Chapter 26: Escape

It’s been a week since I made Thread my familiar.

In that time, the plain in front of the villa has transformed significantly, thanks to Thread. A farm the size of my skill-generated field has been created.

For now, though, I’m already fully occupied with the skill-generated field, so I haven’t been able to touch this new farmland. But with enough hands, we could start farming there anytime.

By the way, it’s difficult to have Thread do farming tasks. Perhaps it’s a characteristic of undead creatures, but they seem capable of only one task at a time.

For example, when I asked Thread to clear the land, it could only perform that task. Similarly, when I instructed it to plant seedlings, it could only do that. After planting, I asked it to water the seedlings, but it couldn’t carry out the second command.

If Thread could move during the day and I were able to give it detailed instructions, there wouldn’t be any major issues. However, Thread can only act at night when I can’t give close supervision, which makes this a significant limitation.

There was even a suggestion for Sheila and me to reverse our day-night cycles to match Thread’s, but given the lack of proper lighting in this area, working at night is simply not realistic and would be highly inefficient.

Still, despite these weaknesses—being limited to night-time activity and only capable of one task at a time—Thread has been more than worth its cost of 3,000 NP. It doesn’t need food either, so making it my familiar was absolutely the right choice.

Since yesterday, I’ve paused the clearing work and assigned Thread to the more demanding task of harvesting. I expect its importance to grow even more from now on.

Eventually, I’d like to create an undead team: one group for planting, another for watering, and another for harvesting. With distinct roles, I’d be able to run things efficiently. However…

For now, that feels too complicated, so I plan to stick with just Thread and hold off on purchasing any additional undead creatures.

With those thoughts in mind, I yawned lightly and headed to the living room to check on things as part of my morning routine.

There, I found Sheila and an unfamiliar woman.

For a moment, I thought it might be Lady Velvet, but no—it was someone else entirely…

Wait, I do know her.

She’s one of the heroes who reincarnated with me.

She’s got a gal-like vibe, and I’m pretty sure her name is Mika.

Since she was dressed like an adventurer, I didn’t recognize her immediately, especially since I’d just woken up.

“Um… You’re one of the people who reincarnated with me, right? Did you come all the way out here because you needed something from me?”

“… It’s hard.”

“Pardon? What did you just say?”

“I said hard! I thought being a hero would be glamorous, but instead, I’m stuck in these dark dungeons, fighting monsters nonstop! It’s exhausting, smelly, dark, and terrifying—it’s just hard!“

Mika poured out her frustrations, but I still had no idea why she came here.

Does she want to quit being a hero and live a quiet life in the countryside like me?

Not knowing how to respond, I stood there confused, when Sheila returned from the kitchen with breakfast.

“Oh, good morning, Sato. This person here is a hero, isn’t she? I noticed her wandering around the villa early this morning, so I invited her in… I hope that was alright?”

“Yes, it’s fine. But… do you know why she came here?”

“She told me she escaped because she didn’t want to deal with dungeon crawling anymore. Honestly, it feels a little wasteful to abandon such a gift—being granted the powers of a hero and being able to conquer dungeons.”

Sheila’s eyes as she looked at Mika seemed a bit cold.

For someone like Sheila, who spent years performing menial tasks while dreaming of combat roles, the title of “hero” must feel like a dream come true.

But as someone who also transferred to this world, I could deeply empathize with Mika’s desire to run away.

She’s still a teenager, after all.

No matter how much power she’s been given, fighting as a hero must be emotionally overwhelming for someone her age.

“Please don’t be too harsh on her. The world we came from is completely different from this one. Adjusting isn’t easy.”

“Oh, I’m not being harsh. If anything, I’m grateful. If I hadn’t been sidelined back then, I wouldn’t be here working alongside you now.”

Sheila replied with a smile.

Her smile warmed my heart.

But I couldn’t get too distracted. Right now, I needed to focus on Mika.

“So, Mika… Am I right in understanding that you came to this villa because you didn’t want to deal with dungeon crawling anymore?”

“… Yeah, that’s right.”

“Alright. Just to confirm, have you told anyone else that you came here?”

“No, I haven’t… and I can’t tell them.”

It seems Mika doesn’t want anyone to know she’s here…

But the other heroes—like Ren and the others—must be worried about her. At the very least, we should let them know she’s safe.

“For now, let’s inform them that Mika is safe. It would be a problem if a large-scale search party were to be launched.”

“In that case, I’ll head to the royal capital and explain. I can get there quickly.”

“Sorry to trouble you, but I’d appreciate it.”

After the three of us had breakfast together, Sheila prepared herself and left for the royal capital.

This left me alone with Mika.

But I had no idea what to say to a distressed young woman.

The fact that there’s about a twenty-year age gap between us doesn’t help.

I tried asking her a few questions, but all I got in return were half-hearted replies.

The awkward silence between us stretched on, and unable to endure it any longer, I decided to focus on work.

Mika probably needed some time alone, too.

With that reasoning in mind, I headed toward the fields.

“Mika, I’ll be working over in the fields right there. If you need anything, feel free to call me.”

“The fields…? Are you growing something?”

“Yes, I’m growing vegetables native to this world, like Crackdraff and Brownturn, as well as a small amount of tomatoes.”

“—To-tomatoes!? You mean those tomatoes?”

“Yes, the tomatoes you’re imagining.”

“I want to eat some! Please, let me have some!”

Her earlier gloom vanished in an instant.

Mika grabbed my shoulder firmly and pleaded with me.

“Of course, I don’t mind. Would you like to come with me?”

“Thank you, mister! Let’s go together!”

She beamed at me with a big, cheerful smile.

Her sudden visit had left me flustered, but seeing her like this reminded me just how comforting a taste of home can be. Japanese food really is the best way to lift someone’s spirits.
