Chapter 27: Tomatoes
The food in this world isn’t very tasty, so it’s possible Mika has been eating less.
Without proper meals, it’s hard to have energy, and it’s no wonder her spirits were so low.
“When I first arrived, it was too dark to see, but you’ve built such an impressive field here! And wow, you’re even growing tomatoes—amazing!”
“I wouldn’t call it amazing. It’s just that the food in this world is so bland, growing something like this is a blessing.”
“Exactly! Everything here smells strange, and the taste is weird—either too bland or filled with random, unpleasant flavors. Nothing’s really good!”
“Maybe that’s part of the reason you were feeling down. Without something to look forward to, life can feel pretty bleak.”
“…You think so?”
I brought Mika to the field and guided her straight to the tomato plants.
Yesterday, the tomatoes were green, but today they were fully ripened—vivid red and plump.
“They’re real tomatoes! …Can I eat one?”
“Of course, go ahead.”
“Thank you so much, mister. I’m digging in!”
After saying a heartfelt prayer before eating, Mika plucked one of the tomatoes and took a big bite.
“—It’s delicious! Seriously delicious. I never thought raw tomatoes could taste this good… It’s so good I could cry.”
She said she could cry, but tears were already streaming down her face.
I’d noticed the poor quality of this world’s ingredients early on. Maybe I should’ve invited the other four here sooner.
…Then again, with limited NP, it wasn’t like I could prepare meals for everyone back then. Balancing NP usage is always tricky.
“…Hey, can I have one more?”
“Of course, eat as many as you like.”
“Thank you!”
Mika ended up eating three more tomatoes, rubbing her stomach contentedly afterward.
If four tomatoes were enough to cheer her up, I’d say that’s a small price to pay.
“They were really delicious, and more than that, I feel so much better! Thank you so much!”
“We’re both people who got caught up in this otherworldly transfer. Don’t worry about it. I’m glad to see you feeling better.”
“I want to repay you somehow… Oh! There’s a slime here! Let me take it out—”
“Stop! That slime is my familiar.”
“Familiar…? You mean like your pet?”
“Something like that. It’s been loyal, and I find it quite endearing.”
“You’re growing tomatoes and keeping a slime as a pet… What kind of person are you?”
“Just an ordinary guy who got dragged into this otherworldly mess.”
I said this as I guided Mika over to Lime.
Velvet had taken a liking to it, so I figured Mika might too.
When I let her touch Lime, the cool, squishy texture seemed to win her over. Just like Velvet, she ended up hugging it.
Lime truly has a way of charming people.
“It’s so squishy and feels so nice! And it’s kind of adorable!”
“It’s not a bad slime. Please take good care of Lime too.”
“Hey, Lime, is there anything you like to eat?”
“It eats anything, really. Whether it’s food or trash, it reacts the same way to everything.”
“Huh… Can I try feeding it different things?”
“Sure, as long as Lime doesn’t seem to mind.”
With my permission, Mika began pulling various items from her backpack and feeding them to Lime.
I watched for a while before returning to my farm work.
Since Sheila wasn’t here, I had to work harder than usual.
Ideally, I’d ask Mika to lend a hand, but given she came here feeling down, I couldn’t bring myself to ask for help.
For the next hour, the sound of Mika playing with Lime became my background music as I worked.
She kept giving Lime different things to eat, but then, all of a sudden, she let out a surprised shout.
“Hey, mister! Lime is acting weird!”
Responding to Mika’s call, I immediately went to check on Lime… and sure enough, something strange was happening.
The core at the center of Lime’s body was glowing brightly, and its usually round shape was rippling and waving.
“Mika, what did you do?”
“The magic core dropped by monsters seemed to be its favorite, so I just kept feeding it all the ones I had. Then, all of a sudden, it started glowing. Did I mess something up?”
“This is my first time seeing this too, so I don’t really know. But… magic cores, huh…”
Somehow, I didn’t feel like this would be fatal.
Standing beside the anxious Mika, I watched Lime’s glowing body. After about five minutes, the core’s radiance started to fade.
It also seemed like Lime’s body color had grown darker.
Maybe eating the magic cores caused some kind of transformation.
“Lime, are you okay?”
When I called out, Lime started bouncing up and down as usual, with its familiar soft “boing-boing” movements.
In fact, it seemed more energetic than ever, and aside from its darker color, there didn’t appear to be any other changes.
“Did its body color change? Maybe I overfed it with the magic cores?”
“I’m not sure… but until Sheila returns, don’t give it anything else, okay?”
“Got it. Lime, no more snacks for you.”
Lime, as if begging, clung to Mika’s feet, but we couldn’t risk feeding it again.
I’d have to ask Sheila about what happened later. For now, Lime seemed fine, so I decided to return to my farm work.
