Chapter 22: Explanation
The next morning, Velvet arrived in a carriage as promised.
I had already explained the situation to Sheila, and she agreed to help with the guidance.
“Sato, I look forward to working with you from today. And… the servant over there too.”
“Yes, thank you. But… please address Sheila by her name instead of calling her a servant.”
“I don’t mind how I’m addressed.”
Sheila interjected.
“No, that’s not acceptable. While working here, there are no ranks, for me or anyone else.”
“I’m fine with that. I didn’t mean anything by it; I just didn’t know her name. Sheila, I look forward to working with you.”
“Likewise. Thank you.”
With this, I hoped the work environment would be more comfortable, and I’d be happy if Velvet and Sheila could get along.
With those thoughts, I guided Velvet to the field.
“So this is the skill-generated field? … I don’t see much of a difference.”
“Neither do I, so I don’t think there’s any noticeable visual distinction. Now, Velvet, the tasks I’d like you to perform are threefold: First, planting the crop seedlings. Second, watering the planted crops. Third, harvesting the ripened crops. I’ll explain everything step by step, so feel free to ask any questions.”
“Understood. Then, I have my first question: What is that bouncy thing over there?”
Velvet pointed to Lime, my slime familiar, bouncing around in the distance.
“That’s my familiar, a slime. It’s completely harmless, so don’t worry. Would you like to try touching it?”
“Even I can touch it? But it’s a monster, right?”
“As I mentioned, it’s harmless.”
“Then… I guess I’ll give it a try.”
Before starting the farm work, we decided to greet Lime.
Though Lime couldn’t speak, Velvet was eager to interact with it.
“It’s… cold and squishy, just like it looks.”
“Monsters can be cute when they’re not hostile, don’t you think?”
“You’re right… It doesn’t feel slimy either. It’s kind of adorable.”
Velvet, growing bolder, not only touched Lime but began hugging it.
Her actions showed she had far more initiative than I’d expected from a princess.
“This is… delightful. Its texture is so nice that I’d love one as a body pillow.”
“I’m glad you’re comfortable with it, but let’s stop there. Lime might not appreciate being handled too much.”
“Aww, but I want to keep touching it!”
“No, let’s focus on the work.”
Reluctantly, Velvet let go of Lime, and we joined Sheila, who was already working diligently.
I began explaining each task to Velvet, but she picked things up much faster than expected.
Despite the simplicity of the tasks, her efficiency and quick mastery were remarkable.
For someone who likely had never done physical labor before, Velvet’s skill was surprising—proof of the inherent differences in ability between people.
But her help undeniably boosted productivity.
While I had to repay Sheila with Japanese cuisine and Velvet with manga, the increased NP (special currency) earnings made it worth it.
Still, I doubted Velvet could work regularly due to her position, so perhaps the best use of the earned NP would be to hire more monsters.
Three days passed quickly with Velvet working alongside us.
Surprisingly, not only was she highly capable, but she also seemed to genuinely enjoy herself, much like Sheila.
This brought me some relief, as I’d felt uneasy about asking a princess to do farm work in exchange for manga.
“Velvet, thank you for your hard work over the past three days.”
“Well, I only worked to earn my reward. But… it wasn’t as hard as I’d imagined. Actually, I had fun, so I’ll definitely come back. The food was delicious too.”
“I’m glad to hear that. Now, let me give you the manga you earned.”
I handed her the sixth volume of the shojo manga series I had prepared in advance.
Velvet, smiling brighter than I’d ever seen, hugged the manga tightly.
“Working for it makes it feel even more rewarding. Thank you, Sato.”
“I should be the one thanking you. Your help was greatly appreciated.”
“I’ll be back soon. I’m sure I’ll want the next volume too.”
“I’ll be waiting anytime.”
“Well then, I’ll take my leave now—”
With that, Velvet boarded her carriage and departed.
While I’d initially been anxious about having a princess work on the farm, she turned out to be a great asset.
Of course, it would be ideal if she could come weekly, but as a princess, her schedule was undoubtedly packed.
I decided to simply increase the workload when she could help.
“…Sato-san, you really are amazing.”
“Eh? Me? Not at all. Why do you say that all of a sudden?”
“I’ve never seen the princess look so happy. As I mentioned before, she’s known to be difficult. Even though she’s popular at the castle, I never imagined she’d end up working alongside us in the fields…”
“It’s all thanks to the books from another world. The same goes for you, Sheila—your work here is thanks to the ingredients from another world.”
It’s not me who’s remarkable—it’s Earth’s technology and culture.
Sheila’s compliment was kind, but I knew I couldn’t let it go to my head.
“…Even without the otherworldly cuisine, I would still—”
“Hm? Sorry, I didn’t catch the last part. What did you say?”
“N-nothing! I’ll head back first!”
Sheila mumbled something, her face slightly red, before retreating to the villa.
I couldn’t quite make out her words, and since she had already left, I decided not to dwell on it.
I’d finish tidying up and then head back myself.
