmosphere made it incredibly hard to say so.

“…Actually, it’s not a book-related reward. I was trying to tell you that I’d like to treat you with some dishes from my world today and on the final day. I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.”

“Ugh… No, it’s not like I was expecting anything… Don’t worry about it.”

Velvet-san said that with her words, but her face was clearly filled with disappointment.

Since each book only costs 210 NP, and considering my current NP balance, I could afford to give her one as thanks for the tools. However, I decided against it.

“Instead, how about this? If I decide that you’ve worked harder than usual during these six days, I’ll increase your reward from two books to three.”

“Really!? I’ll give it my all!”

“I’m counting on you.”

“Leave it to me! I’ll do anything!”

Despite her earlier claim that she wasn’t expecting anything, Velvet-san was suddenly brimming with enthusiasm.

Now that Velvet-san was fired up, I figured it was time for me to get back to work for the afternoon.

“Well, I’ll be returning to the fieldwork now. Velvet-san, please feel free to take your belongings to the villa. You don’t need to work this morning, so take your time and relax—”

“No way! I’ll start working right away! The difference between two and three books is huge! I’ll drop my luggage off and get ready immediately!”

Without even listening to my suggestion, Velvet-san grabbed her belongings and ran toward the villa.

Her energy had been noticeably low earlier, so I suggested this to cheer her up a little… but it seems like I may have overdone it.

…Well, it’s not a bad thing to be motivated.

With that conclusion in mind, I headed over to Sheila-san, who was feeding Lime, to explain the situation.
