Chapter 187: The Monsters’ Request
I managed to give Milagros-san a proper welcome, and she left looking very satisfied as she departed with Yato-san.
Wishing that she’ll visit again someday, I returned to my usual daily routine.
Since we’d had quite a few events in a row, I spent the following month focusing mainly on farming.
Aside from a few minor incidents, the season had shifted into early summer.
“Phew… Satou-san, it’s getting warmer lately.”
“Yeah. It might be time to switch over to summer crops soon.”
Not only does the temperature mark the changing of the seasons, but you can also feel it through the crops you grow.
Summer vegetables always make me think of curry—maybe this year I’ll make a summer vegetable curry once they’re ready.
“So we’ll be growing summer crops! I can’t wait to taste them.”
“Look forward to it. The Dragonkin fields are fully set up now, so we’ll have plenty of harvest this year.”
“The Dragonkin moving here really has been a blessing for the village.”
“Definitely. They’re an invaluable and powerful addition.”
As we chatted and worked on the harvest, Mash and Moji approached me.
They seemed to be trying to tell me something—but I had no idea what.
Except for Helena, my tamed monsters can’t speak human language.
They understand what I say, but I still can’t really understand them.
“Hmm… what do you think they’re trying to say?”
“Could it be about evolution? Moji and Mash haven’t evolved yet.”
Ah, that could be it. Maybe they’re bringing up the issue of evolution.
Most of the other monsters have been evolving fairly smoothly, but Moji hasn’t evolved even once, and Mash hasn’t for a long while now.
I distribute the magic stones evenly among everyone, but I guess evolution depends on the species and the individual.
After all, Lime has already evolved several times.
“I thought so too, but look—they’re shaking their heads like it’s not that.”
“Haha, that’s pretty cute.”
Just as Sheila said, Moji and Mash’s awkwardly cute expressions really stood out.
I was thinking the same thing—until they started bumping their heads against Sheila’s leg in protest, so I decided not to say it out loud.
“So if it’s not about evolution… maybe they just want a break?”
The moment I said that, both Moji and Mash began jumping for joy as if shouting Bingo!
Their reaction was so cute that I couldn’t help but laugh.
“If you want a break, you can have one anytime. Is there somewhere you’d like to go?”
When I asked that, the two of them gestured together toward some direction, apparently showing where they wanted to go.
I still had no clue what they meant, but it was adorable.
“Hm… I’m not sure where that is. Do you think they can go without me?”
“…It doesn’t look like it. Maybe it’s far away?”
Judging by their reaction, it wasn’t nearby.
I had no idea where they wanted to go, but since they’ve been working hard, I wanted to take them there.
“All right. I’ll drive the wagon, so let’s go together. You two can guide us as we go.”
“I agree, that sounds best. Leave the village work to me.”
“Thanks, Sheila. I appreciate it.”
So, it was decided—we’d take Moji and Mash on a little trip.
I didn’t know the destination, but it probably wasn’t anywhere dangerous.
Still, maybe I should bring an escort, just in case.
The next morning, I invited Lua-san to come along as our guard.
Ideally, Sheila would’ve been the best choice, but with Moji, Mash, and me all gone, it would’ve been tough if she left too.
That’s why I asked Lua-san, who was strong and reliable.
“Thanks for agreeing to be our escort this time.”
“Don’t mention it. You’ve done a lot for me, Sato, so this is the least I can do. Though… traveling with just the two of us feels a bit tense. We haven’t talked much before.”
“That’s true. We’ve met often, but I guess this is the first time it’s just the two of us, aside from Moji and Mash.”
“Yeah. Sheila, Portia, and Royce were always around.”
“So it really is our first time alone. I’m actually looking forward to it—it’s a good chance to talk.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I’ve wanted to learn more about you too. I’m nervous, but also kind of excited.”
We shared a few laughs like that, then set off on our journey.
We knew roughly the direction we needed to go—east.
The exact destination was still a mystery, so I decided to enjoy the surprise when we got there.
Both Moj and Mash seemed to have the same destination in mind, so it was probably a place connected to monsters somehow.
Feeling curious and a little excited, I flicked the reins and drove the wagon forward.
