Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 30: Interaction

While Sheila and I continued chatting, the four emerged from the villa, seemingly having finished their conversation. It was faster than I expected… I hope everything went well.

As I approached, I noticed Mika looked cheerful. Seeing that their discussion had been productive without turning sour put me at ease.

“Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Sato. Thanks to you, we were able to have a proper talk!”

“That’s great to hear. So, Mika, what did you decide to do?”

“I’ve decided to keep trying a little longer with everyone! But… if things don’t work out, could I come and work here?”

“Of course. Actually, don’t wait until you need to escape—feel free to visit whenever you’d like.”

I replied.

“Thank you! Just knowing I have a place to run to makes me feel much more at ease!”

“Anytime. Running away isn’t a bad thing, after all.”

I said with a smile as I saw Mika off.

That was the best advice I could offer, coming from someone who couldn’t run away until I was completely broken. Mika waved with a smile as she left, and Ren stayed behind alone.

“Um… Sato-san, right? Thank you so much for everything this time.”

“No need to be so formal. Sato is fine, and you can speak casually. Are you, Shouji, and Yui all doing okay?”

“If you say so… I guess we were hanging on by a thread. Shouji and I mostly found it fun, but the constant life-threatening danger took its toll.”

Ren admitted.

“While Mika was the first to reach her limit this time, Ren, you should also take care not to overdo it. You’re all just ordinary people dragged into this, just like I was.”

“…You’re right. We got carried away with all the ‘Oh, brave hero!’ praise everywhere we went, but at the end of the day, we’re just regular folks. I think we’ll start by making sure we take proper breaks.”

 Ren said with a nod.

“Yes, that’s definitely for the best. And when you take a longer break, do visit. I made a simple Japanese meal for Mika, and I can prepare some here, though the variety is limited.”

I added casually.

Ren froze in surprise, his expression one of complete astonishment.

“W-wait, seriously!? The worst thing about this world is how awful the food is! If that can be improved, I’ll be super motivated!”

“Well, I can only make it occasionally since resources are tight…”

“Occasionally is good enough! Sato-san, please cook for us sometime! I’ll do anything in return!”

“If that’s the case… how about collecting magic cores for me instead?”

“Magic cores? The ones that monsters sometimes drop? I think I have one in my bag!”

Ren exclaimed, pulling out a magic core from his bag.

It was larger and darker than the one Mika had earlier, suggesting it was of higher quality.

“Yes, that’s the one. I’d appreciate it if you could gather more of those.”

“Got it! If it means eating Japanese food, I’ll collect as many as you need! For now, though, take this as thanks for helping Mika. Oh, and just call me Ren—not Ren-san!”

“Ren… okay. I’ll try, though I’m so used to adding ‘san’ that it might take some effort.”

“Effort, huh? You’re a funny one, Sato-san! Well, it’s getting dark, so we’ll head back to the capital now. We’ll visit again soon—look forward to it!”

“Of course, you’re welcome anytime.”

I replied as Ren gave a thumbs-up and hopped onto the carriage to join the others.

Being told not to use honorifics feels strange.

After years of working in a soul-crushing company, I’d gotten into the habit of addressing everyone with “san.” Back in my student days, I never used honorifics… but it feels oddly foreign now.

Still, I was relieved to have found a way to acquire magic cores. Exchanging them for Japanese meals seemed like a good arrangement. It didn’t change the fact that I needed to keep growing vegetables, but this felt like the start of a promising win-win relationship.

Calling Ren-san simply “Ren” is going to be pretty difficult for me, but I was really happy he said that.

For now, I’ll feed the magic core I just received to Thread, and then I’ll head back to the villa myself.
